East Renfrewshire numbers much higher than Glasgow now.
Whats going on?

ssd · 02/06/2021 19:27

They need to bring in vaccine hubs here for over 18s. East Ren is hellish.

Bytheloch · 02/06/2021 20:16

Anyone else seen this on Twitter?

  • Today, Health Sec @HumzaYousaf said 10 children age 0-9 were in hospital last week "because of Covid". A serious claim. We asked Scot Gov for
  • The basis of the figures
  • If any are seriously ill
  • If Mr Yousaf was definitely correct *

It’s a Chris Musson thread posted this evening with the SG response to the enquires (sent 7 hours after the questions asked🙈)

Also this:
The Health Sec also claimed if parents from a Level 2 area took kids to a soft play in a Level 1 area (where soft plays can open) it "could lead to hospitalisation of children".

sparkle17 · 02/06/2021 20:38

Yes I heard him talk about that on the radio.....so now soft plays can't open in case children are hospitalised. At no point in the pandemic has the lockdown been about stopping children getting hospitalised.

user1487194234 · 02/06/2021 20:43

He is a fucker of the highest order

WouldBeGood · 02/06/2021 20:44

He’s a total dick.

And trying to scare people with bollocks about perfectly legal activities is really really shit.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 02/06/2021 20:52

That sounds very much like some of the scaremongering I was railing against earlier - designed to manipulate the population through fear. I suspect that at this point though, we're all so used to these tactics we've stopped paying too much attention. If children were at significant risk would we not be closing schools and nurseries? More to the point, since the media love a good scare story, would it not be all over the news by now?

Icannever · 02/06/2021 21:04

I heard him on the radio and he sounded like an eejit. Nothing he said made any sense. The soft play owners however made lots of sense when they said that people would just drive out of tier two area into tier one areas to take kids to soft play if they wanted to. Particularly easy for those in Dundee who have plenty of tier one areas to choose from. So basically having different levels could cause it to spread further afield 🙄.
@Cismyfatarse I have my second dose tomorrow in Cupar and my sister had her first in st.Andrews today. It’s good they’ve opened one there now.

Scottishskifun · 02/06/2021 21:08

I hope that the figures get grilled properly.

It's also completely out of order to suggest that softplays will cause hospitalisations! These businesses have been shut for 15 months and he's trying to scare monger against max 30 children dependant on size (as these are the guidelines) when 6000 adults per day will be allowed into a area for a piss up/watch football?! 😠🤬

Haudyourwheesht · 02/06/2021 21:12

I'm so glad she's chosen such a measured, sensible, health secretary. Surely someone in that important a role wouldn't make knee-jerk, unfounded statements designed to cause panic and hysteria?

Fucker.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 02/06/2021 22:35

Also great to have someone working in health who isn't sure how many sexes there are, or what a woman is.

WouldBeGood · 02/06/2021 22:47

True @SoMuchForSummerLove.

He’s not an intellectual giant, is he?

Bytheloch · 02/06/2021 23:01

What annoys me is the fear this evokes, just when it feels like we’re feeling the sun on our faces (sadly still behind masks in too many places, but still...) and vaccines are bringing hope to those who need it. Families and young people have been through so much crap and finger pointing at them already- they can eff off with trying to stoke the fear factor again. It’s irresponsible and needs calling out.

ResilienceWanker · 03/06/2021 09:04

Whaaat??! He's just making stuff up, isn't he? He can't actually believe that. Otherwise travel between tiers would be stopped, and soft plays closed (because there is still covid in tier 1, which could lead to hospitalisation of children, donchaknow - though that's never been the aim of restrictions before). So he's either made a mistake, or said something that was misinterpreted, in which case he should fess up or clarify, or he's just lying for the sake of it. Nice...

SoMuchForSummerLove · 03/06/2021 09:04

Nope @WouldBeGood

He was being interviewed a while ago and refused to say how many sexes there were, and I'm pretty sure his daughter (or step daughter maybe) was in the background. So presumably his wife gave birth at some point. And his daughter is a girl, proof of which he's likely seen with his own eyes. Imagine living with a man who pretends he doesn't know what sex his family members are!

Fucking madness.

Yep exactly this!!!!!

Pretty much every Dr has said children often show no symptoms, there are some rare issues with it presenting like kalowsaki (sorry no idea how that one is spelt) so these are symptoms to watch for but it is very rare!

What makes me so angry is that they are still trying this blame and fear culture! It's a ffffing virus I don't see people blaming others for catching a cold!

I've actually stopped talking to a 'friend' who told me I must have done something wrong to catch covid and its my fault I now have long covid! When asked what this was based on she said well it's true the govt have been telling us for over a year! FFS Angry

Sorry for the rant!

Haudyourwheesht · 03/06/2021 09:38

John Swinney has confirmed this morning that there are 10 children in hospital, which, it was certainly implied, was because of covid, not 'with' covid. It's still a relatively tiny number but it's fitting with the outbreaks in schools and I've also heard a few nurseries have been hit hard.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 03/06/2021 09:42

I really hate to think of any child being in hospital with Covid. Makes my blood run absolutely cold. I think a lot of parents have been kept sane by being able to think 'if the kids get it at least I know they'll be fine'. And of course 10 is a tiny number. But still, it niggles in the back of my mind.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 03/06/2021 09:48

Do we know anything about these 10 children in hospital (which I agree is a tiny number in the scheme of things)? For instance how seriously ill are they - I assume if they were in HDU/PICU we'd be hearing that? Do they have any underlying conditions that make them more susceptible?

I'm just not buying this implication that children are now massively at risk when they haven't been at any point in the pandemic thus far (and the data are very clear on that). If there was a significant risk to children there would certainly be a fuss and very specific warnings about it, whereas in fact they're still allowing under 12s to mix freely and keeping schools/nurseries open.

florafoxtrot · 03/06/2021 09:48

I’m the same @SoMuchForSummerLove. I do understand that the chances of DD being seriously ill are slim but I think it’s natural to worry too Sad

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 03/06/2021 09:50

My own child has been hospitalised with flu previously, as have many others I'm sure, but they were never in any serious danger from it, so these questions matter.

latissimusdorsi · 03/06/2021 10:21

how many of these children were actually admitted to hospital for treatment for Covid? Or did they go in with appendicitis or an op for glue ear and happened to be found positive on testing? It's pretty rife in some primary schools at moment so higher chance of a child being positive if tested

Scottishskifun · 03/06/2021 10:22

Yeah I read the statement on twitter but even John Swinney didn't confirm if hospitalisation was as a result of covid or not so still none the wiser!

Our town had a big nursery outbreak with over 50 cases (3 nurseries) in March that's where I got my covid from, no children needed a hospital visit the majority DS included had no symptoms and some had a cough/runny nose.
It csn cause a fever though and we have ended up in hospital with DS in the past because of crazy high fevers!

I think they need to be open and honest here and not give bloody politician wishy washy statements!

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 03/06/2021 10:31

Yeah, I think given their track record of twisting data to try and manipulate the population, I'm not going to panic unless I hear actual scientists presenting real data that children are at significant risk. I suspect they realised that the level system falls down when people can quite freely just travel to the surrounding areas instead, so went to their default "imply the worst to scare people" setting to try and keep everyone in line.

TheMShip · 03/06/2021 10:46

DS has just been sent home from school today, 2 classes now self-isolating. Probably spread from Davidson's Mains which is nearby. We've only just finished 10 days self-isolation of DD after a case in her nursery (not attached to the school).
