Nicola Sturgeon announces controversial not proven verdict will finally be scrapped

Finally, tonight I will raise a large glass to this news.
It should have been scrapped years ago.

I never really thought about this until our family experienced it and it helped in our case. My niece got a Not Proven verdict when she was the victim of repeated sexual abuse in her home as a young teen. The alternative likely outcome of Not Guilty would have been much harder for her to face, she felt from the verdict that she had been believed but there was just not enough physical evidence. The aftermath of the case was difficult, she needed counselling and there were suicide concerns for a while. Throughout the time she held onto the fact the court and jurors did not find him Not Guilty.

Thankfully more evidence came to light a couple of years later, she got some justice, and he did serve time.

It will lead to more not guilty verdicts

Yeah I am sad to see this go.

In a perfect world guilty would be enough but all too often the evidence gets fumbled on the way to court and victims are left with nothing. Not proven has helped give clarity for victims when the incredibly long drawn out and underfunded court process and accompanying red tape just isn't doing its job.

TQIDLLTK totally agree with this!
