Football being shown in school

DD is thoroughly pissed off that they're going to be made to watch the Scotland match in class this afternoon. I thought it was because it was football (she's not a fan) and possibly because the boys in the class would be louder and lairier than usual (as TBF I know she has got a lot of 'big personalities' in that class). This morning she expressed another thing I hadn't thought of: 'There's no choice so it's forced nationalism, Mum.' On reflection, I think she has a point. On the other hand, it's a big event and I suspect the school thinks there will be a lot of unauthorised absences if they don't let them watch. But if they want them to have the opportunity to see the match, maybe they could send them home early so they can if they choose to - but don't make them all sit through it in school time? How are other schools dealing with it?

@MaMelon

At 14?! Yes, I’m sure they could have brought in a toy if they’d wanted.
I was trying to be sarcastic.
Twoforthree · 14/06/2021 17:17

@Toty

It’s not that schools can’t win, it’s that there didn’t appear to be any alternative for kids who didn’t want to watch it.

So? My ds had to sit through frozen once which still haunts him to this day. Not everyone is going to like every viewing of a movie/sports event shown is class. Tough really 🤷‍♀️

Fortunately they didn’t have to, so no-one has been haunted.

Babdoc · 14/06/2021 17:45

So how did it go then? Worth watching?! Grin

Why do you take such delight in their loss?
StarryEyeSurprise · 14/06/2021 17:59

@MaMelon

It’s not that schools can’t win, it’s that there didn’t appear to be any alternative for kids who didn’t want to watch it. DSs high school issued a newsletter on Friday saying the kids were going to watch the match. Brilliant for DS who eats, sleeps, breaths and plays the game - less brilliant for those who don’t. It turned out the ‘no phones’ rule was relaxed and they were able to play on them if they didn’t want to watch 90 minutes of footie, but there was nothing in the newsletter to indicate there was an alternative.

The news on the way home kept talking about it being the first time the Scottish team had qualified in a major tournament since 1998 (I think that was the year). Didn’t tge women’s team qualify for the World Cup a couple of years ago Confused

So your DSs school day is until just before 4?
itsamegladon · 14/06/2021 18:19

I remember being forced to watch the tennis in primary.
Back when there were only 4 channels and the tennis would be on two of them, lovely sunny day and we were all stuck in the hall watching the final.

So boring really put me off tennis for life

DD sat in another room today as she's not interested in football. She says they did nothing but chat. I send my DD to school to get an education not watch football, even if it is near end of term.

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 18:50

You sound a bit intense @itsjustlowhangingfruit Kids are there to build friendships and other social skills too.

Haudyourwheesht · 14/06/2021 18:50

What about the last day of term @itsjustlowhangingfruit ?

Well it was on for, what, an hour before school finished? Do you usually contact the teacher on a Monday to make sure every minute is educationally accounted for, before you decide whether to send your kids in or not?
tigger1001 · 14/06/2021 18:58

My youngest hates football with a passion but was happy it was shown in class. He chose to do his own thing instead of watching it.

Eldest football crazy. School never said if they were planning to watch it etc, so I gave him permission to come home at lunch so he could watch it. Even if they did get to watch it, due to school finishing time and the length of time travelling home he would have missed second half. Almost all the kids in his football team did the same as did a large amount of other kids. There must have been some amount of "appointments" this afternoon 😂

I was pretty gutted as although my work were allowing time off to watch it, I was on an all day course so didn't get the chance to watch, although in hindsight that maybe was a good thing!

I also remember getting to finish early for the opening game of the 1996 World Cup.

Nothing wrong with having pride in your country.

MaMelon · 14/06/2021 18:59

Why do you ask?

Haudyourwheesht · 14/06/2021 19:00

Ours is.

Watch Martin compstons advert for tennants about today, and you might get it. It really summed it up for me.

"

My eldests is 2 days per week and just before 3 the other three days.

tigger1001 · 14/06/2021 19:06

@mummywithtwokidsplusdog

My children aren’t particularly interested in football- and neither am I BUT we are totally fine with them watching it ... or drawing/reading/chatting to pals instead. After a stressful year I think it’s totally fine for schools to allow the kids to watch it- this thread makes me realise how schools cannot win no matter what they choose to do!
This! Agreed!

Youngest's school didn't even mention that they were going to show it, pretty much like they don't let us know every film they watch unless parental permission is needed.

They have pretty much had a crappy year and this, for many kids ( and adults) was a pretty big deal.

LoopyGremlin · 14/06/2021 19:30

My S4 class this afternoon had the option to watch it or do alternative work that I set on the iPad.

stoprainingffs · 14/06/2021 19:43

I had pupils sitting engrossed in the game, some watching things on their phone, others reading, some drawing… I don’t see an issue. The majority of my class (senior phase) stayed after the bell to watch the end. It was great to see them relaxing with their friends and enjoying something (football or otherwise) after all the shit they’ve had to deal with in the last 15 months. I had bought them all a wee sweetie and they were all rather chuffed with themselves.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 14/06/2021 19:49

People are so weird, surprised that a secondary school day can finish just before 4. DD finishes at 4.25 2 days a week.

DameAlyson · 14/06/2021 19:49

There must have been some amount of "appointments" this afternoon 😂

I was once at Victoria Station in London when a big England game was due to kick off. So many trains were cancelled because of 'driver illness'. I overheard a bloke say 'We all know the real reason, why don't they just come out and say it?'

DollyMixtureLulus · 14/06/2021 20:03

We allowed tartan and Scotland tops and watched it this afternoon. It was lovely.

We're missing out on so much due to Covid- no show, cut down sports day, no end of year trips. It was lovely to see how excited so many were.

doorornottodoor · 14/06/2021 20:19

I let my Higher class watch bits of it (a couple of 15 min segments) over the double period. They watched it on their own devices with headphones in. Those that weren’t interested could work on in relative peace. The football watchers had to do some catch up work over the week. Seemed fair and they were happy. Independent school.

SilenceOfTheNaans · 14/06/2021 20:24

Sheesh... there are alot of knotted knickers on this thread.

Absolutely baffled by some of the responses.

forfucksakenett · 14/06/2021 22:30

Forced nationalism 🤣
