The festive special!

As always, all railing welcome, along with good things or humorous asides. No resilience wankery. This is the safe place to let out anything that’s doing your head in.

I kinda like him. He's a severe overexplainer but I think he's trying quite hard to explain the four harms, and how they try to make decisions based on balancing these. It's an interesting circle to attempt to square.

MaxNormal · 30/12/2021 13:56

I have no time for anything any of them say - not Johnson, Sturgeon, Drakeford, not Starmer. Can't stand any of them. God only knows who I'm meant to vote for.

frasersmummy · 30/12/2021 13:57

@ElephantOfRisk ..gobshite..such a great and underused word
It's what I'm gonna start calling nicola sturgeon as it just sums her up beautifully

WouldBeGood · 30/12/2021 14:09

Yeo, @MaxNormal with you there!

It’s nuts. There should be someone!!

I quite like Chris Whitty! But I love a graph! 😂 just think he explains stuff pretty well and is realistic.

ElephantOfRisk · 30/12/2021 14:29

I didn't mind whitty at the beginning but he was caught out using old projections/data to make stuff more frightening (when he had more recent stuff available to him) so I've been done with him for a while also.

Lockdownbear · 30/12/2021 15:11

Wales have just gone to 7 days isolation. How long before Sturgeon follows?

WouldBeGood · 30/12/2021 15:21

Surely she’ll have to do it now?

Though if it’s as bad as JL saying we will be locked up again, surely?

OP posts:
frasersmummy · 30/12/2021 15:22

I think Nicola Sturgeon is too stubborn to give in but it does make her the odd one in the uk so maybe she will step back into line

heelforheelandtoefortoe · 30/12/2021 15:44

Help needed re isolation

BIL and family have just tested positive. Haven't seen them since Xmas eve.

MIL and FIL are getting tested as they have seen them.

Me, DH and DD have seen MIL and FIL today. Our LFTs are negative.

Do we need to self isolate? or just keep doing LFTs?

ecceromani · 30/12/2021 16:01

@heelforheelandtoefortoe
You don't need to do anything at moment as you are not a contact of a positive case, but probably wise to do LFT.
If MIL or FIL test positive then you need to self isolate until you get pcr.

OnceUponAWhine · 30/12/2021 16:09

So Wales now down to 7 days…Hmm

But, hey we’ll just follow the bespoke to Scotland science.

MarshmallowFondant · 30/12/2021 16:13

Bespoke to Scotland science. Grin The really sad thing is that people out there do actually believe that this is the case. That Saint Nicola is the only one who is getting it right, and that her only aim is to "keep us safe".

But given our very recent experience with test and protect, nobody is going to have a clue if you decide to go with the rUK policy, test on day 6/7 and go about your business. Nobody's going to check.

ecceromani · 30/12/2021 16:21

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
My money's on ours changing for the schools going back

RaraRachael · 30/12/2021 16:36

@ecceromani

This. Absolutely. Never mind that my holidays have been ruined by having to isolate for 10 days. It will be cut ready for school going back because the only alternative is having to send classes home as there will be nobody to teach them. or our ASN pupils getting no help yet again because their teachers are used to cover classes
frasersmummy · 30/12/2021 16:43

@ecceromani..

Yup . My teenager is in isolation up till the 5th .schools go back 6th. A couple of days would allow him some social time and also allow me to shop for uniform he has outgrown..

But i firmly believe she will hold on to 10 days for whole households till the 5/6th

Why ? Will the science change next week.. you know its extreme when even Wales is less draconian

And I see lots of pictures of people in Carlisle and or Newcastle this weekend

Can she really not see what she is doing??

WouldBeGood · 30/12/2021 16:46

Yes, even if she believes she’s right she needs to look at the unintended consequences and factor those in

OP posts:
ecceromani · 30/12/2021 17:00

So JL says we're going to see much bigger numbers in 2-3 weeks.
The whole household 10 day isolation will be massively disruptive to education in January when SG discovers they don't have a large cupboard of spare teachers in the basement at holyrood!
Not to mention all the senior pupils who'll miss their prelims

derxa · 30/12/2021 18:06

Thank fuck we're down here in SE England for Hogmanay.

StarryEyeSurprise · 30/12/2021 18:25

If 1 in 10 had it in London recently, does that mean the rest of the UK can expect to experience the same in the coming weeks?

WouldBeGood · 30/12/2021 18:27

Probably @StarryEyeSurprise, although Scotland had quite a few early cases too?

OP posts:
Lockdownbear · 30/12/2021 18:42

If 1 in 10 had it in London and London hasn't turned into the City of the Dying. What do we think will happen if when the rest of the country have 1 in 10 with covid?

I mean really has anyone ever analysised what percentage of people have common cold / flu / norovirus / tummy bug at any given point in time?
I bet there are times it's more than 1 in 10!

ecceromani · 30/12/2021 18:46

Probably @StarryEyeSurprise as Jason Leitch saying we're few weeks away from the peak yet.
Although I think we have much higher vaccination rates than London so that should stand us in good stead against serious illness

ElephantOfRisk · 30/12/2021 18:52

Well quite @Lockdownbear. But why look at it rationally when you could just panic folks instead?

I was having a look at the excess deaths stuff the other day - it's not been updated since before Christmas, but it was 55 folk died within 28 days of a positive test and yet excess deaths were over 100, so nearly half of the excess deaths were completely unrelated to covid and the rest were not necessary from covid (since we don't get that figure still?).
