Torn between Edinburgh and Glasgow

Hello

I currently live in Glasgow, I have previously lived in Edinburgh for 3 years. I am not from either and it is a very similar distance home from both.

I have basically parallel promotional job offers in both cities. The jobs are identical albeit different sites which bring their own differences.

I’m very torn.

I love glasgow, the city centre, the music scene and the parks. The people I find to be absolutely lovely. However, Glasgow is very big and sprawling and I do feel like I live on the commuter belt as such and hardly see the city centre even though I live in a fairly central area. I’ll also admit to not loving certain times of year and the sectarianism.

I previously lived in Edinburgh. I loved it, it was a beautiful city and I really like how close it is to the coast. I also felt it was more compact and easier to get into the city. I also found Edinburgh a nice size to walk around.I felt incredibly safe in Edinburgh even on match days etc. Despite what people say I found the people very nice and friendly. However it is very expensive to live in and if I moved there I could end up being more limited for further career progression (but that’s years away)

I know with either city I am a quick drive or train to the other. Whilst Edinburgh is more expensive, Glasgow isn’t cheap either and I know at the moment some properties are going for crazy amounts over the asking price (appreciate this is probably the same in Edinburgh). My commute in Glasgow would be 40 minutes. I would have the hassle of a new place in Edinburgh.

I really am torn, the cities are very different and great in their own way. As a single young(ish) female I do think I felt safer in Edinburgh but I only feel unsafe at certain times of year in Glasgow and in certain areas. The Edinburgh job offer would move quicker as I wouldn’t be an internal transfer (ironically).

Anyone’s ideas or thoughts are greatly appreciated

I lived and worked in Glasgow for a year after Edinburgh university and ended up back in Edinburgh.
I much prefer it to Glasgow- feels safer and somehow warmer spirited than Glasgow. This is a ling time ago though and house prices here are pretty crazy.

ImperfectTents · 29/08/2021 22:25

It rains too much in Glasgow

Poshjock · 29/08/2021 22:54

Edinburgh every day of the week for me. For pretty much same reasons you gave in the OP. I agree Glasgow people are warmer and friendlier but it not as though Edinburgh people are unfriendly -far from it. Also weather. East of Scotland is drier. Better beaches too!

Thanks everyone.

I have decided to accept Edinburgh. I’ll still have a few months left in Glasgow with pre employment checks and the notice period so will make the most of it.

@rookiemere being honest I do find Edinburgh warmer spirited too

Good choice.

dementedma · 30/08/2021 09:35

Edinburgh every time. Good choice

Both my DDs live in Edinburgh and love it. I’m 50 miles north, but visit often, as it’s a fab city. I haven’t felt the slightest desire to visit Glasgow in forty years!

Let's hope that continues.

Edinburgh. No brainer. It's got the castle 😂

Omg such hatred on here for Glasgow Shock
I came to Glasgow 33 years ago for university, loved it and stayed. I had part time summer jobs in Edinburgh, yes it is beautiful and lovely but "nice on a shortbread tin" to paraphrase Billy Connolly. But it IS too rainy in Glasgow. And I slightly miss not having the sea very close.

HoldingTheDoor · 30/08/2021 20:18

It might rain more here but it's bloody cold in Edinburgh. Many times I've got on the train and it's been mild or a little chilly in Glasgow but bitter cold in the East. Of course it gets cold here too but not generally in the bone chilling way it does in Edinburgh.

museumum · 30/08/2021 20:21

I prefer the cold in edinburgh to the damp in glasgow. But mostly I like edinburgh best for living in due to its small size. We’re out in the burbs but still so close to the centre (20min cycle) and beach.

Ladylunchalot · 30/08/2021 22:10

Glasgow all the way, much friendlier and so many different vibrant areas. Yes it's drizzly but I'd rather that than the constant bitter east wind in Edinburgh - I was always freezing when I worked there or stayed with my sister when she lived there.

MauveMavis · 01/09/2021 13:36

Good choice. I"m from Edinburgh. Have lived in both but in the end London won!

aquamarine1 · 02/09/2021 11:18

Good choice. We settled in Glasgow and now the kids are in primary school so we feel we can't move but Glasgow has gone downhill big time in the last decade. Awful to see.

Downsize2021 · 03/09/2021 19:47

I've been in Edinburgh for years but my ex was Glasgow and spent many happy days there. I cant see myself swapping cities now but both are wonderful places to be in. I've never agreed with the idea that Glasgow is much friendlier but then I'm chatty and tend to chat away to anyone so maybe I just force strangers to talk to me regardless of where I am.
