We do a small turkey too Xmas Blush - this year 4.4kg amongst 6 (I choose the smallest one in Lidl Xmas Wink). I used to do an Open House on Boxing Day and the ham was a mainstay of that. Since then, ds has become a fiend for it and could pretty much eat the whole thing on its own Xmas Shock

Haudyourwheesht · 23/12/2021 22:16

We're having beef. The kids won't eat any roast meat and we prefer beef so feck it. They'll probably have macaroni cheese.

WouldBeGood · 23/12/2021 23:01

Beef here too @Haudyourwheesht.

DS was 11lbs 4

It’s amazing I’m not broken 🤣🤣

shouldistop · 24/12/2021 06:17

Christ mine were 8lb12 and 8lb8 and I thought they were big Grin

Dh was 9lb10 Shock

shouldistop · 24/12/2021 06:19

We're doing Turkey and Gammon Smile we usually do roast beef as well but it's just too much work with 5yo and 1yo. I'm not sure how we managed last year when the baby was a newborn Shock

shouldistop · 24/12/2021 06:20

The baby will eat a full roast but my 5yo won't and neither with niece and nephew so we're just giving them sausages & mash.

Groovee · 24/12/2021 06:25

My 2 were tiny. 5lb 4oz for Dd and 6lb 10oz for ds. Their cousin was 11lb 4oz.

shouldistop · 24/12/2021 06:27

@Groovee aw that's so dinky. Was dd early?

My friends wee girl was only about 5lbs, she was full term but 37 weeks. My friend is tiny too though.

Yeah I left work at 4.30pm to start my maternity leave and was admitted to hospital at 6pm with pre-eclampsia. Ds arrived 2 days early.

rookiemere · 24/12/2021 07:20

@shouldistop we're doing gammon and turkey this year as well. I think I need to soak the gammon in water today to desalt it or something- does that sound right ?

I did a much reduced turkey crown last night from Morrisons as a trial run and managed to end up with dry crumbly turkey- it seems to be a choice between that or raw for me. Think I'll stick some butter under the skin for tomorrow's beast.

Rookiedog is quite excited by the big chicken leftovers. Less happy with our two year old grand niece who has taken his spot on the sofa. It will take many scraps to recover his joie de vivre.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 24/12/2021 07:33

Oh I love a Christmas ham, but we've bought a pre-cooked one this year. @rookiemere you don't have to soak most hams for de-salting these days, unless butcher/packet instructions specify. If not sure, you can trim a sliver off, fry it and taste it. If too salty, soak it overnight.

We sat and planned oven timings etc. last night. I love Christmas dinner. We alway get a Kelly bronze turkey now - they are a £££ Christmas treat, but so very easy to get right and cooking times are much shorter which suits us.

Lidlfix · 24/12/2021 08:25

Huge beef joint now in the freezer. Tiny turkey for me n DD2, DD4 still pretty sick. DD3 will spoiled by DM and Dsis. DH won't get home till late so we won't wait for him. Have a wee ham too and will see if they feel like it.

It'll be very different, a real story for the grandweans one day Xmas Smile

WouldBeGood · 24/12/2021 09:19

I’ve remembered to take my beef out of the freezer!

shouldistop · 24/12/2021 09:52

@rookiemere the butcher said we don't have to soak ours. I know some need it though.

Dh and ds1 are making the soup just now, ds2 is watching baby tv and I'm going to have a cup of tea. I still need to wrap 2 wee things and clean the dining room but I can't get in til dh has packed up his work stuff for the holidays.

I'm taking ds1 to the carnival at lunchtime, managed to swap my tickets from January to today as this is the last day it's open.

shouldistop · 24/12/2021 09:55

What do you all do on Christmas Day? What are your traditions?

In the morning we'll open presents first thing then have a nice breakfast. After that we'll have our showers, get ready then go out for a long walk with the dog. We place chocolate coins from the elves along the way for ds1 so he doesn't complain about being away from his toys Grin

Everyone arrives about 2pm and we eat about 4pm.

ElephantOfRisk · 24/12/2021 10:23

When the kids were little, they'd bring stockings threw to our bed and there would be a carton of long life strawberry milk and a brioche in there which they'd have while getting their stocking stuff out and DH and I taking turns for a quick shower. Then one would nip down and get all the lights on and camera on and then boys down for presents, then a quick breakfast, play for a bit and get out with some sort of toy for a walk. Back, play and movies while getting dinner ready and eat 3ish. TV and games after dinner.

Nowadays since DSs are adults, me and sometimes the cat get up and wait a few hours for other to appear, presents then breakfast and showers then walk to the pub, walk home ,then dinner and games and tv and nap :)

Our Christmas Day is normally DC bring stockings to our room early, then we head downstairs. Cup of tea for me then present opening. Normally have a nice breakfast of some sort, get ready and then either go to relatives or start cooking depending on where we're eating. I'd love to fit a nice walk in but despite getting up at the crack of dawn and doing lots of food prep in advance I can never find the time to fit one in. Not sure where I'm going wrong!

GrouchyKiwi · 24/12/2021 11:58

Wow at all your lovely large babies! Mine were all in the 7lb range, and the biggest at 7lb15 was more than enough of a challenge! She was off the charts in length, though.

We encourage the children to investigate their stockings in their rooms for as long as possible Wink before we all go down to open presents at 8am. We have pastries for breakfast (and tropical fruit, but I forgot to buy that this year), then Christmas dinner at about 1pm. DH insists on watching Queenie at 3pm, then I send them all out for a wander with the dog while I rest. Grin

ssd · 25/12/2021 01:06

Merry Christmas everyone Xmas Smile

I'm in bed, dh is watching something on telly, the boys are both out.

I'll be up first, santa will arrive then, I never put the presents out until they are asleep on Christmas eve, but I'll be sleeping before anyone, so it'll wait till the morning.

Hope you all have as happy and peaceful a Christmas day as possible.

titsintiers · 25/12/2021 07:47

Merry Christmas to you all. Thanks for the chat this year 🎄🎅🏽🥳 hope everyone has a peaceful day

prettybird · 25/12/2021 10:13

Merry Christmas to everyone Xmas Smile

Ds was 8lb 15oz Shock He was then a prime example of "catch down" growth and took 6 or 7 weeks to regain his birthweight, despite being happy healthy and alert Confused. He then, as the consultant said who was more interested in what my dad, a former colleague, was doing , moved onto the 50th centile and followed that. He also told me to stop the faff of supplemental EBM feeds but not to stop breastfeeding and just enjoy my baby Grin

Here is my ham ready to go in the oven with its coke and mustard/sugar glaze and the end result. I over-boiled it slightly so it fell apart slightly but it's wonderfully moist and tasty.

This was our turkey: bribed in a citrus solution, so it's lovely and moist. Xmas Smile

I can relax today Xmas Grin

ssd · 25/12/2021 10:40

All looks lovely @prettybird, the ham especially, i love a ham but never make it. You might have inspired me!!
My turkey crown is in the slow cooker, haven't a clue how long it'll take so its on high. Don't know when we'll eat, see how it all goes. No one except me is awake. Nice and relaxed here.

Groovee · 25/12/2021 11:37

Ffs DD's work PCR has come back positive. Ds is testing positive on the lateral flows. Dh, myself and DD's boyfriend is testing negative.

The airport test centre was hooching for PCR's this morning. So we're now in isolation.

ssd · 25/12/2021 11:44

Oh no @Groovee, thats rotten. Were you travelling somewhere from an airport, sorry if I've missed that.
