Restaurants Edinburgh

Hi I'm looking for a few restaurant recommendations for Edinburgh.

Specifically a Chinese restaurant near the Playhouse/Calton Hill. Nothing too modern, preferably traditional and not a buffet.

Also looking for a fish and chip takeaway, same area.

Lots coming up on google but would love some personal recommendations. Thank you!

Not my side of town so I've not eaten in them but there's Guillianos for fish & chips and Deep Sea both just across the road from the Playhouse.
Karen's Unicorn is probably the closest Chinese. There's also Tattu but that's very modern (and pricey!).
There's some nice places to eat in that area if you're open to different cuisines......Howies, Olive Branch Bistro, The Joseph Pearce, Smoke Stack, Vittorias, Pomegrante, Educated Flea,

Second Karen’s Unicorn on Abercrombie place! Great Chinese.

Tattu overpriced and I didn’t really enjoy the food (although I liked the indoors cherry blossom trees!)

emmathedilemma · 11/05/2021 13:59

All I'd be able to think about in tattu @GrandPrismatic is dust dropping off the trees into my food ;)

Sorry off topic but I was shocked at how pricey Tattu was - and that's with the Eat out to help out discount.
Starters - sorry small dishes - were exquisite and worth the price, but the main courses sorry - big dishes - were roughly £20 - £25 each and no better than you'd get from your local Chinese restaurant at a third of the price.

Thanks Emma and Grand, happy to take those recommendations. We already have Howie's booked, we're staying just opposite so will also probably book something in the Omni. We'll have kids with us so want the walk back to be quick especially as Edinburgh can become a bit "lively" in the evenings!

That is a thought indeed! To their credit, pre COVID when I was last there..it was spotless...I just didn’t love the food! I might ask for window seats though if I go back Grin

There's a pizza express and a Prezzo on north bridge which are usually good with kids (assuming they've both mad it through lockdown). Some of the pubs on the royal mile allow kids in until 8pm if they're eating. The Whiski Bar does nice traditional bar food.

Opposite the Playhouse there's a new place just opened called Down the Hatch. Canadian diner food - fabulous! There's also a Turkish restaurant called Ada in the same strip of restaurants which is always excellent.

mykitchenruler · 12/05/2021 17:29

Down the Hatch is fabulous!
