Advanced Higher Maths today

Did anyone else's child struggle with Advanced Higher Maths today? My daughter says there were lots of questions on it that she couldn't answer. Her classmates all said the same. She usually does really well in maths and has got A's all year for her class tests. Just wondering if it's just us or if other people found the same.

My son took it also today. He said paper one was straightforward but paper two was pretty tricky. He got stuck on two questions in paper two. Maths is his best subject by far, though.

Same here, and normally very strong in maths!

DS said it was harder than any past paper he’s done (and he’s done loads in class/mocks/revision). He said first paper was fine but there was a high mark question in the 2nd paper that was unlike any question he’s seen before. He thinks he might have got a few marks for workings but didn’t complete it. Even his friend who usually gets 95-100% in most tests/mocks said it was tough. He’s glad he’s got an unconditional offer put it that way 😊

Thank you all for posting. What happens if the majority of pupils can't answer a particular question? Do the examiners adjust the results accordingly?

All the SQA exams are marked on the curve, meaning the want approximately the same percentage of A B and C grades each year. There was one year when the C grade for higher maths was 35% and the other boundaries were lowered accordingly.

Yes, my DD said the second paper was “horrendous” and she loves maths and has been getting great marks all year in the subject! All her peers felt the same. She really struggled with the last question and having done all the past papers twice, says she’s never seen a question like that before.

Son agreed and he is usually ok with maths. I do think that any particularly funky questions end up eliminated.
