Where to move to in Scotland as a singleton about to be 50!

I have long held dreams of escaping my current life and circumstances and want to make some proper plans now as I can't go on. I love Scotland and would dearly love to move there. I will know no-one!!!

My job is transferable and there is much demand for it across Scotland as it is a shit (but well paid) job and recruitment and retention issues across England and Scotland, so not worried about this side of it and have registered with agency who have jobs all over Scotland.

I love to be by the sea, and would like to be somewhere where I might have a chance of at least a little social life, perhaps some clubs to join.... even though I am really an introvert.

Any ideas on areas to look at?

I really like Aberdeenshire/Aberdeen. Lots happening and it sparkles.

Redqueenheart · 28/08/2022 14:25

I could have posted almost the same thread: also early 50s and just got a fully remote job so thinking of moving to Scotland in the next few months.

Maybe we should start a club! :)

Watching this thread with interest.

I’d suggest Edinburgh and the surrounding areas - loads going on and easy to integrate. Beaches and countryside on your doorstep. Portobello, south queensferry, Dunbar and North Berwick also nice

Redqueenheart · 29/08/2022 09:24

@WalkingSeason

I am going to Scotland on Saturday for a week :)

but yes it makes it more difficult when based in England to view homes so for now I am doing a lot of research to at least narrow down a list of potential locations.

WalkingSeason · 10/09/2022 13:43

How did your trip go @Redqueenheart

Redqueenheart · 12/09/2022 13:46

Hi @WalkingSeason, my trip went well and I had some really nice weather too.

I really loved being in the countryside (I started my trip in Edinburgh but then went to do some horse riding and was based in between Glasgow and Edinburgh).

I wanted to see how it would be to live in a much more rural location after living in London and the South East for so long.

I really loved it and the people are amazing there so that definitely helped me made the final decision to move to Scotland and I have narrowed down my search to a few locations.

Dunbar looked great and North Berwick. I am also looking at places like Dalguety Bay Troon.

Redqueenheart · 12/09/2022 13:47

Helensburgh and South Queensferry.

I think the Borders are a bit too isolated for me and like you I really want to live near the sea.

Good luck with your own search!!

Fife is very central and you'll get a lot for your monkey there. I've been working I. Leven a lot and i did t realise how gorgeous it was such a lovely beach

Please don’t bring your monkey OP
I know Scottish money is often distrusted in England but we haven’t yet started stooped to bartering primates 🙊 😂

Furandfeathers I don't know what you are talking about? What does your comment mean!

sleepismyhobby · 12/09/2022 17:05

😂 oh I see my weird typos . My god I really need glasses 😂

Portobello

megosaurusrex · 12/09/2022 17:08

I would LOVE to live in Edinburgh. An amazing, vibrant city with so much to do

Pinkbonbon · 12/09/2022 17:11

Just a side thought - if you are looking for a relationship (as opposed to just some fun)thrn you may have more luck in towns than in cities. I've always found that ppl in cities are often looking for the bigger better, the next thing.

Sounds like a good trip. Sadly my situation remains complicated and currently it is all just a dream.... but one I am trying to action. In the meantime planning short breaks up there. Going to stay in and travel a bit around Fife next :)

@WalkingSeason I'm in Moray, half way between Aberdeen and Inverness. The house opposite is coming on the market soon - 100m from the sea in a lovely friendly community 😀

Any links on the house for sale yet please? Grin

Sorry not yet. They've had the home report etc done but apparently they're waiting for the roadworks outside to be finished in case it puts prospective buyers off.

I wish they'd hurry up as they're bloody awful neighbours who have fallen out with everybody here (hence the move!)

I would say Perthshire, so many beautiful towns

Rainbowshit · 21/12/2023 10:17

If you have a well paid job make sure you take into account the new Scottish tax hike.

Another vote for portobello in Edinburgh.

Me too. It would be ideal. I wouldn't really recommend Fife for a person newly moving and living on their own. In Edinburgh there will be lots of things to do and clubs to join.
