Thanks @dancemom
How are you and DD feeling now?

dancemom · 17/10/2021 15:16

Not too bad @sartorius thanks for asking. Both still very tired, I'm still coughing and dd still has breathless spells. Definitely not shrugged it off as easily as i thought we would.

@dancemom

Not too bad *@sartorius* thanks for asking. Both still very tired, I'm still coughing and dd still has breathless spells. Definitely not shrugged it off as easily as i thought we would.
Even mild cases can take it out of you especially the fatigue side of things it took DH 4 weeks to get back to running from most days prior and he had a mild case.

Listen to your bodies and don't push it the more you try the worse it gets.
Once DD is feeling a bit better find a gentle yoga class for her like a beginners or breathing class. It has really helped improve my breathlessness first 2 months before starting yoga therapy I couldn't speak for more then 5 mins.

Also recommend taking magnesium, vit b complexes for fatigue and high strength vit D and a vit C supplement. Many covid people have been found to be low in vit D and C afterwards

This thread on twitter about why the UK has much higher rates that other countries is quite an interesting take. I've highlighted the post splitting out England and Scotland because I thought the charts here are interesting - our elderly rates of infection were much higher than England and, perhaps because of this, our hospitalisation and death rates are also considerably higher. Both are relatively poor compared to the other countries selected (although England's deaths aren't that much higher). I don't know why this would be quite honestly, as there wasn't that much difference in vaccination uptake (ours was slightly slower to get going if anything, so waning would be less of an issue), unless it's the lack of natural immunity thing, or perhaps just poorer general health up here.

His conclusion to the thread is that while mask mandates and restrictions on gatherings etc. might be part of the issue, he thinks the real problem swamping all these things is that the early success of our vaccine programme relative to Europe means we now have earlier waning, and the booster programme isn't going fast enough. One of the charts seems to confirm that Scotland's vaccination of children is progressing much quicker than England (people will have their own opinions on whether this is a good thing or not), but what really matters in terms of reducing COVID impact is the booster roll out to the vulnerable, and while I've seen data from England (about 200k boosters a day I think) I'm not sure Scotland is releasing that data.

Obviously there's debate to be had about whether it's 'worth it' to continue to use restrictions to try and control spread, but I think it's useful to inform that debate. My suspicion is that he's broadly right in that vaccine waning in the vulnerable is driving hospitalisations, and if we can get the booster programme going that will be the most effective way to reduce NHS pressure over the winter. There's no evidence that younger people are driving hospitalisation, so I think the focus on coercing the young to get vaccinated is misguided as well as immoral (and tends to just increase vaccine hesitancy anyway). Other restrictions like masks or distancing have minimal impact on hospitalisations, and I think it's time now to drop them.

Thanks @dancemom
Intensive care numbers come down by 20 in last 10 days.
That's really positive news

titsintiers · 18/10/2021 17:46

I read that Twitter thread too @Y0uCann0tBeSer10us seemed sensible to me. I suppose all will be revealed over the next few months once boosters given.

LoopyGremlin · 19/10/2021 11:16

So, masks are staying for secondary schools. Not the Jews I was hoping for.

LoopyGremlin · 19/10/2021 11:16

News!

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 11:22

I'm guessing that is an "incentive" for people to get 12-15 year olds jagged?

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 19/10/2021 11:23

Sorry @LoopyGremlin but that made me laugh Grin

I don't have secondary-aged kids so this doesn't put me up nor down on a personal level, but I know lots of people will not be impressed.

I have to say though, I look at England's rising numbers and just think what the fuck are they doing?

Just pretending Covid is over is clearly not working. We've got one of the highest case rates in the world. And even if you're (the generic you) not overly concerned about Covid on its own, you have to be concerned about what this means for the health service over the next six months. The pressure on hospitals is going to become immense, and people will increasingly die of Covid and other things that should be treatable.

I'm actually quite frightened of this government's laissez faire attitude to human lives.

Mistressiggi · 19/10/2021 11:24

ConfusedGrin
Where did you hear that? Have googled and the article I read was a bit confusing as it mentioned communal areas.

Mistressiggi · 19/10/2021 11:25

(There wouldn't be any immediate change post holiday as would need some time for councils and schools to process the changes)

LoopyGremlin · 19/10/2021 11:25

It is on BBC news website. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-58966726

Mistressiggi · 19/10/2021 11:27

Great thanks, much clearer than the one I read!

LoopyGremlin · 19/10/2021 11:32

No problem @Mistressiggi

Scottishskifun · 19/10/2021 12:12

@BlameItOnTheBlackStar it's still not reached the rates that Scotland did early Sept for England.

Case rates currently in England are 423 per 100,000 for last week case rates for Scotland 6th of September were 824 per 100,000...... So just under half the level we reached!

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 19/10/2021 12:20

I know, and I do think they are lagging behind us in this wave, so hopefully numbers will peak soon. But I like the fact that the SG are still trying to do something rather than just vaguely waving a tired hand at the masses and turning their backs. Even if it's not the measures that people would like to see (which is mostly none if Scotsnet is representative of RL).
