Coming up to Edinburgh in the summer and then onto near St Andrews. Does anyone know of a good place to stop off/visit in between the two places?
TIA

It's only about an hour and a half away, do you mean stop for a break or an overnight stop as part of a tour?

Aberdour
East Neuk of Fife villages. Elie, anstruther, Pittenweem, Crail

Falkland Palace or Loch Leven (loch leven larder for a lunch stop)

Thanks everyone.
A stop to visit somewhere on the way as we can’t get into out accommodation until 5.

Scottish deer centre, deep sea world, st Andrew's aquarium; st Andrew's botanical gardens who are building an adventure playground which I think may be open.

I would come via the coastal route up into the East Neuk. Lots of lovely fishing villages and beaches to visit. If you want to do a visit Falkland Palace is lovely and the village is pretty too. There are actually loads of places you could visit! It depends what sort of things you like and the ages of the people involved.

Aberdour silver sands beach.
Carnie fruit farm.
Adventure golf at Fife leisure Park.
Craigtoun Country Park (in St Andrews itself)

Not deep sea world, its over priced and really quite run down.

The marina in South Queensferry is nice for something to eat and a wander, Down the Hatch or Scott's Bistro.

Fife zoo.
Lochore Country meadows.

Anstruther

If its a nice day a lovely long flat beach at Elie to walk/run to let off some steam after being in the car, call for fish and chips at Anstruther or potter around St Andrews town and beach and maybe a bit more going on.

Thanks everyone, loads of ideas to look into. I’m very familiar with St Andrews (went to uni there), but realised I’d not really explored in between there and Edinburgh. Excited to hear about the playground in the Botanical garden.

Falkland Palace is great. Elie is lovely but heaving in summer. The Secret Bunker is interesting. It depends what sort of thing you are into, really.

Buckleyourseatbelt · 22/07/2021 08:27

I went to a ‘rave’ at the secret bunker in the late 90s when I was at uni! Maybe I should revisit…

Ohdeariedear · 22/07/2021 08:34

Fifer here. Anywhere on the coast will be heaving, you won’t get near Aberdour silver sands or many of the other beaches and the drive up the coast will be tortuous! The East Neuk is easy to get to from St Andrews when you are staying there so go from there later in the week.

Id go inland - go up the M90 to Kinross for a walk round a bit of the Loch side trail, see if you can book the boat to go to Mary Queen of Scots’ prison island, great options for lunch. Or alternatively, go further and do Dundee for the day. V&A, Discovery, the McManus galleries.

dementedma · 22/07/2021 08:38

I agree with ohdeariedear. East Neuk is great but will be rammed in good weather. All of his/her suggestions good. Would add in Tentsnuir Nature Reserve too. Very underused, beaches are huge and not too busy, great woodland walks and a play area
