Lothian Buses Stopping all Services Tonight Due to Attacks on Drivers

I get that what has happened is horrible - and the idiots throwing stones and bikes at buses need to be prosecuted. It's terrible for anyone to have to work in those conditions and I do feel appalling for them.

But I also know several people badly affected by this including an elderly person having cancer treatment which ends after seven thirty, and women who are scared to walk in the dark after the events of last week.

I don't know the answer, but I'm upset it's come to this.

Just awful isn't it. Lothian buses have done the right thing as it is only a matter of time before someone was killed or seriously injured.

Also terrible for the people who now need to find alternative ways to get home.

I would seriously doubt that the young people involved in this attend clubs or youth groups in normal times, museummum.

My thoughts too.

At least one of the areas involved used to have council funded “early intervention” youth work projects with the exact aim of preventing anti-social behaviour.
Pretty sure it was cancelled after council cuts and redundancy rather than covid but the result is the same, undoing years of work.

I'm not in Scotland but we have a similar issue in parts of Bristol. The latest thing that First bus has done is to get police officers- who are stretched enough as it is- to ride certain routes in an attempt to catch the idiots in the act.

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/03/2021 08:21

I've seen this being charged as attempted murder when it's been on a motorway.

If you live in the area, you must be able to put 2 and 2 together that your your teen was out when this was happening?

This has been happening here for the last week. Decoy buses with police driving it have also been doing routes. It's not worked.

It's not been publicised yet but another bus was attacked last night, just after 7pm. My DH is due to be driving the late shift tonight. No idea if he'll be safe or not.

That is such a shame and really short sighted given the additional costs if the young people go on to become offenders. It does need specialised services though, they are not likely to be going to local Scouts or sports activities. I remember Spartans running an evening football session for young people - that was a great idea. And the council leisure centres had sessions for teenagers too.

Wow that’s quite a decision. Off to Google to find out more (skipped all Scottish TV news last couple of days because it doesn’t seem to be keen to report in any depth on the important stuff and is annoying me - don’t get me started on the Nine!)

LouScot · 18/03/2021 14:12

@ImAbsolutelyTwatted ffs, what is wrong with these idiots?! There's a terminus near me and I saw the driver switching to not in service just before 7. 30 but stupidly it didn't even occur to me that the wee shites would just go out before that Angry.

Hope your DH and all the other drivers are safe tonight. We're so lucky to have Lothian Buses here, I think we take things for granted.

theotherfossilsister · 18/03/2021 17:29

@imabsolutelytwatted another attack last night, what idiots. I hope he's ok tonight. Lothian buses is a fantastic service as pp said. It's horrible that these twats are attacking drivers. I just don't get why. I know teenagers are bored but attacking strangers doing their job is ridiculous.
