My evening is sorted. I'm not going out in that weather so have my comfort telly watching of 'two doors down' on. Dogs settled for the night and a bottle of wine on the go. I'm also trying to block out all bad new stories.

Lidlfix · 26/11/2021 20:08

Amaze, the answer will vary greatly from school to school. Sorry, I know that's no help. My experience as a parent and professional (different schools) is that the "personalisation and choice" options for S2 into S3 is bull. I'm lucky as an English teacher in that my subject is obligatory through to S4 so I have no sprint towards N5 or to "sell my subject" I know that throughout my school S3 are studying N5 topics as those subjects feel there just isn't time in S4 and boy has recent times magnified that view.

My DD3 experience was- picked Physics for S3 . Enjoyed it but realised how Maths heavy it was and that she might struggle in N5 and was also restricting her Higher options . Tried to change to Biology for S4 - no you've missed too much content, could cope with challenge but not trying to squeeze in content . S4 DD3 limped through Ds for most assessments but managed a B through big sis coaching her .But as she didn't want to do Higher Maths or Physcs she'd basically picked her Highers in S2 Sad.

There's probably a much greater interplay between Social Subjects but Modern Studies tends to be the common ground. For context DD1 is a Geography teacher, DD2 studying History and Politics and DD3 and 4 following the trajectory so they are experts in that area of the curriculum .

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 26/11/2021 20:23

Anyone else out of power? Ours has been off since 6pm and not looking likely to come on before midnight. We're wrapped in blankets and getting pretty bored!

GrouchyKiwi · 26/11/2021 20:27

BlackStar Hope it's back on for you soon! Our is fine but lots of areas around us are out so I'm glad I charged everything earlier just in case.

amazeandastonish · 26/11/2021 22:04

yes I did history and politics at uni too so could definitely help DD.

Just worried there's a lot of catching up to potentially do

shouldistop · 26/11/2021 22:12

God, it's blowing a hoolie out there. Feel like Dorothy in the wizard of oz, can actually hear the roof tiles rattling.

ssd · 26/11/2021 22:17

I feel really sorry for the schoolkids throughout all this, they young folk have definitely bore the brunt of it all.

Aurea · 26/11/2021 22:24

I'm going to share with you my secret, successful, super quick and easy pasta recipe. It's been the favourite of my DCs from the age of 5 to 20+.

Put several cloves of diced garlic (sometimes a full bulb), 1-2 packs of good quality smoked bacon cut up, a couple of leeks (thinly sliced) into a pan with oil. Cook gently for a few minutes. Add three peppers, two or three courgettes and cook for a few more minutes. Then add a large can of drained sweetcorn.

In the meantime cook a whole packet of pasta. Drain. Add a large amount of grated cheese (200-250 g). Let this melt in for a mo and mix in. Next add a whole pot of crème fraiche and mix this in gently. Then add the veg and bacon from the pan and stir in gently. Voila!!

This serves 4-6 large appetites. Yum 😋

WouldBeGood · 27/11/2021 08:48

The 8 subjects in s3 and drop 2 is the same here, it seems @amazeandastonish. Ds going into s3 next year and I was told this by the school.

Don’t know about a switch though.

ssd · 27/11/2021 14:52

That sounds lovely @Aurea

This sounds unreal. I cannot wait to try this.
GrouchyKiwi · 27/11/2021 18:29

That does sound good Aurea.

I managed to burn my wrist while cooking today. It's very sore.

So very glad the wind has died down.

Skyrain · 27/11/2021 20:05

@amazeandastonish - we are 9 in S3 down to 7 here. My DD changed an option going into S4 and picked up chemistry. I had to teach her the first unit of N5 over the summer but she did fine and went onto do Higher the following year. I am a teacher but not a Chem teacher but with all the resources that are available it should be possible to do this, otherwise they are making major decisions when very young. Can you ask if they can switch subjects now, as that may be possible?

amazeandastonish · 27/11/2021 20:07

Yes I can try to find that out, might come down to timetabling though

ssd · 27/11/2021 23:13

My living room is nice and cosy. Its small and a bit packed with the washing in here too so it dries. But ive got a few twinkly lights here and there and it gives a nice glow. And I've got a Baileys on ice. I could have went to a big party night but I'm too tired and don't want to chance covid even further than i do at work. I love staying in, I'm a real homebody.
Hope everyone has a peaceful night.

Haudyourwheesht · 27/11/2021 23:57

I'm the same - had the opportunity to go to the pub tonight but stayed in with a glass of wine and watched Queen on the telly. In bed now in the knowledge that I'll be glad tomorrow morning. (DH snoring, mind you). Old age isn't that bad, really. Grin

ssd · 28/11/2021 08:21

Believe it or not, i have a major headache from my 2 glasses of bailey's Blush, I'm such a lightweight. It'll take me till next summer to finish my xmas bottle Grin

Ive woken up to snow, just a wee bit but its lovely to see it. Dh snoring here besides me too @Haudyourwheesht...think ill get up for some tea and toast, plain breed of course Smile

prettybird · 28/11/2021 08:51

I had a G&T and two small glasses of Prosecco, along with multiple glasses of water, at the 60th party I was at last night and I've got a headache this morning Confused

I'm going to blame cheap Prosecco Grin - I'm fine with other sparkling wines Wink

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 28/11/2021 08:56

We're going for a new Christmas tree today. I'm unreasonably excited!

prettybird · 28/11/2021 09:08

We get a fresh tree but have decided to get ours a week earlier than usual - so about the 10th rather than the following week. I saw Lidl had trees on Friday - but we won't buy pre-netted trees as we want to see the shape Xmas Grin

The place we go cuts their own trees, and go and get more every few days, so they're always really fresh Xmas Smile

GrouchyKiwi · 28/11/2021 09:10

Our children are so happy this morning.

The blethering goes on...thread 2
BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 28/11/2021 09:15

We had maybe a centimetre of patchy snow yesterday and drove past a toddler being pulled along on a sledge, the dad had clearly given up and was following toddler orders Grin

ElephantOfRisk · 28/11/2021 09:45

I've had a headache since my jabbing on Wednesday so I'm not blaming the glass of cider I had yesterday.

Still don't feel right but not sure which jab it was.

Felt really weird last night too can't really describe 🤷‍♀️

Hope everyone feels better soon.

I love seeing the kids out sledging ,although the reality is usually not as good as you imagine,,with freezing wet feet and hands and lost gloves Grin

I'm glad mine are past that stage though I do have fond memories.

Headache still here after 2 solpadeine....need to hit the brufen next. @prettybird, at least you went out Grin

ssd · 28/11/2021 09:48

@ElephantOfRisk ,take it easy, paracetamol and water and feet up. I think it'll be the flu jag thats done it, the first one hits you like a ton of bricks. Dh feels similar to you. This year is my 2nd flu jag and i was ok this time , last year, hellish!!
