Football being shown in school

DD is thoroughly pissed off that they're going to be made to watch the Scotland match in class this afternoon. I thought it was because it was football (she's not a fan) and possibly because the boys in the class would be louder and lairier than usual (as TBF I know she has got a lot of 'big personalities' in that class). This morning she expressed another thing I hadn't thought of: 'There's no choice so it's forced nationalism, Mum.' On reflection, I think she has a point. On the other hand, it's a big event and I suspect the school thinks there will be a lot of unauthorised absences if they don't let them watch. But if they want them to have the opportunity to see the match, maybe they could send them home early so they can if they choose to - but don't make them all sit through it in school time? How are other schools dealing with it?

Yep, football was the important part of my post. That was definitely what you were supposed to take away from it. Watching football is a life skill. You got it. 👍

SamusIsAGirl · 14/06/2021 11:20

It does beg the question will they show highlights of the women's world cup or the women's euro championship?

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 11:24

Dear god.

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 11:25

That wasn’t to you @SamusIsAGirl You make an excellent point.

Nooproblemoo · 14/06/2021 11:30

I can't believe this is something to complain about.

WeAllHaveWings · 14/06/2021 11:30

Are people really getting this wound up over 2 hrs towards the end of term when kids, especially exam years, are knackered and ready for a break?

ds has spent whole days doing nothing much in class when a large proportion of the class is out doing something else. The last one I can remember was a girls only STEM day, we also had days when the school football or netball team, with some supporters have went for a match. They couldn't continue with lessons as it wouldn't be fair on the others to miss anything or have to catch up so they spent the day mostly bored, chatting or doing some made up activity to keep them occupied. Not ideal, but they were occasional and not worth getting knickers in a twist over.

These things happen, it is really insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Anyone not interested can mess about on their phone, read a book, chat to friends that are also not interested, or if they really feel the need sit with their face tripping them for 2 hours.

SempreSuiGeneris · 14/06/2021 11:41

Really surprised people are bothered about this. Was lovely to see our lot comparing notes on their various nods to the Scotland strip today. Lovely idea for a bit of community building which we are all desperately in need of.

I'm more bothered that I'll have to rush to collect mine at half time.

For reference my DD doesn't like or play football and has one half of her parents supporting a different team. She is still excited for a class event.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 14/06/2021 11:47

so much of this is about the feel good factor getting us to look the other way because theres heavy financial investment in Scotland for the Euros

Right - so what you're saying is that individual teachers and headteachers are shilling for the government, who have co-opted them into their strategy of bread and circuses.

Even though the government have fuck all to do with watching it in schools or not.

And sure, it would be great if they showed the women's games too, why not?

Bytheloch · 14/06/2021 11:53

Lol, of course I’m not saying that about school staff. I’m in awe of how the teachers and school management teams have got through this last year- so absolutely they are up for some fun and feel good factor. They’re not allowed to do any events usually associated with the end of term.

Read my comments again, it’s all about the money invested in Euros. All the positive vibes today- whether in schools or workplaces- is much more agreeable for the commercial interests. Some might say it’s ring fenced from any concerns over covid cases...🧐

SoMuchForSummerLove · 14/06/2021 11:57

Yes, but what I'm saying is, my son's teacher choosing to let them watch a half hour of football before the bell goes at 3pm is literally nothing to do with the finances of the Euros. Maybe one has an effect on the other, but it's not designed that way.

It's only around 45 minutes surely. 'Forced nationalism ' - hmm, where has she got that from? My pupils are buzzing with excitement however there are other options for those who would prefer.
DatingDickheads · 14/06/2021 12:46

It will be on at my sons school. Normal classes cancelled. They will watch it in their registration groups. He’s not into football but he will watch it with his classmates or spend the time on his phone. Whatever he feels like doing.

It’s really no big deal.

seepingweeping · 14/06/2021 12:59

Can't she just sit on her phone instead?

rookiemere · 14/06/2021 13:01

DS not sure if he'll be watching it or not as down to the individual teachers. I think it's good to have something to celebrate after this awful period - yes some DCs may not be interested in football, but DS has zero interest in drama but yet was forced to spend what seemed to be an entire term preparing for a production in P7 where he appeared for 15 seconds as a rather grumpy dancing sea creature. Thems the breaks.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 14/06/2021 14:41

On Twitter the #YesSirICanBoogie hashtag has loads of lovely picture showing what kids are doing around the game. It's actually quite lovely.

Love this! We've linked our lessons to today's match. The children have been so excited and engaged.

50TooTiredForToday

I saw someone on Facebook referring to their kid watching the football today and was surprised. I presumed it was just that school. I can't believe it is widespread. What a massive, massive waste of precious school time!

Or alternatively an opportunity for a bit of fun after all the utter shite they've had to put up with during the last year.
Kids on their knees due to exams /not exams / endless assessments.

Even although the result didn't go our way I applaud the schools who decided to embrace it and bring a bit of non Covid enjoyment to their classrooms.

Schools are big places. I'm sure there would have been options for those who preferred not to watch.

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 14/06/2021 16:53

My children aren’t particularly interested in football- and neither am I BUT we are totally fine with them watching it ... or drawing/reading/chatting to pals instead. After a stressful year I think it’s totally fine for schools to allow the kids to watch it- this thread makes me realise how schools cannot win no matter what they choose to do!

MaMelon · 14/06/2021 17:02

It’s not that schools can’t win, it’s that there didn’t appear to be any alternative for kids who didn’t want to watch it. DSs high school issued a newsletter on Friday saying the kids were going to watch the match. Brilliant for DS who eats, sleeps, breaths and plays the game - less brilliant for those who don’t. It turned out the ‘no phones’ rule was relaxed and they were able to play on them if they didn’t want to watch 90 minutes of footie, but there was nothing in the newsletter to indicate there was an alternative.

The news on the way home kept talking about it being the first time the Scottish team had qualified in a major tournament since 1998 (I think that was the year). Didn’t tge women’s team qualify for the World Cup a couple of years ago Confused

Bitofachinwag · 14/06/2021 17:05

@massiveportion

*There's no choice so it's forced nationalism, Mum.'"

Sure she definitely said that 😂

It's not just Scotland playing, is it?

Play on their phones?! What if you don't have one? Can you bring in another toy from home?
MaMelon · 14/06/2021 17:08

At 14?! Yes, I’m sure they could have brought in a toy if they’d wanted.

Toty · 14/06/2021 17:13

So? My ds had to sit through frozen once which still haunts him to this day. Not everyone is going to like every viewing of a movie/sports event shown is class. Tough really 🤷‍♀️

Twoforthree · 14/06/2021 17:16

I think it’s quite nice. She can read if she doesn’t like it. I’m sure nobody will be holding her head and directing her eyes to the tv.

Twoforthree · 14/06/2021 17:16

And I don’t like football so I’d be the one reading.
