Autism Schools

I'm looking for recommendations please for primary and secondary schools that cater for autism, not the usual inclusion policy cater where they really don't have the resources, I mean properly cater for additional needs. My child won't cope in mainstream but a unit attached is a possibility.

The primary school in in the Glasgow local authority so recommendations for schools in Glasgow would be good but I would consider a move for a very good school outside Glasgow.

Are you thinking of a private school? If not, it would be a question of applying for an alternative pathway through the education authority. In Glasgow you don’t apply for a particular provision but everyone states what support your child needs and the education department makes the decision about where they will be placed. It is usually the closest school which will meet their needs, but not always. There is NO guarantee your child will get a place in an alternate provision and the default position is ALWAYS that they will go to their local mainstream school. You and the school/nursery need to make the case for why this would not be suitable. I don’t know about other authorities but I would imagine they would be similar as inclusion is high on the Scottish Government’s agenda.
My advice would be to talk to the head of your child’s nursery or school.

My child has a diagnosis and is attending a unit, it's been advised by education that mainstream secondary school won't be appropriate. I'm looking really for others experiences of schools as we're thinking of a house move and being near or an appropriate travel distance is important so that will shape the decision on location. I do understand how the system works in Glasgow at least, and despite transport being provided, it's also let us down and I've done a power or travel to get to school so would like to make sure any potential schools aren't too far away.
