Where to move to in Scotland as a singleton about to be 50!

I have long held dreams of escaping my current life and circumstances and want to make some proper plans now as I can't go on. I love Scotland and would dearly love to move there. I will know no-one!!!

My job is transferable and there is much demand for it across Scotland as it is a shit (but well paid) job and recruitment and retention issues across England and Scotland, so not worried about this side of it and have registered with agency who have jobs all over Scotland.

I love to be by the sea, and would like to be somewhere where I might have a chance of at least a little social life, perhaps some clubs to join.... even though I am really an introvert.

Any ideas on areas to look at?

Before you decide, come back on and give us your shortlist. Scotland can be a funny place, some areas welcome newcomers and others, will never make you welcome especially if you are from a certain country beginning with E. My family are incomers and despite being 4 generations in now I still don't feel integrated. Towns with a population as large as 6K are probably just about all related to each other via great great great granny Isobel.

Helensburgh, North Berwick, St Andrews, Oban. Does depend how much you want beach versus sea, whether you want to be an easy journey to a major city, what kind of property you want, etc.

If you want to have social options one suggestion as well would be to try to join some facebook groups for local areas to give you a feel for what is going on.

Not Oban - it's a cultural wasteland.

Comrie and Creiff are beautiful but more central than coastal. Bridge of Allan and Dunblane are both lovely with a 'ladies who lunch' vibe and an arts centre nearby. loads of lovely villages in the area with more of an Archers feel as in 'big houses' and landed estates, farms and small villages (Kippen, Buchlyvie, Balfron) or Drymen if you want to be close to Loch Lomond. All within an hour of Glasgow.

Ayrshire has amazing beaches and is exceptionally good value, some good towns nearby, 50 mins from Glasgow City centre. West end of Glasgow is beautiful, loads and loads of culture, restaurants, independent retailers, property more expensive but worth it, 40 mins to Loch Lomond, coast and other lochs too.

She hasn't really. She just responded to someone else who resurrected it as a zombie thread

Yesididntdothat · 23/12/2023 20:36

It was the Op who resurrected though!

@WalkingSeason What do you do for work? Sounds flexible - I'm looking for a career change! Smile

Wherever you chose, come on in. The country's your lobster!

West Kilbride, Fairley, South Queensferry, one of the accessible islands like Bute or Arran?

Dunbar has a fab community and close to Edinburgh. Loads of groups. Also somewhere like Newport on Tay which is close to Dundee. Or the Black Isle further north?
