Where to buy in Glasgow for a single woman

Hi all,
My fiancé has broken up with me and now I am looking for a new place to call home. We currently own a flat in Edinburgh where we moved from London to be closer to his family. I found a job at the University of Glasgow, so it would make sense for me to move there, especially as I am new to Scotland and have no friends here.
I would like to get a small flat (studio or a 1bed) and should have a budget of around 120k. Can someone suggest some nice areas in or around Glasgow as I have no clue where to go (I know that the west end is nice but also very expensive)?

Thank you

Have you thought of renting rather than buying in West End. At least to start with.

It's a great way to kickstart a new social circle if you find the right flatmates, and then maybe buy when you've had more chance to explore other places.

And you should get much more for your money.

I rented there 20yrs ago and made friends for life after moving from Edinburgh. (Though ultimately moved back to E'burgh and commuted).

Plus you'll be walking distance from work.

Hi all,

Just checking-in. Properties are selling like crazy! way above the HR value and usually within a week. I had to start looking at cheaper options if I want to be able to overpay... I am viewing this property on Fri. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/104544845#/
It is on NorthPark St just off the Maryhill Rd. Can anyone give me some opinions about the area? I have read good and bad things about Maryhill and Firhill so I am really not sure what to think.
Thank you :)

I've dm'd you about this. I think this is not a bad flat and the area is ok. However I do think @kersland1's suggestion is a good one - renting as part of a flat share for an initial period might be the way to go. The you could get to know the area/city a bit better and not feel pressured into buying.
I think there is a lack of supply of property for sale just now - we were looking this time last year and there was definitely more on offer then - sorry .

Have you seen this one

I'd say the area is a bit better - but this needs work. However they might take an offer ? Worth a look at if you're going to be in Northpark St anyway.

In Maryhill, the general rule is that one side of Maryhill road is fine, the other is not. North park st is the wrong side. The side that Dunard Street is on is great.

I don’t know that street exactly but think what DoAs says is reasonable. The whiteinch one is probably a better location. The Partick one will go over 120k for sure. It’s so hard just now, things are so inflated. I also wonder if renting initially is a good idea, to help you get your own feel as well as get to know folk.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 22/04/2021 17:41

That Partick flat is in a good spot.

@DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy That's what I thought based on my experience quite a long time ago so glad I've not been giving duff advice. However we were looking in roughly the same area as OP last year and just off Maryhill Rd on that side is kind of ok - we did consider Northpark St but it sold before we could view.

I agree that OP should consider renting fro a wee while to find her feet and get to know the area

toucancancan · 22/04/2021 19:12

Yes, second the renting, then it gives you time to make an informed choice about where and what you buy.

I used to stay just over Maryhill Road from Northpark Street and I loved it as it was so handy for the West End / uni but a bit of a pain when there was football on, and it was a bit neddy which doesn't bother me. There was quite a lot of traffic noise from Maryhill Road too. There is a fire station just up from there so be warned!

I think renting is a really good idea as it's a way to make some friends - I work at the Uni as well and most of us are not going back anytime soon.
