Moving to glasgow - recommendations needed

I’m living somewhere I really don’t like at the moment elsewhere in Scotland, plus my health is deteriorating and so I’m struggling to manage where I am and this is only likely to become worse.

I Have family and friends in glasgow but I’m having trouble finding accommodation in the areas they are in.

I’m on benefits through ill health and so it would most likely need to be housing association, possibly private renting at a stretch but it’s hard to find private places that take on tenants on benefits and also I may need adaptations present or made in the mid term future.

Where I’m stuck is I don’t know glasgow as I used to so when I’m looking on the housing lists I don’t know if the areas I’m looking at are ok places to live.

I’m just not wanting to inadvertently end up somewhere unsafe or where newcomers are less welcome.

I’m also dealing with anti social noisy neighbours and want to avoid that possibility if I can at all with a new place.

It also needs to be somewhere with good transport links, good local infrastructure and hopefully a decent public pool nearby as that’s the only way I can safely exercise these days.

I hope not to drip feed too much but as the thread progresses I’m sure people will have questions and a fuller picture will emerge of what I’m looking for.

I have faith you guys will be able to help me narrow down where to aim for

I'd assume Partick could be noisy, depending on where you stay, saying that I'd happily live there.
I love Hyndland, Dd went to school there and loved it, I think you'd need a designated parking space though if you were wanting a car.
On street parking is a pain, particularly in busy areas which they are.
Amazing takeaways though!Grin

Shawlands/Pollokshields/Pollokshaws - of these areas Pollokshaws is the only one with a decent amount of social housing. There are also no decent swimming pools nearby. You would have to travel.

The Gorbals is an area to look at. It has gone through a massive redesign and has a fab mix of social and private housing. It is close to town and a short bus ride away to Shawlands etc. It has a good leisure centre and pool. And a great theatre.

Pollok/Priesthill - a semi-periphal housing estate. Lots of social housing and private lets. Good transport links into town. Small but decent leisure centre. Good health centre. Silverburn shopping mall with restaurants and cinema.

Penilee/Hillington/Cardonald/Bellahouston -
Great parks, good leisure centre and pool, shops all along Paisley Rd West. Social housing. Great transport in to town. Not far from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Southern general).

Im Glasgow born and bred. If you need any other info just ask.

Anywhere in the west end - partick/broomhill/finneston/hyndland etc are very very difficult to find affordable housing. Massive student population bumps up the cost of private rent and social housing is hard to come by. Go over the other side of Great Western Road to Maryhill and you will find more social housing.

Daydrambeliever · 08/07/2021 21:39

Google Glasgow Club leisure centres (which is Glasgow City Council run leisure centers) and the areas where there are leisure centres, you will find lots of social housing and affordable private lets (except Kelvinhall and possible Scotstoun).

I've lived in both the West End and SS. I definitely would not recommend Coatbridge as it's a bit of a back water and well, I wouldn't live there. I lived in Shawlands and after the West End, thought it was a great place to live. We used the pool at Eastwood sometimes but there may be nearer ones?

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 21:46

There’s noisy as in hubbub and noisy as in selfish neighbours who do diy at the crack of dawn!

Hyndland I’ve heard good things about

@Daydrambeliever that’s great info thanks very much

Maryhill used to have a less positive reputation is it ok now?

I've just seen you mentioned Broomhill where I used to live. Honestly, it's a great place if you can get housing there and Broomhill Drive is lovely!

Daydrambeliever · 08/07/2021 21:52

Maryhill does have a better rep now and there are some really nice new build estates. But there are definitely some areas of deprivation.

Blueberrycreampie · 08/07/2021 21:52

@CrazyNomad

I’m actually prefer the high rises especially if they’re newer/well maintained ones. Main reason - lifts! Smaller blocks of flats it’s stairs which are becoming problematic
As far as I can remember the lifts only go to alternate floors believe it or not! Maybe someone will confirm this. Broomhill Path is a nice little are of maisonettes just off Broomhill Drive.
randomsabreuse · 08/07/2021 21:56

Bit further out but still decent transport links - Kirkintilloch and Lenzie. The main pool in Kirkie has shallower steps as well as the vertical type which might help. Lots of buses. Negative is that East Dunbartonshire falls under Glasgow Royal Infirmary catchment if that's a problem and there will be competition from people wanting the schools - but 1 bed flats not so much.

I've noticed that the council/HA properties in Hillhead are obviously better maintained on the outside than the privately owned ones - all have recent roughcasting and roof tiles and have had new fences this yet.

CrazyNomad · 08/07/2021 22:17

I must admit I thought broomhill looked nice

I think Kirkintilloch and Lenzie might be a bit far out.

Hillhead I’m not familiar with and I’ve not seen any properties come up on the gha listings but I’m now aware thanks to this thread that there are a lot of HA’s.

Am I allowed to apply to them all?

@shouldistop

Landlords are no longer allowed to reject tenants because they're on benefits.
How can they be stopped from doing that?

If they get more than one applicant for a place, they just choose one who isn't on benefits.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/07/2021 16:13

AFAIK you can apply to as many as you want.
My aim is to stay close to town, but in emergency ambulance area of QEUH.
I've actually been in Renfrew a few times recently and it seems ok but I actually have no idea.
Does anyone know much about it?
(Sorry to hijack you thread but it may be useful for you too OP)

CrazyNomad · 31/07/2021 16:29

Hoping this bump comes up on your I’m on

Situation is now much more urgent after receiving a letter from current landlord today re major maintenance works which I will not cope with happening while I am here, just not an option.

Have posted a new thread in chat but getting no responses.

Panicking a bit. Would really appreciate advice or at least a handhold/some reassurance if possible.

Nowhere open till Monday on the official side of things so looks like I’m in for a weekend of fretting! Stomach is tight!

Anybody out there? Having a rough day here

Are you currently in a housing association house or a private let?

If HA can they not decant you for the duration of the works.

It's really difficult to get social housing in Glasgow, most areas have waiting lists of years. I understand you are disabled but existing disabled tenants are unable to get suitable homes, and existing tenants are the priority.

If you have a HA home it may be best to look for a swap

CrazyNomad · 31/07/2021 21:27

Yes I’m in HA at the moment but current HA very small. They won’t have spare properties I can borrow plus tbh I would be unable to come back to this property after the work was done I wouldn’t eg be able to use the same furniture and quite honestly I want to move out and away from here anyway.

I’m open to HA, private rent, possibly shared ownership if I can afford and am eligible.

I just need out of here but I was hoping to be able to organise/find somewhere I really liked first and now I’m worried I won’t have time to.

Hey I’m sorry for jumping on here but it looks like you all have some good knowledge of areas. I’m from Dunoon and want to move away I’ve currently been looking at the airdrie/ Coatbridge area and looks quite nice. I’m initially looking for somewhere with a decent town centre with decent supermarkets a few shops, some places to go with the kids, parks and greenery and nice areas with nice schools. Plus I don’t drive so good busses and trains. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to avoid in airdrie/ Coatbridge areas? Or know if anywhere else what might be a good fit for me and my family? Thanks in advance!
