Oh you said pro-union. Sorry @fandabbydoozy got carried away with trying to be impartial! Thats what living in Glasgow will do to you.

MissBarbary · 01/04/2021 18:46

@BlackForestCake

Galloway is not remotely comparable to Salmond in terms of what success he can expect. He has no support base left. The left see him as a turncoat, the right see him as a traitor.
I didn't attend any of his anti- separatism events in 2014 but I do know someone who took his teenage daughters, who were voting for the first time and were considering voting for separatism, to hear him. Galloway convinced them of the Unionist case.

@TheShadowyFeminist

According to this poll, Alba isn't getting the support needed to be considered relevant in the election.

I honestly can't see how they can increase their profile/ awareness & be able to translate that into votes at all.

I wonder how much support would be reasonable in the first week after launch?

I can see two arguments - that launch week is the best coverage you’re going to get; or it’s too early for people to have decided to give their support.

TheShadowyFeminist · 01/04/2021 19:25

Fair point. I think my (badly phrased) point was that it's far more difficult to get out & about to raised awareness in the 'normal' sense & social media is such a tiny proportion of the electorate, it's not going to make up for the difficulties in limits to physically campaigning.

I guess the 3% could go either way, but it's definitely a challenge to increase that in a COVID restricted campaign.

I am going to be attending a virtual hustings next week. Trying to think about what I might want to ask. Any ideas?

TheShadowyFeminist · 01/04/2021 21:18

What issues concern you most? Have they confirmed who is attending?

OP posts:
fandabbydoozy · 01/04/2021 22:10

No idea who's attending from each party. They haven't said yet.
As a disabled person, Covid worries me and the return to work whilst covid continues.
Also equalities issues - womens rights and disability matters.
Also I am anti independence

WouldBeGood · 01/04/2021 22:36

I’d ask about GRA and the HCB and for views, saying that I feel disenfranchised and scared.

Also about plans for move out of lockdown.

How independence would work practically, eg borders, money, pandemic recovery.

Plans to close the educational attainments gap?

All this.

Also, how do the parties plan to fund their election promises and ask for some degree of precision in their answer rather than a waffly generic one that they will try to palm off on you. (I’m an accountant...I like to know my debits and credits 😁)

Re early Alba polling. For comparison The Brexit Party went from below 10% in April to over 30% in the European election result 6 weeks later.

SempreSuiGeneris · 02/04/2021 07:37

The misappropriation of Covid business grants to SNP branch operations in Angus story just gets worse and worse.

"Tim Rideout taught SNP supporters how to game the Covid business support grants, and encouraged them to divert the money to his own group.

He did all of this on Facebook, and boasted: “I have made over £50k for the indy cause today”"

YES hubs also implicated.

I saw a lot of "charitable outreach" involving prominent Yes activists during the first lockdown which made me suspicious. This does not surprise me at all.

fandabbydoozy · 02/04/2021 08:37

ok good. We've to submit questions in advance. Pretty sure my questions won't get asked because the organiser of the hustings is rather woke.

Thanks, that’s interesting. I suppose they had the backing of a few prominent tabloids though which would help.

I agree with the comment underneath. Whataboutery at it's finest.

So, becasue a small number (comparatively) of branches in rUK did the same, it means encouraging SNP branches to do the same is fine? Hmm

Cismyfatarse · 02/04/2021 17:02

Just posting to get it past 666 - the number of the beast......

The financial stuff is kicking off again. Wings has an as yet unverified claim that police Scotland have a report about the £600k indyref fund irregularities & have allegedly interviewed sturgeon & murrell before her leaders debate this week.

Police are staying tight lipped on whether any report has been made, or whether it's nonsense.

The stuff on the COVID Indy/SNP groups claiming business relief funds is bad enough.

WouldBeGood · 02/04/2021 19:26

@TheShadowyFeminist 😱 the plot really does thicken.

Surely that would cause something to be done?

TheShadowyFeminist · 02/04/2021 19:57

I suppose that depends on what's going on & if there's can't merit to the claim/report. This, along with the Indy groups claiming business relief funds they shouldn't have, is not a great look during an election campaign. I'm wondering if any of the opposition will challenge her on the next debate on this?

Having told the Fabiani inquiry under oath that she didn’t know who all the complainers were, and if she did know them she didn’t know them very well, the FM is now telling newspapers that she knows some of the women and they are having difficulty seeing Alex Salmond back on the public stage.

She needs to make her mind up. But more than that, she needs to stop trotting out these women as cover for an attack on Salmond.

SempreSuiGeneris · 03/04/2021 08:39

This is the STV coverage of the business grant story.

news.stv.tv/politics/sturgeon-snp-branches-are-repaying-coronavirus-grant-money?top

So much whataboutery and looking to get off on a technicality. It's one thing to fall below standards but when the first reaction is to deflect and justify rather than apologise and reassure that matters have been put right there is a problem. Even STV is struggling to hide it. The attempt at "ach but their all just as bad" is highlighting rather than minimising.

Whole pattern and attitude to everything whether its sleaze, financial wrongdoing or economic mismanagement and failure to deliver on education, new hospitals or ferries.

Happinessisawarmcervix · 03/04/2021 09:49

I don’t understand why it was ever thought appropriate for them to claim.

Well exactly! Other than being greedy and sleekit.
LizzieMacQueen · 03/04/2021 10:13

I have heard of multiple erroneous (deliberate or not ?) claims though I'm an accountant so perhaps I'm more likely to hear of them. None in my practice .... yet. But it is happening on a large scale.
