Moving to glasgow - recommendations needed

I’m living somewhere I really don’t like at the moment elsewhere in Scotland, plus my health is deteriorating and so I’m struggling to manage where I am and this is only likely to become worse.

I Have family and friends in glasgow but I’m having trouble finding accommodation in the areas they are in.

I’m on benefits through ill health and so it would most likely need to be housing association, possibly private renting at a stretch but it’s hard to find private places that take on tenants on benefits and also I may need adaptations present or made in the mid term future.

Where I’m stuck is I don’t know glasgow as I used to so when I’m looking on the housing lists I don’t know if the areas I’m looking at are ok places to live.

I’m just not wanting to inadvertently end up somewhere unsafe or where newcomers are less welcome.

I’m also dealing with anti social noisy neighbours and want to avoid that possibility if I can at all with a new place.

It also needs to be somewhere with good transport links, good local infrastructure and hopefully a decent public pool nearby as that’s the only way I can safely exercise these days.

I hope not to drip feed too much but as the thread progresses I’m sure people will have questions and a fuller picture will emerge of what I’m looking for.

I have faith you guys will be able to help me narrow down where to aim for

I don't know Glasgow well so can't really help with that. Maybe have a look on a map of where the pools are and take it from there?

As for noisy neighbours, i;m afraid you can get that anywhere and there is no controlling as even if the current ones are fine, those can change pretty quickly. I think in theory being in rented is easier as you can report issues to LA/HA/Landlords. In bought housing it's more difficult to deal with when they own the property.

As a mature student at Glasgow Uni, my quite proper SIL bought a cheap little house in Coatbridge near the timecapsule. I think there is a mix of housing types there and you also have access to the train station to get into Glasgow. She liked it there and never had any bother/some nice neighbours. I would think there would be LA housing there as well as private rent.

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 14:34

Yea I can see where pools are but would like to know if they’re nice pools

This is the problem with the current annoying neighbours, they own so there’s not much I can do about it

I’ll look at Coatbridge thanks

Are you currently living in a HA home?
If so, don't give it up, apply for a move to an area you want, (we can help you find one that might suit), or see if you can swap.

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 15:00

Yes currently in an ha property. A swap wouldn’t work as I’m going to need some overlap due to the health issues. Not simply a case of leave this one and into next.

Who’s we?

Not giving this place up until I have a new one. I know not to do that.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/07/2021 16:35

We as in the other posters on Scotsnet!
You're right not to give up your house.

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 16:58

Ah ok re we I misunderstood

Yes I need help to find the right area, so posting on scotsnet so you can keep me right

Of course if it was purely personal choice it’d be west end city centre...but beggars can’t be choosers!

So somewhere close to or with good transport links to city centre, fairly cosmopolitan, nice neighbours, good local shops and facilities

I also need (and I’ve posted another thread on this) good or at least not awful mh services

Where I stay just now they’re awful!

OP posts:
CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 16:58

Would it help if I posted potential areas where there are currently HA properties that might suit?

OP posts:
IHaveBrilloHair · 08/07/2021 17:06

I'd love the West end too!

Do you need hospital treatment frequently? If so, you might want to consider areas where the better hospital is.

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 17:12

Not hospital treatment generally, community healthcare and support yes and potentially carers in the next 5/10 years

OP posts:
CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 17:13

That’s another reason why I’m wanting to move now, before it gets to a point where it’s really difficult to do so

heidbuttsupper · 08/07/2021 17:16

If you post lists of HA's @CrazyNomad I can help you

Brekke · 08/07/2021 17:18

I used to live in Dennistoun and that might suit, it's an easy train/bus into the centre, there's places to eat out and local shops. There is a pool but I didn't go so couldn't say either way. It's not that far from a hospital either.

shouldistop · 08/07/2021 17:23

Landlords are no longer allowed to reject tenants because they're on benefits.

Sootess · 08/07/2021 17:35

@CrazyNomad did you say MH services?

I'm in the NHS in Edinburgh not Glasgow but unfortunately community MH services are grossly understaffed with long waiting lists in most areas of Scotland.
Here it's pretty much crisis management and discharge person back to GP care once immediate crisis is over. Ongoing support is woefully inadequate.
I would imagine Glasgow is fairly similar but happy to be corrected if someone from Glasgow knows otherwise.

Sorry, just don't want you assuming good support available in cities when it often isn't.

Littleredbrickmammy · 08/07/2021 17:44

Some one mentioned Coatbridge to you - I was brought up in Coatbridge (and my parents are still living there) and I wouldn’t say it was cosmopolitan. For local shops there is the retail centre by Tesco with Tk maxx, Matalan and m&s food but the actual Main Street is grim. There’s lots of wee shopping precincts dotted about different areas with butchers, spars, bakers and bookies. It’s reasonably friendly with pretty good rail links. But the bus links aren’t great.

prettybird · 08/07/2021 18:21

Southside Housing Association is currently going a lot of building. No idea of how you get on to their lists - but Shawlands/Pollokshields are good areas with excellent local infrastructure to get around the city (either subway if you're at the Pollokshields end , local railway or bus).

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 18:54

It would likely be gha, which I think is the main one and encompasses several of the smaller ones in the listings

Dennistoun - noted. Not familiar with that area

@shouldistop yea there’s the law and then there’s real life

Sootess - it’s a bit more complicated. Would you be happy for me to pm you? I’m not assuming city = good mh services more wanting away from really awful mh services here

Yea I know Coatbridge a wee bit and it’s nice enough but I think I need somewhere more central to be honest especially as I don’t drive at the moment

OP posts:
IHaveBrilloHair · 08/07/2021 18:55

Coatbridge is too far out.

I'm interested in Govan, as its where my hospital is, but anywhere in the radius is OK for me.
A friend lives in Knightswood and likes it and she owns.
In all honesty, if it wasn't for needing QEUH, there's nowhere I wouldn't look at so long as it was close to town.
I love my Dd's flat in Springburn, which has a terrible reputation, but its so safe at the bit where they stay, and with no young kids or schools to worry about, I'd live there, ditto Sighthill right by it.
The hospital is The Royal Infirmary though and I'm not going there!

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 18:56

@prettybird I’ve heard good things about shawlands and pollockshields but I wasn’t sure because the people saying so hadn’t lived there for decades so it could have changed

OP posts:
CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 18:59

@IHaveBrilloHair

Yea I wouldn’t mind Govan supposed to be nice there now, I’ve heard good things about knightswood too what part of springburn? Not an area I’m familiar with I’m afraid, in the back of my mind I have something saying transport not great there?

Aye the royal is not a good hospital but then I’ve heard some horror stories about the QEUH too!

prettybird · 08/07/2021 19:00

I live in Pollokshields now and love it Smile. If you're on FB, you could ask to join the "I love Pollokshields" and "Strathbungo & Shawlands Community Group" Facebook groups.

StarryEyeSurprise · 08/07/2021 19:01

You want the Queen's Cross housing area. Walkable to city centre and West End. Also subway for easy access to further afield. Look around the top of Maryhill Road. You can walk to the Botanics in 10/ 15 minutes. Good luck.

prettybird · 08/07/2021 19:01

A lot of GHA building also going on around Shawlands. Smile

StarryEyeSurprise · 08/07/2021 19:01

*Queen's Cross housing association

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 19:03

Is drumchapel still less than ideal?

I’m going off the current available properties in this post

Thoughts please on:

Broomhill
Scotstoun
Acre
Blairdardie ?
