Where to move to in Scotland as a singleton about to be 50!

I have long held dreams of escaping my current life and circumstances and want to make some proper plans now as I can't go on. I love Scotland and would dearly love to move there. I will know no-one!!!

My job is transferable and there is much demand for it across Scotland as it is a shit (but well paid) job and recruitment and retention issues across England and Scotland, so not worried about this side of it and have registered with agency who have jobs all over Scotland.

I love to be by the sea, and would like to be somewhere where I might have a chance of at least a little social life, perhaps some clubs to join.... even though I am really an introvert.

Any ideas on areas to look at?

Fife / East Neuk / Around St Andrews or on the Tay coast near Dundee (Tayport, Newport, Wormit).

Wbeezer · 26/08/2022 19:21

I'd second what @Cismyfatarse says.

Goldunicorn · 26/08/2022 19:26

I love the Fife / Dundee area too although live nearer Aberdeen and would happily recommend it. if you wanted a mix of quiet & social life, and could work more remotely, I'd move to Braemar or Ballater - not by the sea but beautiful mountainous scenery.

ShadowoftheFall · 26/08/2022 19:28

I came on to suggest Fife/east neuk, or possibly Broughty Ferry near Dundee.

stargirl1701 · 26/08/2022 19:29

I would say East Neuk too.

Menopants · 26/08/2022 19:31

What is your budget?

AyBeeCee · 26/08/2022 19:32

I'll 3rd Fife.
Also East Lothian, Ayrshire, Moray coast, Inverness area, Black Isle.

In general the east coast of Scotland is drier but bit cooler. West coast milder but wetter and more likely to encounter midges.

In the highlands the days are very long in summer but quite short in winter, dark by 4pm

WalkingSeason · 26/08/2022 19:33

I would hopefully rent first, but then have a budget of max about 400k with mortgage, but would prefer not to go this high. Seeing as just me I don't need much space, lovely views would be nice, and quiet!

Ah, I’d say South Queensferry or Largs-ish - close enough to cities for the socialising but next to the sea for peace.

LizzieMacQueen · 26/08/2022 19:39

I thought Portobello was an okay area now too. Close to Edinburgh of course.

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/08/2022 19:40

Edinburgh - fabulous city and by the sea

averythinline · 26/08/2022 19:41

Cromarty is one of my happy places but only been on holiday so not too sure of the range of lifestyle but rosemarkie bit bigger and Inverness not too far and a city.... Dhwould be there in a shot but i worry about the winter short days....although there does seem to be a microclimate as we watch the temperatures!

trulyconfuseddotcom · 26/08/2022 20:01

North Berwick is nice. Quick to Edinburgh on the train too.

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/08/2022 20:05

Fife
South Queensferry
North Berwick

All near or on the sea.

Near to Edinburgh for nightlife and culture

You will get more for your money in Fife but £400K is a good budget unless you want central Edinburgh

Dundee is great too.

Arrowsparrow · 27/08/2022 06:25

Dundee

I went to uni in Dundee years ago and dream of moving back there. It's a small city so there's everything you could possibly need right on your doorstep. It's also the sunniest city in Scotland

If you're looking for something a bit quieter I'd also say the East Neuk of Fife.

Cismyfatarse · 27/08/2022 07:39

Hence Tay Cosst. Dundee is fabulous and only 3-4 miles away. Although property is a bit cheaper in Dundee.

WalkingSeason · 27/08/2022 07:44

Thank you, lots of ideas focused on one wider area now I just need to get to Scotland and look around

Fife. Your budget is huge for a house for a single person in Scotland!

Avoid small and ex mining towns though. Some places arent welcoming to outsiders and everyone's granny went to school together.

Troon

Or if you want to go further north, Inverness.

Indoctro · 27/08/2022 08:27

maddy68 · 27/08/2022 08:35

emmathedilemma · 27/08/2022 18:36

Another vote for portobello in Edinburgh.

WalkingSeason · 27/08/2022 21:01
