Advanced Highers North Lanarkshire

Does anyone know if any of the North Lanarkshire schools are offering both Advanced Higher maths and physics in-house? DD wants to do both and her school doesn’t offer physics. They have said she may be able to travel to another school but are not sure due to covid. I just want to know my options for a school that does both before I contact her school after Easter (mainly because the DHT who is dealing with the options forms is hopeless and won’t have done anything about finding out). Also, which schools are offering AH physics this year?

We had this palaver for dd doing advanced higher english during covid. She had to do it all online whereas normally she would have attended the other school. Our school offers very little in the way of advanced highers which is crap

Awayyego · 15/04/2022 08:31

It’s rubbish, isn’t it. All the high schools in the area are small so they do a very limited selection of advanced highers, and it seems to be what fits the timetable rather than what the pupils actually want. DD is on track for a high A in English but her report said she had reached her potential (as did everyone else’s in the school) presumably to discourage them from asking for Advanced Higher.

I used to have to bring dd home from school to do the AH English as the signal in the school was terrible and the laptops took forever to load up. She did it on the computer at home. Not sure what's happening this year as my ds is only in 4th year so we have a couple of years to go until he is at that stage.

Hi, my children did AH Maths and Physics in Our Lady's Cumbernauld, although the youngest left 3 years ago now. They were so well supported by all of the staff there.

My opinion and experience is that AH provision in some schools is depressing… pupils not able to do them at school so attend ‘hubs’ , online etc Its a shame that there isn’t better provision- not individual schools fault - a sign of the times though unfortunately :(

You're maybe not keen on the idea of a hub but Glasgow Caledonian Uni Advanced Higher hub might be worth looking into if you can't find what you're looking for in your LA.
Seems to also help with transition to HE as gives S6 pupils the opportunity to sample student life prior to leaving school. I suppose it would depend on how it fitted with any school based subjects, but if planning a few Adv Highers might be worth looking into.

Awayyego · 16/04/2022 07:19

Thanks for the information. Cumbernauld is about as far away from us as it gets but I would consider it. I loved the idea of the Glasgow Caledonian hub as an intermediate step to university but sadly it’s only available to pupils in Glasgow - I phoned and asked.

I'm sure St Ambrose in Coatbridge would offer them.
Maybe too far away but Uddingston Grammar Uddingston does

Awayyego · 16/04/2022 07:40

That’s useful to know easterbunny. Coatbridge would be closer but uddingston could be on my way to work. At least that’s a couple of schools to start phoning if I need to.

Our school only offers 6 Nat 5s which used to annoy me when many schools offer eight. However the rationale is that this enables them to offer more advanced highers, of which they now offer 15 subjects. How many advanced highers does your school offer?

If there is no coursework next year as part of the exam, remote learning should be easier to do?

Uddingston is S Lanarkshire if that makes a difference?

Is it worth calling the schools in the same area to ask if you plan to just travel for one AH? Pupils did that for Highers when I was in S5. You don't say where you are but I'm thinking Dalziel for example.

Or have I misunderstood and you are planning fully moving DC school?

Awayyego · 16/04/2022 08:26

I’m looking at all the options at the moment. The issue is that pupils have not been able to move between schools for the last couple of years due to covid. It’s been remote learning which doesn’t really lend itself to physics. That may change as restrictions are easing but nobody can tell me and I don’t want to leave it to chance.
I would move schools if that is the best option and DD isn’t that bothered about moving for 6th year as most of her friends are current 6th years.
I just want to be armed with the facts as NLC are generally a bit apathetic.

It’s not Dalziel but it’s a much smaller school in that general area. Dalziel has not traditionally offered AH physics. I haven’t checked for next year yet.

Don’t want to say which school as I’ve been a bit insulting about the DHT

Ah I see. I didn't appreciate that about covid and travel but makes sense.

Yea I can see why you want to be armed. In that case I would do what you're doing and be contacting or looking online at the schools you are interested in.

I would have thought AH Physics would be offered in a number of schools (a lot of the numerical and computing courses suggest it) so hopefully you can find a few options.

Ah that surprises me a bit! I was sure they would have done. It has a great rep. Interesting!!

I'm SL do I only know the bare minimum over the border Grin
