New thread, a very appropriate title I feel ...

See those numbers you report @dancemom, is there anyway of reporting the number of people in hospital vaccinated or not, and their age and whether they are cev? The figures don't really mean anything to me without a bit more interpretation. Though i haven't a clue how to find that.

Scottishskifun · 02/09/2021 17:35

There isn't a breakdown to that level of vax/not or cev.

Travelling tabby has some useful age breakdowns in general.

ssd · 02/09/2021 20:30

Thats a shame, i think it would make more sense if it was broken down more.

sartorius · 02/09/2021 20:39

@ssd public health England make the nhs differentiate between in hospital for treatment for COVID and in hospital for something else (broken leg) and happen to test positive.
Last time they published the breakdown it was 23% of hospital numbers were in hospital for another reason.
I'm sure Scotland will be pretty similar.

That's about as much of a breakdown we ever get though and that's England , Scotland doesn't even do thatConfused

Late to the party and occasional lurker/non contributor on the tiers threads but I’ve had to comment to congratulate @dancemom on a stupendous threat title. This song reminds me of being terrified of nuclear war aged 7 years old and watching the ultravox video on repeat our shiny new VCR contraption!

dancemom · 02/09/2021 21:47

Thanks @GrandPrismatic but it was suggested by @titsintiers, I ran low on tier puns several threads ago

I seriously need Covid to disappear just because there are only so many takes on the word tier 😆

I'm currently waiting for test results. Has been over 24 which I think is the longest I've ever waited!

Popitdontstopit · 03/09/2021 11:05

Sorry, 24 hours

ssd · 03/09/2021 11:51

Shouldn't be much more than 24 hours

Popitdontstopit · 03/09/2021 12:08

Hmm, it's not far over but I'm wondering how long I need to wait - we got a card with a number to phone if you didn't hear after x period of time - but I don't remember how long he said to wait! They've always been quick before so I didn't really register it.

LoopyGremlin · 03/09/2021 13:07

Someone I know waited 50 hours for results this week. Maybe sheer volume to tests to process?

Popitdontstopit · 03/09/2021 13:29

Thank you. I did phone and was told couldn't chase for 72 hours.

dancemom · 03/09/2021 15:01

Well JCVI have said no significant benefit for 12-15 year olds to have the vaccination!

No doubt NS will be annoyed at the one and follow it up with a letter from clinicians.... 🙄

Good on the JCVI for resisting the immense (and pretty unprecedented) political pressure from both Scottish and UK ministers, and making an evidence based decision based on the risk/benefit to the children concerned.
Scottishskifun · 03/09/2021 15:44

Yep!
Not sure how SG can argue with it given they have examined the risks, data and evidence! Will await Devi and NS to no doubt come out with something about it!

WouldBeGood · 03/09/2021 15:47

I’m actually very impressed with them for holding firm. Makes me believe that’s truly the right approach for now.

OnceUponAWhine · 03/09/2021 15:49

I just saw that re 12-15, but methinks she will stubbornly stick to restrictions, such as masks at school until such a time they can float the idea again of that age group to be vaccinated. I think we’re in for a thoroughly depressing winter in Scotland. We will no doubt be expected to wear the fear- we’re not going to get a break from masks in shops, cafes etc. The school kids won’t either. Throw COP26 into the mix and we’ll be pulling our hair out at the unfairness of it all. I could be wrong about all, but I’m very much looking forward to the October break booked down south to escape the doom.

Covid in Scotland: Vaccination certificates still have security glitch. Rank amateurs - it's beyond embarrassing really.

TeacupDrama · 03/09/2021 16:01

there is an areticle in Times today ( might only apply to England) that they have to have parental consent to vaccinate 12-16 year olds, I am not anti vaccine have had mine ages ago but am not persuaded they are in the best interests of kids unless they are clinically vulnerable

it maybe in the best interests of adults to vaccinate teenagers but the safety margin needs to be very high if the chances of a healthy teenager dying of covid are 1 in a million (or whatever it is) the chances of dying from the vaccine have to be less, Every teenage that is vaccinate dcarries the risk of the side effect but if you don't vaccinate they may never get covid anyway about 85+% of population have not had it so I am still not sure my DD is not quite 12 but I really don't know whether to encourage or discourage her from taking it

Beyond admin cringe. I think they must still use the microfiche and tippex at ScotGov HQ.
Scottishskifun · 03/09/2021 16:10

@teacupdrama I think they will sit and watch the risk/benefits of it coming out of countries which are vaccinating teens such as Israel and the US before re-examining it.

That's what they did with vaccinating pregnant women.
It will be a while yet and given they have found long covid levels are lower then first thought in under 16s it is best to wait a while.
I do believe the vaccine is safe and the complications are very rare but just hyperbole by the number that they are being done in so lots of focus compared to other vaccines. My DS for instance had side effects from his MMR.

TeacupDrama · 03/09/2021 16:43

@scottishskifun I know everything has side effects but it's the weighing up of side effects against benefits it is very obvious in the over 50's that benefits outwiegh risks and quite obvious in the over 30's it is a finer balance in the under 30's and possibly swinging the other way in the under 20's
if you are vaccinating teenagers principally for the benefit of older adults the margin of safety needs to be greater than if the benefit of vaccnation was principally for the teenager themselves hence the decision by the committee that it overall no benefit to teenagers in taking the vaccine because either the risks of side effects from the vaccine are worse than the risks of covid or the risk of side effects from the vaccine is equal to risk from covid neither or which are a good case for vaccination
The only case for vaccinating teenagers is that the risks from the vaccination are lower than the risks from covid which they may or may not get and as yet this does not appear to be the proven case

mapleleavesreturn · 03/09/2021 17:01

Good decision for now by JCVI - added to that, it's too late now for vaccinating older kids to make a significant impact in winter covid cases or school disruption, given the 2 jag time lag and speed to roll out we'd be at Christmas even if approved now.

Boosters of individuals more at risk from covid is a better looking strategy at this stage.
