A decent Scottish breakfast in Edinburgh

Hello, soft southern English person here.

I'm visiting Edinburgh in November (Airbnb) for a few days staying near the Castle in Grassmarket. I'm looking for a proper caff that serves a nice Scottish breakfast. I've looked on Google and Tripadvisor but all the "best" ones are expensive or look too poncy or too English.

Any recommendations?

I’m not a local, The Whiski Bar on the Royal Mile does really nice food.

FatAnkles · 19/09/2021 11:27

Thanks.

Anyone else?

The City Cafe used to do a cracking breakfast but I've not been there for years so don't know if it's gone full hipster and messed with it.

StarryStarrySocks · 19/09/2021 11:36

Loudon's. There's one off the Royal Mile and one in Fountainbridge.

StarryStarrySocks · 19/09/2021 11:42

To add, Loudon's ticks the good breakfast box but it's not a traditional caff. I can't think of anywhere like that.

I'll check out London's, thank you!

Oh the place opposite the new Johnny Walker place, starts with an H and these a statue of OurWillie outside it, I remembered Huxleys! Awesome breakfast there!
Basalt right at the very opposite end of the main shopping street to the Balmoral hotel ( about 10min walk ). Well worth it.

I would second the City Cafe suggestion. It will only be a short walk from where you are staying.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/09/2021 12:31

randomly went to Indigo Yard for breakfast last week and it was beaut. Heaters above every table outside too

I do not recommend the City Cafe, having been there yesterday.. pancakes were not freshly made, the waffle ‘stack’ consisted of again, not freshly made, 1.5 waffles, cut into halves!

However, I would highly recommend Em’s kitchen, just off royal mile in St Mary’s Street! Incredible, freshly made, generous breakfast! Lovely pink exterior so you can’t miss it 😍😍

I was going to suggest Edinburgh Larder but they're serving Cumberland sausage not square sausage! www.edinburghlarder.co.uk/edinburgh-larder-cafe/
Whiski Bar on the Royal Mile should be ok www.whiskibar.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/WHISKI-BREAKFAST-A4-22nd-June-2021.pdf
Or MUMS www.monstermashcafe.co.uk/#anchor-u1831

titsintiers · 22/09/2021 07:31

Loudons is amazing, you can book there too.

KittenKong · 22/09/2021 07:37

Mmmmmm
Proper porridge
Square sausage
Back bacon
Tattie scones
Poached egg
Tomatoes (tinned)

No beans/hash browns - that’s just wrong.

CallMeRisley · 22/09/2021 07:37

@ElephantOfRisk

The elephant house on the bridge up the road?

vomcomvomcom · 22/09/2021 18:22

I went to Troy Cafe with my family for breakfast, it was the best meal we had during our whole time in Edinburgh - It’s on Dalry Road

StarryStarrySocks · 22/09/2021 18:37

@Angliski

The elephant house on the bridge up the road?
It's currently closed - there was a fire in the building next door a few weeks ago.
