Hello all

looking for some advice on the best place to live in scotland. Coming up from England with two young kids 3 and 5. East or west coast. Like sports and community feel. Thanks

West Coast is warmer but wetter (and more midges)
East Coast is cooler but drier and less/no midges

It depends on what sports, where your working do you need to commute etc Scotland is very big!

Plump for the middle. Stirling. It's got a lot to offer. Small city but access to both Edin and Glas plus beautiful countryside. Downside is proximity to beaches.

Also budget as some areas are a lot more expensive then others! So Aberdeenshire is more expensive typically (unless Peterhead and Fraserburgh which I wouldn't recommend) then Angus or Dundee area on the East Coast

Moray coast is lovely. Nairn , Forres, Elgin , Lossiemouth, Cullen, Buckie and all the places along the way are lovely

Dundee - loads going on culture-wise, easy journey to Edinburgh and gorgeous Fife coast. Small enough to have a nice community fee.

Depends on your budget. Broughty Ferry is lovely (5 miles out of Dundee), but houses are on the more expensive side. Has lovely views, nice beach , good schools.

Broughty Ferry is on DH and my short list of where we'd like to retire to!

Really depends on budget. Some areas of Scotland are pretty expensive

Budget and, describe the ways you're expecting your life to improve?

Dunbar or North Berwick would fit the bill!

We live very rurally on an island! Recently went to Stirling, I’d recommmend it, lots for children to do and central and in lovely countryside and the castle and monument are spectacular!

  • and maybe why you're moving / why Scotland / whether transport links to England will be important. Scotland is huge. It's impossible to comment with any real meaning on where you should live without any detail.

I live in St Andrews on the east coast and I think it is perfect but it is not a cheap place to buy a house.

Notthisnotthat · 19/06/2022 19:45

Another vote for the east coast of Scotland, but I love the dramatic scenery of the west coast and have enjoyed lots of holidays in the area.

You must have a vague idea - it’s an entire country. It’s like asking “which part of America should I move to if I like community?” - there are so many variables. Do yourself a favour and narrow it down a bit.
