Scotsnet exams thread 2022

I haven't seen a thread for this years exams yet so thought I'd get the ball rolling (hopefully not too early!). Who has dc sitting exams this year and how are they getting on with their prelims so far?

ds(17) is in S6, he is sitting

Maths AH
Physics AH
Geography H (crash)
PE H (sat 2 years ago at NAT5)

They had their prelims in December which was good as they could relax over Christmas. He has had results back for 3 - will start with the good - Physics AH 70% 😀, then the no so good - Maths AH 45%, PE H 42% 😮.

He is very pleased with Physics, as he didn't expect it. The others he expected but seeing it has still been a shock. Hopefully in a good way and he will get his finger out as he hasn't been applying himself this year due recent first car freedom 🚗 + first girlfriend since he was 14 👫 + out together in said car 💏 + finally started his teenage rebelling phase 🙄.

Did anyone find it was similar in S6 with their teens? I think he is just scunnered this year with school and going through the whole studying and exam process for a 3rd year running. Many of his friends seem to feel the same this year.

Wouldn't grade boundaries still have differentiated between students as normal without casting doubt on the quality of this cohorts grades by saying they marked more generously? We would be able to see in normal years a maths A grade boundary fluctuates depending on the paper that year. Maybe in practice it is the essentially same thing 🤷‍♀️

I am not concerned about ds this year, he is in S6, already has the grades he needed in hand from S5. He knows he has taken the foot right off the gas this year and is not going to have the results he is capable of (good lesson before uni!)

But last year he worked really hard for and deserved his Higher results, yet he didn't feel the satisfaction he should have, all it took was one of two people to cast doubt with talk of devalued grades and easier exams/assessments. It is a shame to think there will be kids feeling the same way again this year.

Hello, I have a just done s4 waiting for N5 results too. I saw that article earlier too, I’ll be interested to see what the grade boundaries are. I feel more nervous now waiting for my son’s results than I did for mine!

2 more sleeps good luck everyone

I think we signed up to the wrong thing for text and email notification 😯

Literature said “MySQA” and he had the “My SQA” apps for exams and study timetable, so I assumed that was it. But on checking, there is nothing in those that has phone number or email address.

Looks like it was something separate through the website, now closed, also called “My SQA”.

Anxiety building here. Dd just finished S5 and had a terrible year with friendship issues at school. Her prelims didn't go well and although she's now at a new school for S6 and very happy I know she wasn't at her full potential when taking the exams in May. Just have to hope for the best and prepare for the worst 🤞🏼

WeAllHaveWings · 08/08/2022 18:14

@LovinglifeAF the first year is the worst! but, highers are even worse and this time next year you will be wondering why you were worried last year 🤣

@user143677433 he will need to wait and do the traditional opening of the envelope. The text doesn't quite have the same ceremony as waiting for and opening that big white envelope! Have they thought how he wants to do it? In private so they get time to absorb or all together? I have seen some kids do it in their room and video themselves opening the envelope (can delete later if results not as expected!)

@dancemom It is so frustrating when things outside their control impact their potential and results. Hopefully, she gets what she is hoping for or is able to recover in S6 at her new school to take her to what she plans for after school🤞

ds is getting nervous now too, he knows his S6 results won't be great due to the utter lack of effort put in, but it is just hitting him, that even though he doesn't need the results now, how they will look on his record and what he will need to tell family/friends tomorrow who ask how he did. He is hoping for AH - BC, H - BB, but is expecting AH - CD, H - BC (or worse!). I am mostly all prepared for my completely lacking in sympathy talk and to tell him he got what he deserved, not what he is capable of and I hope he has learnt a lesson before uni.

I’m feeling a bit sick for tomorrow, ds has his uni place but worked so hard for his 3 AH anyway and I know how disappointed he’ll be and how he’ll feel about exams if these first ones didn’t go well

In ds's school, last years "assessments" were sat in exam conditions so there was no real difference to his experience this year except they knew the results earlier. I keep forgetting these are really the first official school "exams" the S6s will be sitting and don't think the difference has crossed ds's mind.

Yes I feel for s5 and s6 having to have gone into exams with no experience. Haha I keep trying to tell myself it’s “only” N5, not to minimise it for my son and the other kids, but if I am stressed out my box this year what will I be like next year 🤣

Good luck 🍀 everyone

neveradullmoment99 · 08/08/2022 21:30

DD also waiting for Nat 5 results tomorrow. I'm more nervous than her! No idea how she will open her letter. Probably in bed ha ha...
She always sleeps in. She probably will tomorrow and I will have to wait for her to open them! Eek!
Goodluck for those that are waiting!

RollerPolarBear · 09/08/2022 00:10

Will the letters arrive tomorrow or are they just posted? DC didn’t realise there was an option to sign up for texts until a couple of weeks ago and said there was no option if signing up when had realised.

dancemom · 09/08/2022 00:12

Certificates were with Royal Mail by 11pm Monday so should be delivered Tuesday

LovinglifeAF · 09/08/2022 00:13

SQA website says they will be delivered Tuesday

WeAllHaveWings · 09/08/2022 00:38

Last two years they arrived on results day here, think they are pretty reliable.

Thank you

Bluepeach · 09/08/2022 02:48

Morning, does anyone know why the grades are banded but the bands are not shared on the certificates? Just seems like an odd system to me and wondered what the rationale is. I did look online but couldn't find an answer.

sassanach · 09/08/2022 07:09

Hi everyone, yearly post from a careers adviser here (waves). Wishing all your kids good luck (it'll be my DC's nat 5s next year!). Happy to help with any questions. You can also phone the exam results helpline!

Aurea · 09/08/2022 07:15

Thanks Sassenach

I’m not joking when I say that my DS (who is waiting for higher results from S5) is so laid back that he had forgotten about results day last night when I reminded him. He’s a high achiever (normally) so I hope he is not going to be disappointed as he is so apathetic.

Awayyego · 09/08/2022 07:15

Less than an hour to go before the texts are due to arrive. I don’t know about my DDs but I’ve hardly slept! I’ve one who’s due her Nat5 results and one due her S5 Higher results.

sassanach · 09/08/2022 08:25

if anyone is phoning the exam results helpline, be kind to the careers adviser on the other end. We've already had some angry parents thinking we are the ones who assign the grade when actually we advise on next steps. We aren't the SQA!

PrincessRamone · 09/08/2022 08:29

Good luck everyone.

(And thanks @sassanach . That’s a great service. I hope most are appreciative and it’s just a few bad eggs that are causing problems).

We are waiting for the envelope here. And no idea what to expect. The school didn’t share expected grades so we only have our own estimates to go off. Fingers crossed!

Aurea · 09/08/2022 08:34

Maybe being apathetic and laid back works.🧐 All A grades in his highers plus advanced higher maths in S5.

Hope everyone is happy with the results this year. It's been a real rollercoaster......

LovinglifeAF · 09/08/2022 08:51

7 As at N5 here. So proud
