Moving to glasgow - recommendations needed

I’m living somewhere I really don’t like at the moment elsewhere in Scotland, plus my health is deteriorating and so I’m struggling to manage where I am and this is only likely to become worse.

I Have family and friends in glasgow but I’m having trouble finding accommodation in the areas they are in.

I’m on benefits through ill health and so it would most likely need to be housing association, possibly private renting at a stretch but it’s hard to find private places that take on tenants on benefits and also I may need adaptations present or made in the mid term future.

Where I’m stuck is I don’t know glasgow as I used to so when I’m looking on the housing lists I don’t know if the areas I’m looking at are ok places to live.

I’m just not wanting to inadvertently end up somewhere unsafe or where newcomers are less welcome.

I’m also dealing with anti social noisy neighbours and want to avoid that possibility if I can at all with a new place.

It also needs to be somewhere with good transport links, good local infrastructure and hopefully a decent public pool nearby as that’s the only way I can safely exercise these days.

I hope not to drip feed too much but as the thread progresses I’m sure people will have questions and a fuller picture will emerge of what I’m looking for.

I have faith you guys will be able to help me narrow down where to aim for

I think I’ll maybe need help with how and who to make application to because until this post I thought gha covered the lot even though not all the properties are theirs.

How many HA’s are there? I would have thought council would make it so you’d only need to do one application to cover the whole city

I’ve been waiting on doing an application as I’m awaiting an assessment by occupational therapist (it’s been postponed twice so far) to assess my needs. I know this can affect the application. But I’m not really sure how it all works

There's horror stories about all Hospitals, I've been in them all over the last 12 years.
As an inpatient if needed now though, it really is The Royal Infirmary or QEUH.
One has private rooms, is clean, has decent and logical parking, free TV s and WI-FI.
The other doesn't.
It really is important to me as I have a chronic illness/disability.

Try www.housingoptionsscotland.org.uk

shouldistop · 08/07/2021 20:00

I'd say a lot of broomhill, scotstoun and blairdardie are ok - I don't know about individual streets though.

I don't think I'd personally bother with drumchapel or acre - sorry if anyone finds that offensive.

Imicola · 08/07/2021 20:02

Broomhill and scotstoun are both nice areas, as are shawlands, pollokshields. The latter two are probably more cosmopolitan, followed by broomhill, scotstoun slightly further out. Knightswood is also mostly good, but a bit further out. Scotstoun leisure centre (not too far from knightswood or broomhill also) has a pool, but currently closed i believe. It was due to be refurbished last year, but im not sure if that work has ever been started. Not sure on mh services, but these areas are all close to QEUH which i found excellent when I needed it.

shouldistop · 08/07/2021 20:02

@CrazyNomad if you have trouble with a landlord not accepting you and it's discriminatory then Glasgow city council have a department specifically set up to help tenants in the private rented sector. Might be worth contacting them.

Imicola · 08/07/2021 20:04

And I'd probably avoid drumchapel personally. Don't know the other areas.

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 20:22

@IHaveBrilloHair I know but these have been real shockers!

@Timeandtune I’ve contacted them a few times but they haven’t got back to me yet

Individual streets at the moment gha has vacancies on

Broomhill drive broomhill
Kingsway court scotstoun
Great western road blairdardie

Yea I was thinking drumchapel was still an avoid really, not familiar with acre at all.

OP posts:
shouldistop · 08/07/2021 20:23

I would avoid kingsway court.

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 20:24

@shouldistop again it’s a case of living in the real world, I could complain to council and a landlord could even be made to accept me IF I could prove they were being discriminatory which is incredibly hard anyway. I’d then be at the mercy of an unwilling landlord! I don’t need that stress nobody does.

OP posts:
CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 20:25

Thanks for tip on kingsway court though.

OP posts:
shouldistop · 08/07/2021 20:25

Its just awful, what was the point in the court ruling at all. Complete lip service!
Social housing is prob

shouldistop · 08/07/2021 20:26

Probably a better bet anyway as more secure and affordable. Just a shame there isn't enough of it! *

shouldistop · 08/07/2021 20:27

I'd imagine public transport would be brilliant on great western road.

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 20:34

It is awful what landlords get away with and I’m thinking same in terms of security and long term affordability too. I’m hoping next move will be last one if I’m honest. That’s why I’m wanting to make sure I find somewhere I can manage as independently as possible for as long as possible.

I think you’re probably right about transport on great western road too.

I might look into motability at some point as the reason I’m not driving at the moment is due mainly to a weakness in one area which can apparently be countered by certain adaptations, I need to look into it more.

Have you completed the Housing Options Scotland application form? They should contact you within 4 weeks

Timeandtune · 08/07/2021 20:57

homesforgood.org.uk/ Another good option for you.

Arewethereyet21 · 08/07/2021 21:11

Broomhill Drive is in a nice area. Close to Patrick so public transport by train, subway and bus. I’m not sure about a swimming pool - Scotstoun probably the nearest unless you want to pay for David Lloyd at Anniesland. There are still high rise flats here however so maybe check first if that wouldn’t suit you.

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 21:11

@Timeandtune I’ve contacted them 5 times since jan

Homes for good I’ll look at thanks

OP posts:
Arewethereyet21 · 08/07/2021 21:11

That should have said Partick, not Patrick.

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 21:15

I’m actually prefer the high rises especially if they’re newer/well maintained ones. Main reason - lifts! Smaller blocks of flats it’s stairs which are becoming problematic

OP posts:
CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 21:16

Partick/Patrick I figured as much!

OP posts:
CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 21:17

I like partick as an area that I’ve been to but I don’t know what it’s like to live there and don’t know anyone who does

OP posts:
IHaveBrilloHair · 08/07/2021 21:17

I'd avoid Drumchapel, I only go there to Sainsburys and it's right on GWR.
Definitely look into Motability, that's how I have a car and I love it, it gives me so much freedom.
I can be at Dd's in Springburn in 40 minutes, it takes her two hours to get to me on public transport.

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 21:24

I would love to be able to drive/own a car again would make things so much easier for me. But I have some stuff to sort first
