Scotsnet exams thread 2022

I haven't seen a thread for this years exams yet so thought I'd get the ball rolling (hopefully not too early!). Who has dc sitting exams this year and how are they getting on with their prelims so far?

ds(17) is in S6, he is sitting

Maths AH
Physics AH
Geography H (crash)
PE H (sat 2 years ago at NAT5)

They had their prelims in December which was good as they could relax over Christmas. He has had results back for 3 - will start with the good - Physics AH 70% 😀, then the no so good - Maths AH 45%, PE H 42% 😮.

He is very pleased with Physics, as he didn't expect it. The others he expected but seeing it has still been a shock. Hopefully in a good way and he will get his finger out as he hasn't been applying himself this year due recent first car freedom 🚗 + first girlfriend since he was 14 👫 + out together in said car 💏 + finally started his teenage rebelling phase 🙄.

Did anyone find it was similar in S6 with their teens? I think he is just scunnered this year with school and going through the whole studying and exam process for a 3rd year running. Many of his friends seem to feel the same this year.

My son told me that he did the English Higher today twice! He said he finished it and still had an hour, so answered all the questions again with different answers on the spare paper. Not sure what to make of that!

PoloMintPatty · 12/05/2022 08:12

Nat 5 English today. This is the halfway point here Grin

WeAllHaveWings · 12/05/2022 19:07

One more for ds tomorrow, AH Physics, then he is done with school exams forever! 🎉

Same! Half way point and the ones left are his easier ones. The end is in sight.

Aurea · 13/05/2022 13:56

Well that's my DS done with all his exams and S5.

He seems happy with his performance in all his exams. 😊

He's a glutton for punishment and has his driving theory test booked next week which he hasn't even started preparing for.

WeAllHaveWings · 13/05/2022 14:55

All done here too! He thinks AH Physics went well. He looks visibly relieved it is all over. 🙂

My DS sat AH physics today too, said it was tough but thinks he did ok. Still computing science to go though

Threeboysandadog · 14/05/2022 00:14

Ds now has 13 days holidays study leave before his N5 Gaelic and that’s his lot. …..and then it’s the long Wait!

WeAllHaveWings · 14/05/2022 13:33

First day after his last exam, it's 1:30pm and he has just managed to get out of bed and into the shower 🤣

DS has 3 Nat 5's to sit next week and has just tested positive for covid. Has this happened to anyone else? I guess it's a case of submitting special circumstances form and hoping the school, provides enough evidence. Rubbish timing!!

PrincessRamone · 15/05/2022 09:58

Oh no @untitled01 !

I think in theory he can go in after 3 days? (Might be 5)

How is he feeling? What were his prelim Results like?

WeAllHaveWings · 15/05/2022 10:10

Oh no, terrible timing, with only a couple of weeks left. This is part of what ds's school sent out, which appears to be they dont test and they go in with minor symptoms and only stay at home if really unwell. Probably best to contact your own school tomorrow for guidance.

From 1st May onwards
You no longer need to isolate or take a PCR test and can attend school/ your exam if you are well and even if you have minor Covid-19 symptoms. The exception to this is if you have a very high temperature and are too unwell to attend the exam. In this case the advice above should be followed which is routine practice during the exam diet and you should isolate for 3 days or until your temperature has returned to normal.
The SQA do not require proof of Covid-19 or a test, however, in line with the Exceptional Circumstances Request Service Policy and previous Exceptional Circumstance practice, the school needs to be able to validate and confirm that a candidate is unable to attend an exam. This is usually in the form of a Doctor's letter.

He has a high temperature and didn't sleep well last night. His prelim results were very good. I'll contact his school tomorrow for advice.

PrincessRamone · 15/05/2022 10:19

Hopefully you’ll be able to get a Dr’s letter easily enough.

MistressIggi · 15/05/2022 10:41

You just go in if you have covid, I think being too unwell or having a high temperature are the only exceptions (I'm not sure why a high temp is worse than a hacking cough - maybe it's more infectious?) Seems so far from what we've been doing for so long, it's hard to get used to!
I hope he feels better soon Flowers

PrincessRamone · 15/05/2022 10:56

I wonder what happens if you are ethically opposed to sending them in while contagious?

WeAllHaveWings · 15/05/2022 11:46

Suspect, without a drs note for special circumstances, they would be treated the same as just not showing up. Not sure if they would then be able to use this years appeals process.

Did anyone's teen do Higher Human Biology today?
Wondering was their verdict was on the paper?
My DD is gutted. She said it was so hard. She doesn't think she's done well. She said all her very high achieving friends thought it was a breeze!

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 23/05/2022 17:31

I don’t know about the human higher but the biology higher was apparently really tricky. Lots of weirdly worded questions etc :(

WeAllHaveWings · 04/06/2022 14:10

All exams over and time for them to relax now until results day!

ds had his leavers day last week and has finished school. Thankfully no drama at his school and everyone is looking forward to the leavers dance mid June.

He is spending his time PT working, going to gym, sleeping until early afternoon and hanging out with his girlfriend until the early hours. Most of his friends now have PT jobs before going to uni and they are finding if difficult to arrange time around their shifts where they can meet up together to do things and he is finding frustrating. They need to learn to plan in advance their work rotas, but any suggestion of that gets a grunt in return 🤷‍♀️

can anyone tell me how you find out your banding for Highers? It is not on the results certificate, right? Just wondered if there is a way to find out without having to wait until school restarts.

Sootess · 02/07/2022 05:51

Mine got theirs from school in an email the day after the results come out.

The school should have given your DC information on what will happen around results day.
There will be staff in school for a few days to deal with urgent issues and queries.

Bluepeach · 02/07/2022 06:36

@Sootess I already had an email from school saying they will only share bands with S6s who specifically need a banding for university and my son is S5 - was just wondering if school is the only source of this info as he is very invested in the band so will be a long wait from 9th August until school starts again!

WeAllHaveWings · 07/08/2022 11:30

How is everyone? Not long now till results day!

Just seen this

https://news.stv.tv/scotland/first-sqa-exams-in-three-years-have-been-graded-generously-in-wake-of-covid-education-body-confirms

Is the hard working 2022 cohort going to be tarred with the same brush as 2020-2021 and their grades looked on with suspicion and not taken seriously again? Really wish they hadn't reported this. ☹️

OP posts:
untitled01 · 07/08/2022 12:55

I'm not surprised by this article. I'm sure it was reported earlier this year that exam results in 2022 would be higher than those achieved in 2019, but not as high as 2020/2021 results. Results needed to be reduced or 'levelled off' as universities were struggling to find places for all applicants. Hopefully, as exams actually took place this year the results will be viewed in a more positive manner
