Dunoon relocation

Hi, does anyone live in Dunoon, Scotland? We are thinking of relocating there from Brighton and wondered what it’s like for families. We have an older child in secondary school and two in primary. We would know know thoughts about job opportunities, tourist trade etc.
Thanks!

The Cowal Penninsula is a gorgeous area, I have a relative who is in hospitality there. Suffice to say she pretty much closes up from Nov to March. It’s maybe just me, but a Brighton to Dunoon move would be a bit of a culture shock, especially for teens.

Sorry OP, posted too soon- I should add my relative is not from there originally and moved up from down south (not South East) when she only had one young baby, she now has other DCs who’ve grown up there and she speaks highly of the kind of childhood they’ve had. I also know of several businesses for sale (hotels, restaurants) near her, I don’t know if that reflects how tough it can be right now.

My Gran lived there. In all honesty not much to do for families and a bit of a trench to get anywhere unless you use the Gourock Ferry. It’s pretty quiet. Has a small hospital but emergencies need to come across the Clyde and all the way to paisley now which would worry me a bit. Is there a specific reason you’ve chosen Dunoon?

Beautiful part of the country. Will be very quiet compared to Brighton. Would need to know a job area to know if there are opportunities!

Rekorderlig88 · 09/11/2021 20:41

Oh goodness.
It's a v isolating and insular place.
Lovely to visit but job opportu ites are v poor.

emmathedilemma · 10/11/2021 10:15

I've only visited but agree with PP that it will be a culture shock for teenagers from Brighton! It's a beautiful area but i've never seen a high street so quiet on a Saturday morning in all my life! That said, house prices are very cheap and it has an excellent chippy ;)

Dh is from the cowals, in-laws still live there, I personally would not move a teen to dunoon. You'll probably have to drive into Glasgow for work. It's surroundings may be beautiful but Dublin itself...

TheCanyon · 10/11/2021 10:23

Dublin is obviously meant to be dunoon. Cheers kindle.

Was there a driver for such a drastic move from Brighton, England ? Do you have family locally?

It's not somewhere I would particularly fancy moving to, as there's not much going on.

Maybe you want that though?

Tailendofsummer · 10/11/2021 17:40

It will be a lot colder than Brighton

hilbil21 · 10/11/2021 19:26

Can't think of anything worse Sad

Skeumorph · 11/11/2021 11:42

Ooof. Don't look at the geography and think, London to Brighton is what Glasgow is to Dunoon. It's not at all like that. It's a nice place in itself, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Not much happening.
Not a lot for families. If you're used to lots of kids clubs and sport stuff etc too you will feel quite cut off
Cut off is the word in general really. It feels a world away from the central belt and the ferry trip adds big logistics to the idea of e.g. going into Glasgow.
Shuts down ENTIRELY in winter.

Skeumorph · 11/11/2021 11:43

Oh and no to jobs. However... in this new world of WFH, it would indeed be possible to do a Glasgow based job if you were able to WFH a couple of days a week I guess.

Skeumorph · 11/11/2021 11:45

Is there a specific reason you’ve chosen Dunoon? - I assume the house prices, which say it all.

It is pretty though...
