In offices are a bit like a restaurant need masks when wandering around or in a face to face but not when sitting at a desk.

I could even accept if schools were the same masks going from room to room or if a teacher needed to sit closely with a child to explain stuff but all day in masks just seems very unfair.

That's what makes me angry about it, the MSPs should be subject to the same rules as schools even try it for a week. See how they all get on id guess the rules would change sharpish

WouldBeGood · 18/01/2022 22:10

Even the crazed doctor who was espousing they bevfits of cloth masks lined with a pantyliner is now saying cloth masks rubbish 🤷🏻‍♀️

And France, with all the vaccine passports and masks, had 450,000 cases in a day

Rules for offices are masks are required in communal area (staircases, lifts etc). Inside offices is down to the companies assessment - i asked my staff if they wanted to wear them within the office, and none of them did. We have probably 3 - 4 metres between desks though

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 18/01/2022 22:33

In uni we have to wear them walking but when at our desks it's fine to take off.

I suppose that's a unique position in that lecturers don't need to come in. The ones that are booking labs are the ones who want to do in person teaching so maybe less bothered?

I feel like even when this is all over (which I think might be soon) government owned buildings like schools, libraries etc will keep things like mask mandates, pre booking etc. I hate that.

MaxNormal · 18/01/2022 22:47

Those vaccine passports have really done the trick.

For Frances main aim they willsee it as a success. They stated from the start the aim was to drive up vaccination rates it's gone from 60% to 90%. It definitely makes no difference on case numbers though!

From speaking to DH who was skiing he said they were a real pain for getting into places at lunchtime (not France) as he would have to queue for 15 mins to get it scanned (ski slopes limited options!)

They also had the "official piece of paper which you need to print off and have a good reason to leave the house" thing.

But yeah, Scotland is so much worse than everyone else. Hmm

Lockdownbear · 19/01/2022 08:32

The official papers to leave the house was only in the initial lock down when Nobody knew what we were dealing with and our swings were locked up.
We didn't need official papers but there was nowhere to go.

I agree the French vaccine passports was about driving up vaccine numbers rather than anything else.

tigger1001 · 19/01/2022 08:35

@Haudyourwheesht

A lot of teachers still in favour of masks tho. (Not me!) Are masks still compulsory in offices?
We still have to wear them if away from our desk but not while at our desk. But we are all socially distanced at our desks
WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 19/01/2022 09:00

We don't wear masks in our office. Only a few people are going in though and everyone is quite happy not to wear masks (small teams, we all know each other really well and would know if anyone felt uncomfortable about it).

MarshmallowFondant · 19/01/2022 09:11

It doesn't matter what teachers think. Or pupils think. Or parents think. All that matters is what Larry Flanagan thinks. That's Larry Flanagan, the well-known Professor of epidemiology and infectious diseases. Oh wait, he's the English teacher whose previous experience is as a Labour militant tendency rabble rouser.

Yet it's lovely Larry who is singlehandedly deciding SNP policy on masks in schools.

I could not BELIEVE that the news today are saying that the government are debating whether exams are going ahead in April/May or not. Kids have already done prelims or are in hte middle of them. More uncertainty and dithering from our dear leaders.

Lockdownbear · 19/01/2022 09:20

Wtf surely to goodness exams have to go q head this year.
Even if it means schools kids sitting them in classrooms rather than big halls of a couple of hundred kids.

It's really not a popular view on here but things would be different if our dear leaders where watching their own kids stress, get depressed, struggle with sore and chapped skin, definitely and out of sight out of mind mentally.

WouldBeGood · 19/01/2022 09:24

Exactly @Lockdownbear

I agree with you. I don't judge anyone for not wanting or not being able to have children (dealt with several miscarriages myself) but the fact is my impressions of parenthood from my nieces and nephews that I had before I had my own children were way off the mark. I don't believe that you can possibly know what the children/teenagers have been going through if you don't have direct experience, and it shouldn't be that controversial to say so. I don't have direct experience of all manner of things so don't pretend to understand what others are going through. NS can't help that of course, but she should make sure that parents of children of all ages are well represented in her advisor list to get a rounded view, and I really don't think that's the case.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 19/01/2022 09:39

Agreed @MarshmallowFondant

And while it's the EIS's job to advocate for teachers (though the ones I know don't think much of Larry), no-one in government is advocating for children. Their education, their well-being, the harms.

Mind you DS says the masks mean no-one knows who's starting to get a bit pimply so it's not all bad 😂 (not withstanding that the masks are probably contributing to skin issues).

MaxNormal · 19/01/2022 10:35

@Lockdownbear I don't have children and I totally agree with you.

I haven't seen the news today. They can't be debating that now surely??

Exams need to go ahead. It's stressful enough as it is for teenagers without the constant will they won't they?!

MarshmallowFondant · 19/01/2022 11:02

Yes, they're still dithering over it. Mammy Sturgeon saying exams will go ahead "provided it is safe to do so", but as per usual, failing to define what she means by "safe".

www.scotsman.com/news/politics/tories-urge-nicola-sturgeon-to-commit-to-exams-in-scotland-definitely-going-ahead-3532415

Shirley Whatsit, the education secretary, has said a final decision may not be taken until the END OF MARCH.

inews.co.uk/news/scotland/scotland-exams-decision-taken-march-shirley-anne-somerville-1391516

Fucking outrageous. And yes, it very much is relevant that many of the front bench either don't have children, or don't have children in the secondary school age bracket.

It's scandalous. It's safe to go to a rugby stadium with 60k others, but they can't commit to a couple of hundred kids sitting in a hall, with other kids they see daily, to do exams??

I want to say it's shocking, but it's sadly not ☹️

IKeptYouLikeAnOath · 19/01/2022 11:15

If kids can be in classrooms why can't they be in gym halls doing exams?!

I don't get it.

Ahhh again trying to apply logic to SG rules and thought process will just send you batty!

It's not logical at all like many many other things!

Lockdownbear · 19/01/2022 11:46

@IKeptYouLikeAnOath

Because of some daft rules like the kids could all be in a theater or church together but aren't allowed a school assembly.

My logic has it they've now known about covid for two years. Why on earth have they not procured portacabins / empty offices / community halls / other places to either hold exams or to house other children so the school classrooms can be used for the exams.

Joined up thinking, look ahead, joined up thinking.

frasersmummy · 19/01/2022 12:39

There is absolutely no reason why the exams cant go ahead..does the coronavirus act not expire in march 2022 .. was it not 2 years from it was passed into law??

Surely if it expires things have to go back to normal

WoodstockJ · 19/01/2022 12:49

I hope it’s ok for me to chip in…
I am thoroughly disgusted that my S4 son couldn’t sit his prelims in the gym all at the end of November. The Highers and Adv. highers are currently taking place in the hall!
It makes no sense at all.
I had a conversation with the HT in mid-Nov, prior to Omicron concerns and his reason for not holding them in the hall was pupil anxiety and not covid related. Not sure how that’s going to help when they are anxious in May and have to face an unfamiliar exam hall experience.
And I absolutely agree that are kids are being treated like crap in all this. Nobody in SG seems to give a thought to them.
