Bank holiday or... not?

Apologies; first year living up here and some things I am still getting to grips with!
Pretty sure it's a bank holiday on Monday. So I organised work to look after DC. But they seem to be at school... I think (school does a lot of communicating but not necessarily of anything relevant).
Is this just a covid thing or should I be less reliant on bank holidays being... holidays?

I've only been up a year and bank holidays are often regional rather than national, plus many organisations ignore them or do English ones or even US ones.

My DC's school had today and Monday as "half term"...

Yes as pp says holiday Mondays tend to be regional so depends where in Scotland you are. Holiday dates will be on your council website

Yup regional, we are in Ayrshire and the kids are off school Monday.

Have the school not given you a print out of the holiday dates?

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion noooo. Weekly letter about all kinds of random stuff and then occasional frantic text when they clearly forgot something critical. They're really good apart from that!

Ok; so it sounds legit then! Council website doesn't mention it. We live and learn!

I'm in Edinburgh and we had Victoria Day on the 24th but in School on the 31st. (Work in a school nursery).

Yeah we don't seem to get bog standard holidays. Like we don't get the August bank holiday however we get a September weekend.

Your council website should give the school holiday dates

My kids were off at the start of may bank holiday but aren’t off again until an in service in June.
Bank holiday doesn’t generally mean day off unless it’s a holiday weekend like Easter, Christmas, May Day that sort of thing.

Type unto Google school holidays 20/21 for your district and you should get it.

School dates and bank holidays vary across Scotland. The banks can be closed and the post offices open, local authorities and NHS regional boards all have different holidays too.

Aberdeenshire and kids are in on Monday. Found this out after I emailed the school to ask. I'm happy to look like a dick though. Really happy as it's DH birthday on Monday so we can go out without them.

We're off school on Monday, and Tuesday for an in-service. But May holidays vary hugely around the country, when I was at school in Edinburgh the second May holiday was always known as Victoria Day.

DH is in work as usual on Monday, it's not a bank holiday according to his employer.

Some areas even "celebrate" Easter on a different weekend (the Monday anyway).

We used to have a lot of temporary staff up from England. When we explained we don't have an August Bank Holiday as a universal day off in Scotland, they thought we were pulling their leg. We weren't.

It's been amended after my head pointed it out. The Christmas holidays for this Dec have been changed but I don't know if it's been changed online yet.

Are you going to the page on the council website that gives the term dates?

I'm a shade frustrated DS had Monday and Tuesday off and I've had yesterday and Monday coming.

My guess would be Edinburgh council forgot to change it from the original school end date to the 25th. I think the earlier finish in June is in lieu of the early August start last year.

Moray are not off on Monday but we get a local holiday on June 14th which is a bit daft just the week before we break up for summer hols

@RaraRachael my school in Moray is off for in-service Monday. I thought all schools in the area would be the same.

Yes I did too.msssm We had in-service days on May 13th and 14th. I think they are normally standardised but may be different this year due to Covid. We'd usually have them on the same days so that school staffs could get together but of course that's not possible at the moment.

South Lanarkshire here and our schools were off Friday and Monday for the bank holiday weekend. But, just to complicate matters, I work in the FE sector in the same council area and we don't get the bank holiday 🤷🏼‍♀️

East ayrshire, holiday Monday and exceptional inservice days Tuesday /Wednesday to allow teachers to compete assessment grading.

It is a bank holiday but schools aren't off in my area. We had 7th 10th 13th & 14th May off school (2 of those days were in service).

Council website will list all the school holidays.
