@Groovee first Christmas since I lost my dad too, I've still not been to see his partner and I don't see travel restrictions easing much next year with this bloody omicron strain. There is no sign of getting any closure 😢

And I've just been for a covid test so that'd be the icing on the bloody cake.

Haudyourwheesht · 06/12/2021 21:06

I think last year we were all thinking 'the vaccine's nearly here, things will be better soon' but now we're all vaccinated, and things aren't better. But we're not in the tiers system, with its 3 weekly reviews, so there's no date when things might improve, it's just 'oh ffs, what now?' and it's just one wee shitty development after another. Plus brexit, and both crappy governments, and global warming, and it's hard to pick yourself up out of it.

WouldBeGood · 06/12/2021 21:21

Yep. There was hope last year.

ssd · 06/12/2021 21:30

I felt ok before this new varient. I think we were lulled into a false sense of security, here in the UK, with Scotland v England and all the shitey politics. We forgot about the rest of the world.

shouldistop · 07/12/2021 09:14

The baby slept better last night.

@WouldBeGood I'll be holding you to the offer of telling me what to pack Grin

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement fellow bletherers.

WouldBeGood · 07/12/2021 09:18

Right, @shouldistop, tell us the plan and we will help with packing 😃

shouldistop · 07/12/2021 09:30

We're getting the train through to Edinburgh Friday morning, dumping our bags at the hotel then a quick look round the Christmas markets. We have lunch booked for 1pm then drinks at a posh cocktail place at 3pm-4.30pm. We'll head back to the hotel then to have showers, get changed, fix make up or whatever then we have dinner booked at a pub type place at 7pm, they have live music so we'll stay there for the night.
On Saturday late morning we'll go for brunch then get the train home.
I really need to do my nails (no time for a salon visit), sort my eyebrows and maybe put some fake tan on but I'm better doing all of that on Thursday really.
Wondering if I should dress up on Friday night? I have a really nice teal, velvet wrap dress I could wear. And maybe just a pinafore dress with tights and boots during the day?
Then no idea what to take for Saturday morning brunch. Jeans and a nice top? Don't know if I have any nice tops!

shouldistop · 07/12/2021 09:32

Oh and any recommendations for brunch in Edinburgh on Saturday would be appreciated as we don't have anything booked. Near the royal mile if poss.

titsintiers · 07/12/2021 09:43

I really like Loudon's @shouldistop but it might not be close enough to the royal mile.

WouldBeGood · 07/12/2021 09:53

The Edinburgh Larder in Blackfriars street is a brunch place that looks nice. Haven’t been, but on my list! Jeans and a jumper would be fine for a brunch in Edinburgh.

Sounds like you’re sorted @shouldistop! I’d start by doing the brows and tan before Thursday in case time runs away with you and it feels like a scurry.

Your outfits for Saturday sound great. Remember chargers, and I always take my wee speaker so I can listen to music at the hotel rather than hotel tv.

(I always take wine and a corkscrew too but I’m a proper alkie)

ElephantOfRisk · 07/12/2021 10:01

Southern Cross cafe, near the top of Cockburn Street.

I want to go to Edinburgh now!

ssd · 07/12/2021 10:16

That sounds lovely @shouldistop

Id love a posh cocktail in Edinburgh but i wouldn't know where to go, where are you going?

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 07/12/2021 10:29

We went to GlenCoe this weekend CHILD FREE and it was beautiful. I deliberately chose it rather than the usual of going to Glasgow or Edinburgh for the night, as we had no choice but to do nothing!

Had a lovely dinner next to a log fire....very romantic and chilled.

shouldistop · 07/12/2021 10:32

@ssd le monde hotel. We tried to get the dome but it was completely booked up 😔

Rae36 · 07/12/2021 10:43

You could walk down the Royal Mile to Mimi's Little Bakehouse for brunch? Lovely cakes.

I tried to book the Dome in November for a table this week and it was fully booked. My friend was there last week, she booked in July!

Rae36 · 07/12/2021 10:44

We went to The Alchemist in the new St James Quarter instead of the Dome. It was lovely. We just had cocktails though, can't comment on the food although it looked great.

shouldistop · 07/12/2021 10:45

@Rae36 crazy isn't it. It was September I tried to book and there was nothing for December

Rae36 · 07/12/2021 10:54

I'm booking The Dome in June next year. It's probably totally overrated but I'm determined to get in.

shouldistop · 07/12/2021 10:55

Thanks for all the brunch suggestions, will check them out.

Baby ds started nursery today! He'll go for 2 mornings a week so started him a month before I go back to work to gradually get him used to being away from me. I work 3 days a week and my mum and mil will have him the times he's not at nursery.
We've finally managed to cut out his middle of the day feed out so I'm less worried about going back to work now.

This morning I've managed to watch an hour or so of tv and gut and clean the playroom so I'm feeling productive AND relaxed.

ssd · 07/12/2021 10:58

The dome always fills up so early Sad

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 07/12/2021 11:28

My friend used to work in The Dome, and in the kitchen they were told to reuse food off of plates that came back after tables were cleared.

Don't all rush at once! Envy

Yuck 🤢

I've never eaten there (thankfully!) only been at Christmas for a drink to see the decorations.

WouldBeGood · 07/12/2021 12:35

That’s rank @BlameItOnTheBlackStar!

Many moons ago I had a holiday job in the tearoom in a famous castle. We had to take the fillings out of unsold rolls and put them in fresh ones for the next day 🤢

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 07/12/2021 13:53

I bet it happens loads of places! Never in any place I've worked thankfully, but I'm sure it must go on in so many seemingly upmarket venues. Totally rank!
