Cop26 road closures

Has anyone got any information that's not just a wee fuzzy online map?
I've googled loads and am just confused.
I've not been in city centre in ages but will be going regularly from next week.
All i can really see is a map online covered in red ,which doesn't say much.

It looks like the whole of the city centre is a no go area for 3 weeks.

Personally i find it all a pain in the arse.

I don't think the city councillors have agreed anything yet (my understanding after watching some interview last night, I'm probably wrong about that!)

I did hear that as JB and the Queen are staying in Edinburgh that they might close bits of the M8 for a while. So much for reducing our climate impact!

The whole thing is a joke and all it'll do is bring more covid cases and we'll get shutdown again

I both live and work in the area. The whole city will be a no go zone. It will be total chaos for a month! I am absolutely dreading it.

My actual street is shut off for 3 weeks, no one actually knows what that means? Will we be able to get a car out in an emergency? Can we get deliveries? Who knows, not the residents that's for sure!

Basically if you can avoid the area for the 4 week period, do it!!

I know that the Nuffield health centre/gym in Finnieston is closing from the 18th Oct till the end of the conference (so about a month) because apparently Police Scotland and Glasgow City Council are to implement 'significant road closures' in that area. Something to do with security protocols. They say they expect disruption from next week, but I'm not sure why, unless they're going to be running drills or something. From the traffic scotland map it looks as though the whole area surrounding the SECC will be closed off or severely restricted, with knock-on effects for all other routes in or out of the city centre. I expect traffic on any routes still open will be completely log jammed (with all the consequent, and quite ironic, increases in emissions as cars are stuck in low gear rolling through), and to be honest I think I'll avoid it if at all possible. I remember how bad the commute got during the Commonwealth games and this sounds like it's going to be many times worse.

Haudyourwheesht · 14/10/2021 12:00

I'm going nowhere that I can't walk to, except to work, but if push came to shove I could walk there and back too. I think DH is hoping to persuade his boss to let him work from home at least part of the time, but they seem reluctant, which probably means doubling his commute time.

I really hope the Glasgow economy gets a massive boost from this (which it needs after being under covid restrictions for 10 months) because it's going to be a pita to live here for a bit.

emmathedilemma · 14/10/2021 12:07

It looks like all access routes into Finnieston Quay are closed and everywhere else is likely to be busy as a result! www.getreadyglasgow.com/cop26/traffic-and-travel

ssd · 14/10/2021 12:21

I work in city centre and commute from the southside. Can't get out of it.

@Haudyourwheesht just for info (depending on where you would walk to) quite a lot of the footpaths, including the pedestrian bridges, are going to be completely closed too.

Thanks for posting that @emmathedilemma, it's the first I'd heard of a lot of it. It's nice of them to letter drop three specific areas of Glasgow directly affected, but I do think they could perhaps of publicised all these issues a bit more widely. 100,000s people commute through there daily, including from surrounding LAs and really need to be aware that the whole area is going to be completely shut off!

ssd · 14/10/2021 12:33

Well i clicked on that link and I've seen it before and frankly the wee maps are shite. They aren't detailed enough. The area i work in is all covered in red. It says stations will be busier than usual. But it doesn't say 'Union Street closed 7am-6pm' or anything that useful. And the other grey maps dont have any street names so its a guess where anything is.

Thats why im so confused.

There's a slightly better one on Glasgow eco Trust as a pdf @ssd I'll try and attach

ssd · 14/10/2021 12:45

Thanks. I'm none the wiser. Maybe the actual city centre I'm on will be ok...area around central station and Buchanan St

OP posts:
ssd · 14/10/2021 12:47

I get the train in and walk.

My biggest worry is if I'm on the train needing the loo and some daftie protests and my train is stuck waiting...hope all the trains have loos on them Blush

MichelleScarn · 14/10/2021 12:53

Apparently travelinescotland is going to be constantly updating on the app?

YellowClouds · 14/10/2021 13:33

I don't think anywhere around the city centre will be ok.

I would give yourself plenty of time for travelling.

I've read of doctors surgeries not sure they'll be able to open, looking at putting some uni classes online and lots and lots of protests planned.

Some of the delegates are staying in Edinburgh so that will hugely impact the motorway and with lots of the slip roads/sections closed, as well as some main roads the place will be at a total standstill

ssd · 14/10/2021 18:45

What a pain. And apparently it won't benefit Glasgow all that much either. I think ordinary folks will stay away so extra business won't be all that much.

OP posts:
LizzieMacQueen · 14/10/2021 18:48

Do you hear Scotrail (drivers or conductors, I'm not sure) are planning to extend their strike ? To coincide with COP26.

ssd · 14/10/2021 18:50

Really? Oh jesus

OP posts:
mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 14/10/2021 20:04

The whole thing is ridiculous… delegates etc don’t need to be vaccinated or tested… no detailed info re transport etc for people who use it. Glaswegians will be paying for this and yet not benefitting in any tangible way? I don’t believe it will make any difference to climate change ;(

ssd · 14/10/2021 20:08

I dont think it will either

OP posts:
MrsAmaretto · 14/10/2021 22:47

Think the trains won’t be running cause the unions are on strike for the duration 🤷‍♀️

ssd · 14/10/2021 22:49

Great

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 15/10/2021 08:56

Just in case things weren't quite farcical enough bin workers are also planning to strike during COP26. So 10s of thousands of visitors from all over the world, including most heads of state, will be met with a city at a standstill because no-one can travel anywhere (by road or train apparently) with rubbish piling up in the streets, and Scottish government minister-led protests too. It should have been such a great opportunity to showcase Glasgow and Scotland as a whole - what a waste.

ssd · 15/10/2021 11:33

Christ missing a trick here, maybe i should be striking too

Though i doubt anyone would notice till tea time
