Why is steak pie traditional? I’m from darn sarf!

ElephantOfRisk · 01/01/2022 13:01

No idea why steak pie is traditional. It wasn't when I was growing up. Back then I'm pretty sure it was left overs from hogmanay buffet including stovies and tripe. I think everyone was too hungover to cook properly.

For many years now it's been steak pie for us along with a fair proportion of Scotland.

We are having ours with mash, Carrots, peas and there might be a few sprouts in the garage.

I have a sticky toffee pudding with either out of date custard or out of date cream for pudding later.

mrsmacmc · 01/01/2022 18:58

@DrinkingHomeForChristmas my gran always served neeps with steak pie when I was growing up ❤️

Hope all the posters are having a good NYD ✨

dementedpixie · 01/01/2022 19:28

We had steak pie with roast potatoes and mashed carrot and swede. Ds had a steak and fries and corn on the cob as he doesn't eat steak pie or mash

ElephantOfRisk · 01/01/2022 19:48

We had mash, carrots and cabbage and DS2 had peas and corn and DS1 had mushrooms.

However, our steak pie was disappointing. It was tasty enough and there were loads of big chinks of good quality meat and lovely gravy but the meat wasn't really tender and it was a bit dry. Apart from last year we've always bought from the same butcher but the local outlet doesn't stock their pies any more so I drove out to the village that their main shop is to collect one. I'm not a big driving fan and because of all restrictions and working from home, it's been a while since I've driven on NSL roads. So it was a bigger deal to go get it than it might be normally. It's such a shame. I was so looking forward to it, skipped breakfast and lunch preparing myself for it. My stressy head is now feeling that I've let everyone down but I know that is ridiculous.

Selkiesarereal · 01/01/2022 19:49

I always assumed that steak was so expensive that it was the only time most could afford it but needed to make it go further, hence in a pie. Couldn’t imagine not having it today though!

Faevern · 01/01/2022 20:01

Is it not because it was supposed to help cure a hangover?
