Bands in exams

Can anyone help me understand the bands system? So results from A to C are split into band 1 and band 2? Why is it not put on their exam certificates? I read that schools are informed and they can share the band with the student. Do they get any evidence of their band? A letter or something? Or is it just shared verbally? I also read that some universities (in England I think) ask that grades are a particular band. That makes me assume they are given some evidence of it?

Thanks for any help.

I dont think my dd was told her band and we didn't ask

As far as I am aware Universities get confirmation of results from either the school or SQA and it includes bands.

Ds asked at a virtual uni open day a couple of weeks ago, they said when they get results confirmed it includes bands, but for his uni /course they make offers before they get results confirmed so bands for him wont matter. I expect they will matter for things like med, vet etc.

Ds was given his Highers bands this year when they were told their provisional results in june

I have only heard of English unis asking for Bands for AH not Highers or National 5s. Course DD was interested in at LSE asked for A1 in AH maths. DD didn't apply as she thought it unlikely she could get an A1. I presume unis get full info on bands from Ucas so they can tell between near misses and way off. A few of DDs friends applied to English unis but offers were As not A1s.

I quite like just an A on a certificate. My DSes wouldn't have cared but my DD would have felt the pressure to get the A1s. Instead she naturally got A1s in subjects she had an aptitude for without the stress.

The schools have the bands but DC/you would have to ask. A spreadsheet is available showing what scores fall into what bands and the proportion of students in each band I think. Not sure when it is published.
