Football being shown in school

DD is thoroughly pissed off that they're going to be made to watch the Scotland match in class this afternoon. I thought it was because it was football (she's not a fan) and possibly because the boys in the class would be louder and lairier than usual (as TBF I know she has got a lot of 'big personalities' in that class). This morning she expressed another thing I hadn't thought of: 'There's no choice so it's forced nationalism, Mum.' On reflection, I think she has a point. On the other hand, it's a big event and I suspect the school thinks there will be a lot of unauthorised absences if they don't let them watch. But if they want them to have the opportunity to see the match, maybe they could send them home early so they can if they choose to - but don't make them all sit through it in school time? How are other schools dealing with it?

why can't the not interested kids go to the break out room or library and read? It's nice for kids that are into it, but since it has zero educational value and is happening at school, I'd have thought there would be some alternative available.

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 10:23

‘Zero educational value.’
Fun is ok you know.

charliebrown59 · 14/06/2021 10:27

I didn't say it wasn't, but it's not my idea of fun, some people are allowed not to find football remotely fun times and do something they do like.

mibbelucieachwell · 14/06/2021 10:27

What a shame for the pupils who don't enjoy football. I feel so strongly about the tyranny of the football cult in Scotland I think I'd be seriously considering phoning the school and asking for alternative provision for children who don't want to watch. Of course it's a trade off with being that parent if your child subsequently needs the school to be on her side.

Have they even had a vote on this?

Do they refer to it as men's football?

Do they acknowledge other Scottish achievements?

Changemusthappen · 14/06/2021 10:27

I forget how middle-class mumsnet is and how much they hate football, which they perceive to be for the entertainment of working-class scumbags

I forget how anyone who likes football doesn't understand how many people don't enjoy football and all the stuff that comes along with it. These same people seem to think that is an afront to them that people aren't interested and object to the constant ramming down our throats of the game. Neither England or Scotland have done anything for years unlike many others sports that really require a high level of discipline and skill!

SoMuchForSummerLove · 14/06/2021 10:30

Zero educational value isn't really true. What about the kids who actually play football and have aspirations to play professionally - lots of boys do.

You could also learn about teamwork, collaboration, creativity, etc.

Or just, you know, let kids have a break and a bit of fun.

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 10:32

I for one perfectly understand how much some people do not enjoy football. This thread however, is the tiresome bollocks of football fans are thick people who enjoy watching men kicking a bag of wind while we do something incredibly worthy and intellectual instead.

Sally872 · 14/06/2021 10:32

Our local school is watching it and I am pleased for them. All the kids are dressed in Scotland kits, tartan or just dressed down and they are very excited, even my own who don't watch football. I expect they will be given a wordsearch or colouring sheet if they don't want to watch the game.

YGive your dd the afternoon off if you want. But I would tell mine to lighten up and she might even enjoy it.

calamityjam · 14/06/2021 10:37

They do this at ds school. We are in England and one of the players is an ex pupil. Nobody complains because he's a nice lad who regularly comes into school when he's in the country. I'm absolutely sure that those who don't want to watch would be allowed to sit in the library and read or get on with whatever they want. However if they didn't show the match, they would not have many kids in school that day.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 14/06/2021 10:37

Our school sent out a text saying they have no plans to watch it, so I assume lots of kids had been asking.

I think it's a real shame. Although I have one child who would love it and one who would find it boring as hell, and would end up drawing instead.

I wonder if individual teachers might show them a bit as a treat at the end of the day though.

Bytheloch · 14/06/2021 10:39

Wake up- all this fuss and celebration in schools has nicely distracted from the complaints about how the schools continue to be impacted by restrictions. So parents can’t go to sports days, children aren’t having any of the P7 trips or induction programmes etc, etc. However, if we all get on board, wear the Scotland kit to school (ffs!🙈) and boogie in the classroom today, the marketing and money men of the Euros will be pacified. It conveniently takes away the noise of folk complaining about the fanzone on Glasgow Green and helps us all to forget the rampaging Rangers fans. It’s all such bullshit and once again, parents are being treated like mugs.

massiveportion · 14/06/2021 10:40

Maybe it speaks more for the kind of school I went to but I find it hard to believe that there are all these children objecting to being allowed to skive for an hour tbh. And if they really feel that strongly about it, then I doubt anyone would object to them reading/drawing/talking to friends/ sitting in the library for an hour, unless they're being strapped to a chair and being forced to watch it Clockwork Orange style.

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 10:43

Grin @massiveportion

MaMelon · 14/06/2021 10:44

DC3 is thrilled to be watching it - DD would have been really pissed off if she’d made to watch it and I can well believe there are plenty of kids who feel the same. I’m hoping his school are offering alternative activities for children have zilch interest in watching men chase a ball up and down a pitch - I didn’t think to ask but probably should have done.

steakandcheeseplease · 14/06/2021 10:45

I can see how unappealing this could be to some people but I actually think its a great idea at having some positivity and energy back in schools.

I think schools absolutely needs to celebrate sporting occasions like this more.

massiveportion · 14/06/2021 10:46

Maybe those against it can reframe it in their minds as an important life lesson about having to sometimes sit through boring shit we couldn't care less about?

Haudyourwheesht · 14/06/2021 10:46

It's not forced nationalism. It's a football game. No one will be asked to demonstrate nationalism. No one will even be asked to support a particular team.

My pupils will be offered the opportunity to read if they choose not to watch the football, or I can give them a written task.

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 10:47

To those parents who think their dc should be studying instead of watching the game, why not talk to them about how tribalism is human nature. They could observe their less sophisticated classmates and knock out a thesis in those precious 90 minutes that would otherwise be lost.

MaMelon · 14/06/2021 10:47

Maybe those against it can reframe it in their minds as an important life lesson about having to sometimes sit through boring shit we couldn't care less about?

Fuck that. It’s football, hardly an important life lesson.

Twintwix · 14/06/2021 10:48

I think the school is just trying to do something contemporary and fun for the children and your daughter needs to understand that not everything will be what she wants/ is interested it. It's hardly "forced nationalism" - it's just kids watching their national team playing in a tournament. I think people are way overthinking this. I say this as someone with no interest in football or independence!

Mrsjayy · 14/06/2021 10:49

Forced nationalism ,,😂😂

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 10:49

@MaMelon did you hear the wind whistle through your hair when you so spectacularly missed the point?

SoMuchForSummerLove · 14/06/2021 10:49

@Bytheloch what on earth are you on about? You seem to think there's a governmental conspiracy theory behind kids getting an hour to watch sport in school. I think you might be reading too much into things.

ladygindiva · 14/06/2021 10:50

I was forced to watch both Diana and fergies weddings at primary school. Dull AF. Would much rather have watched football tbh.

MaMelon · 14/06/2021 10:51

Jahebejrjr - nope, did you?
