I'm looking for restaurant recommendations for central Edinburgh for a special birthday. Not Michelin starred - just good quality, affordable and maybe a little different. Thank you.

Some of these might be pricier than you're wanting.....
Tattu
Gardeners Cottage
Six by Nico
New Chapter
Wedgewood
Angels with Bagpipes
The Little Chartroom
The Outsider
Educated Flea
Aizle

Good list above (although I don’t love 6 by Nico or tattu food wise - they are more about the experience/pictures) I’d add…

  • cafe st honore
  • the grainstore
  • the spence
  • DiVino
  • ka pao
  • montieths

Is Wildfire still open? Had some lovely meals there.

emmathedilemma · 13/12/2022 10:03

@Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday ah i thought the food was lovely at the Grainstore but I was still hungry and had to have toast for supper when i got home! half a potato and 2 green beans does not fill a girl up!

VinoDino · 13/12/2022 10:05

Noto

FuckabethFuckor · 13/12/2022 10:06

Second The Outsider. It’s quite bistro and not fancy but the food is great.

L’Escargot Bleu always good, as is La Sal (just down from top of Broughton Street near the new tram stop).

The Rabbit Hole is decent if you fancy a trip to Marchmont.

emmathedilemma · 13/12/2022 10:17

Ask for a table with a castle view if you go to The Outsider!

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 13/12/2022 10:18

That’s a shame @emmathedilemma I’ve never found it to be like that at all - admittedly always have the bread and at least 2 courses which may help. Hope it’s not changed!

emmathedilemma · 13/12/2022 10:20

I had 3 courses @Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday but the main was literally a bit of venison and some decorative veg.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 13/12/2022 10:21

Was it recent? I haven’t been in last year so will be gutted if it’s gone downhill, it’s one of my favourites

emmathedilemma · 13/12/2022 10:35

no it was a few years ago

TrixJax · 13/12/2022 15:22

Any of the Howies restaurants.
Wedgewoods
Angels with bagpipes
Another vote for the Outsider

Chemenger · 13/12/2022 15:26

The Rabbit Hole is excellent. Cafe St Honore is always a good choice. The one on top of Carlton Hill - The Lookout, looks amazing but I haven’t been.

Notplayingball · 13/12/2022 18:31

Kismot.

MyView2 · 13/12/2022 18:33

Black Ivy
Howies
The Witchery

lennylion · 13/12/2022 18:34

The Witchery is fantastic

misssunshine4040 · 13/12/2022 18:38

Kyloe for steak

17CherryTreeLane · 13/12/2022 18:39

All great suggestions above. Rollo is another option, really lovely food and atmosphere.

OhPeggySue · 13/12/2022 18:42

Fishers.

RedHouseWins · 13/12/2022 18:44

Leftfield on Bruntsfield Links is very small but lovely and just got a great review from Jay Rayner.

A bit more expensive but extra lovely is Fhiorre on Broughton Street.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 13/12/2022 21:09

Lots of good suggestions on here. Some of my favourites include Fhior (pricey though) and Noto. Rollo is nice, as is New Chapter.

EBoo80 · 14/12/2022 12:02

Want to throw in a recommendation for The Walnut - amazing place on Leith Walk and so well priced. Personally I’d avoid a lot of the chains listed above - especially in Christmas party season.
