New thread, a very appropriate title I feel ...

But people can have covid more than once? I know a few who have had it twice and both times have been recent.

sartorius · 06/09/2021 15:58

I think they also recently found that the incidence of long covid in children was a lot lower than had initially been thought

It was the kings college/Zoe app study @rookiemere
Found only 1.4% of children with symptomatic COVID had symptoms longer than 8 weeks.

ElephantOfRisk · 06/09/2021 15:59

Don't quote me, but i remember reading somewhere at some point that it's people they count, not incidences of positives. So someone having tested positive twice should only count once. Particularly if the tests have been fairly close. Is it not the case that you can test positive for ages after having it? DH gets lots of patients to take home that are positive but they were also positive when they were admitted weeks previously.

OhWhatsTheDifference · 06/09/2021 16:29

I wonder how long that proivso lasts? I know someone who had it maybe 14 months ago, then again last week. Surely they'd be counted twice?

ssd · 06/09/2021 16:34

Nah they only get counted once

SempreSuiGeneris · 06/09/2021 16:34

It's a backlog / under reporting last Monday issue. If you look at the "by specimen date" figs on coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/cases numbers are steady with a slight downward trend.

WouldBeGood · 06/09/2021 16:35

With so many positives the proportion of those in hospital is tiny. And many of those will have incidental Covid as opposed to being treated for it.

OhWhatsTheDifference · 06/09/2021 16:37

@ssd

Nah they only get counted once
Ever!? That's so weird. In that case, I've only ever had tonsilitis once. One cold. One sickness bug etc Grin
ssd · 06/09/2021 16:39

I know, i was told that by an nhs worker yesterday

ssd · 06/09/2021 16:40

They'll need to start reporting case numbers of those without covid soon....

ssd · 06/09/2021 16:40

Round here its nuts

Scottishskifun · 06/09/2021 16:53

@StarryEyeSurprise

It depends on how recent you can get relapses with long covid and still test positive a long time after. It's why they say not to test at least 90 days after infection. My long covid symptoms could very much seem like covid recurrent fevers, headaches periods of breathlessness etc. I wasn't reinfected just having relapse/symptoms.

Generally the few who have had covid twice have a gap of 8-9 months minimum and it's still pretty unusual to get it twice but possible due to variants. Although if you've had alpha your less likely to get delta, if you've had delta its unusual but if you had the first strain then greater chance although still low (going by the research papers on it)

OhWhatsTheDifference · 06/09/2021 16:57

We got one of those pointless 'warn and inform' letters today saying 'an individual' with links to the school has tested positive.

That I personally know of, it's more like a dozen people. And that's only from the classes my two kids are in. So over the whole school...who knows?!

ssd · 06/09/2021 16:57

How are you doing now @Scottishskifun

Pootle40 · 06/09/2021 17:17

@ElephantOfRisk

I'll say again. We don't know that the people in hospital WITH covid are being treated BECAUSE of covid. Higher incidence in the community with inevitably mean that people admitted to hospital/ICU for ANY REASON but test positive will be included in the stats.
You said it just before I was about to! There is no panic because I genuinely think this is high incidence of 'positive cases' while in for an appendectomy (not sure why I always pick that!) If all those people were in hospital / ICU because of serious ill health due to Covid we would know about it and Sturgeon would be on TV constantly !
Scottishskifun · 06/09/2021 17:40

@ssd

How are you doing now *@Scottishskifun*
I'm doing a lot better now thank you since the daily fevers are gone! I'm still a way off being a "normal" mid 30s and have to pace everything. Will end up with headaches, fever and fatigue if I over do it of 2 hours out without proper resting but the recovery time is much shorter of half a day compared to 3-5! I'm back at work properly now after 4 months although I do a desk job so it's easier in body demand!

Yoga therapy is helping my lung damage still a long way to go back to no burning sensation or get back to my lung capacity but been warned that may never get back to the level it was. I've given up on any hope of NHS support and do everything privately.

It is a very bizarre illness I am thankful though that my friends and family are double jabbed so unlikely to end up in the same situation!

I am certain I had Covid in March 2020 (long before tests)

I had long COVID following a bout of intense chest pressure, pain and heat. It actually felt like I had an elephant sitting on my chest or my bra being several sizes too tight. It was difficult to walk after this episode for a while and I got out of breath very quickly.

After 12 months, I would just get an odd twinge in my chest when I was exerting myself and now I am totally symptom free. I hope you recover speedily and fully.

ResilienceWanker · 06/09/2021 17:58

@StarryEyeSurprise

Yes, it is possible, but it is rare at the moment - and yes, at the moment it is each "person" and not "infection" that is counted - so reinfections aren't currently included in the figures. However, PHE is recording the possible reinfections (maybe PHS is too, but I only know where the data is for PHE). The most recent data up to August here (p17) shows that of 5.2 million first infections there were 35,000 odd possible reinfections (i.e. tested positive again after 90 days - though that could still be the first infection never having gone away), of which 1325 were probable (eg. second infection was sequenced as delta and that wasn't around at the time they had their first infection) and 137 confirmed reinfections (i.e. both infections were sequenced and they were both different variants).

So that's much less than 1% of the amount of all first infections at the moment - so its not a huge issue at the moment. They may start counting reinfections at some point, but it's not really affecting the numbers at the moment, and there's not a huge iceberg of unrecorded second infections about to hit us...

Scottishskifun · 06/09/2021 18:21

@aurea yep definitely sounds exactly the same chest symptoms! My breathlessness has mostly gone day to day just left with the burning if I do deep breathing but otherwise ok. I still struggle with a mask after a certain time period as well.

Glad you have recovered it gives me hope!

sartorius · 06/09/2021 18:22

I Read several months ago (somewhere sorry can't remember!) that it would only be counted as 2nd infection if there had been a negative test in between.
Some people can keep shedding dead virus cells for months which can be picked up by very sensitive Pcr tests.
The scientists may of course have changed their thinking on this now

ssd · 06/09/2021 18:28

Im so glad to read you are doing better @Scottishskifun ,although it still sounds hard going for you, I'm glad you were able to find some treatments that helped.

OhWhatsTheDifference · 07/09/2021 10:42

What's the crack today guys? Who's waiting for results (us!) or got colds or tonsillitis or other old-fashioned illnesses? I should be working but am bored, and also trying to entertain a 9 year old with the attention span of an ant.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 07/09/2021 10:58

Youngest one developed a fever overnight (bright as a button now, just a little hot) so we're having a family trip to the testing centre later. Great fun!

mibbelucieachwell · 07/09/2021 11:06

Awww. A family trip to the testing centre .....

OhWhatsTheDifference · 07/09/2021 11:24

Yep we'll be having one tomorrow as DD just got a positive test back...
