Placing request refused

I’m in Glasgow city council area and just got my daughters placing request refusal letter in today. We have sent a letter to appeal and have my fingers crossed we get in.

To clarify we live across the road from the high school - 600 feet from our door to the main entrance according to google maps but it’s actually less as we face the entrance to the school car park. Our catchment school is over 2 miles away. 40 minute walk or a 20 minute bus ride and a 10 minute walk.

The school itself isn’t even in its own catchment area. It’s complicated but basically involved closing a school and moving it to another building but keeping the old catchment. So even if my house was physically inside the school grounds we wouldn’t be in the catchment area - crazy.

It’s all just so frustrating. Has anyone else had placing request letters back yet? How did you get on? Anyone else waiting on an appeal meeting date?

That's crazy
I had to do placing requests for my 2 dcs as we are closer to the non catchment school. They can (in theory) walk to the school they are in but their catchment school would require some sort of transport due to how far away it is.

Fingers crossed you get in on appeal

@dementedpixie
Thanks. I’ve got my fingers crossed. Her two friends have got in and they live further away than us to the school but in the opposite direction so even further out of catchment than us. Understandably my daughter is very upset and has been crying.

Her primary school has said most children who apply do get in so I’m a bit baffled as to why we didn’t. I don’t even know what will happen if we don’t get in as we have effectively given up her place in the catchment school by doing the placing request.

If she did get into her catchment it’s going to cost me a fortune in bus fares. The council go by the quickest walking route for distance (2 miles so under the 2.2 required for free transport) but I wouldn’t let her walk that way. It’s down a path, away from main roads and there’s been a few instances of flashers and rapes in the last year so no way would I let her walk that route as an 11 year old girl. Especially as she would be in her own as her friends are going to the other school. She would need to get a bus then do a 10/15 minute walk instead.

You’ve not given up her place in the catchment school by making a placement request.

Did the government not promise free bus transport to children?
