Edinburgh roads in the snow last night - no gritters?

i was in Edinburgh yesterday evening in the heavy snow, and couldn’t believe how bad the roads got. They didn’t seem to have been gritted at all.

Going from the Fort towards town cars were skidding on the ice, and then from Morningside towards Fairmilehead there were abandoned cars in the middle of the road.everywhere.

It was bad out as far as Penicuik, but then as soon as I got into the Borders it changed and you could tell the gritters had been out and the roads were clear. I didn’t see a single gritter in Edinburgh.

Does anyone know if there is any reason? I’ve never seen it that bad before.

You can always check where the gritters are at on the tracker, just google Scottish gritter tracker and you will find it.

Do you think gritting a road stops snow settling on it and turning to ice?

It doesn’t.

If the temperature is -4 or below, gritting does nothing. Councils have to make sure they make best use of their resources. Pointless to grit when the weather forecast shows it will be a waste of time.

Sometimes they grit then it rains and rain turns to snow. The grit will have been washed away.

@Witsendwilly No, I think the roads were the worst I have ever seen them, and yet I didn’t see a single gritter.

@Merrilydancing that’s interesting. I’ll take a look. Thanks.

The gritters had been but earlier in the day. I’m out in Penicuik and nipped along to Tesco about 6 in the evening. The drive along was fine, when I came out and headed home half an hour later it was mayhem…the snow was falling thick and fast and driving conditions were terrifying.

There’s nothing they can do about fresh snow and falling temperatures.

They had the little mini gritters out doing the pavements.
Edinburgh council is must more interest in "active travellers", they hate motorists!
