Where to buy in Glasgow for a single woman

Hi all,
My fiancé has broken up with me and now I am looking for a new place to call home. We currently own a flat in Edinburgh where we moved from London to be closer to his family. I found a job at the University of Glasgow, so it would make sense for me to move there, especially as I am new to Scotland and have no friends here.
I would like to get a small flat (studio or a 1bed) and should have a budget of around 120k. Can someone suggest some nice areas in or around Glasgow as I have no clue where to go (I know that the west end is nice but also very expensive)?

Thank you

Would agree west end is more convenient but as a south sider it's worth considering. Parts of Pollokshields are walkable to Shields Rd subway which makes getting to Hillhead easy - also has good rail and bus links.

For the west end look in G20 but be careful of going too far north of Maryhill Rd, G11 and G12 - with G12 you'll probably need to go towards Anniesland. Dd is a student at Glasgow and we used these postcodes when flat-hunting for her - she is now in a 2 bed just south of Maryhill Rd.
For Finnieston - use G3 which will also get you the bit of Garnethill which a pp recommended and which I'd agree is a decent choice. Close to city centre but not miles to the university.

Glasgow is brilliant - more friendly than Edinburgh ( IMO). Good luck

Thank you all, this has made me feel so much better about the whole situation and I think I am ready to start over. I think I will start arranging the viewings and see how it goes. There may be more spam in this thread as I try to decide between the options! :)

Good luck OP and be sure you report back! Ps I'm a wiz at scouring over home reports too! Don't forget to check the council tax bands and factors charges, they can vary hugely.

snowcoveredcampsies · 13/03/2021 14:37

[quote Teentitansonloop]OP I'm biased because I live there about I love Garnethill, it's a quiet area within the city centre. It had a brilliant community atmosphere, a community garden, a communal bread over. And you can walk everywhere. But basically anywhere in the west end vicinity is good for Glasgow Uni.

I've always loved this area! Never lived in Glasgow proper but it's my dream.

Teentitansonloop · 14/03/2021 01:28

It is a great area, not perfect, but it definitely feels special, it's a wee green village right in the heart of the city. Hope you can join us one day Smile

LadyJaye · 14/03/2021 03:09

I'm a born and bred southsider and prices are MENTAL here just now - ÂŁ110k min for a one-bed, plus the usual 20% expected on Scottish housing offers.

Our two-bed Georgian tenement (admittedly in a v desirable southside address) has just been valued at an insane ÂŁ220k - it's starting to get like London...

Most of the West End will be out of your budget, too - have you considered North Glasgow? Bit of a trek, but trains are good and you'll get more for your money.

Teentitansonloop · 14/03/2021 14:36

I agree it is actually shocking what the house prices are like. I'm wondering if cessnock would be another option? It's on the subway line.

Teentitansonloop · 14/03/2021 14:54

Actually I don't think it would be worth the hassle. There are definitely options in Partick, Thornwood, Kelvindale, Anniesland, Knightswood. In some areas you could cycle to the University and could perhaps afford a two bedroom with a flat mate, which might be nice.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 14/03/2021 18:27

Sorry about your breakup. I think that it would be better for you to be as west end as possible for now, even if that means a tiny property. I lived in the west end for donkeys years and Thornwood was always a good bet for a reasonably priced flat. It's quiet and safe and right next to Partick. You can always move further out for more space once you've established yourself. Glasgow buses are unreliable and the subway has limited running hours, plus it can be hard to get a taxi on the south side (IME) so as a newly single lady, I'd stick to the west end for now. If you like Stockbridge, it should suit you đź’•

Teentitansonloop · 18/03/2021 17:12

@Wander99spirit I think I've found the perfect one! www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/89881843#/

Wander99spirit · 18/03/2021 17:47

@Teentitansonloop a very budget-friendly find, wow! Even has a balcony! I don't know anything about the area though. Is it safe? And thank you for thinking of me!

That flat is in a great area, walking distance to town and west end. GWR literally on your door. Some lovely shops and bars in that area too

readsalotgirl63 · 18/03/2021 18:00

That's a great location.

StarryEyeSurprise · 18/03/2021 18:53

I used to live literally round the corner. Yes, great area. The flats that are literally on the other side of Napiershall St would be ÂŁ160k for the same.
Walk up Napiershall St a little bit and turn left and there's a lovely street you can walk down ( around Lansdowne Cres) and past Kelvinbridge subway and into Kelvingrove Park w/o crossing GWR.
Can also walk the same way but turn right and you'll walk past / under a lovely church and onto the Kelvin walkway. Beautiful Riverside walk which takes you to the Botanics ( and further !). If you don't feel like walking to work, you can get the subway at St George's Cross or Kelvinbridge and you'll be at Byres Road in 5/ 10 mins.
The West End festival is brilliant. It's in June and events are on for the full month. Holyrood Gardens ( 2 mins walk) hold a fete/ bbq as part of it.
It's a lovely area. Just try suss out the neighbours before you buy - incase they're students.
Oh there's a yoga place there too ( revive?) and Tesco at the top of the street. Glasgow Life gym 10 mins walk too ( in the middle of a housing estate but it's fine).
It's a really great location.

AgentCooper · 18/03/2021 19:08

Sorry to hear about your break up OP Flowers I work at Glasgow Uni and once we’re all back to work it honestly is a really nice place. I used to live in the Woodlands area and loved walking through the park to work. Avoid West Princes St like the plague though - absolute midden.

Re: Dennistoun, my sister has just had an offer of 70k on her one bed flat (offers over 59k).

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/03/2021 19:54

Wow, some great options in that price bracket!

Teentitansonloop · 19/03/2021 00:32

No problem @Wander99spirit, I was probably you a few years ago, so I know what it's like to start over.

Re the flat I posted, it's in fantastic location, a quite street just round the corner from the bustling great western road with cafes and bars. It'll probably get snapped up quickly, for offers over the home report. Hope you find something good when it's time to start looking properly. I think serious hunting can be like having another full time job, particularly in a fast moving area.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 19/03/2021 10:15

Agreed that Burnbank Terrace is a brilliant location. I used to live round there too, and the Holyrood gardens fete is fab Smile

SuperLemonCrush · 19/03/2021 17:22

This brings back happy memories of carefree days in Glasgow...shared flats for me, but West End will always have a special place in my heart! I hope you find something great, have lots of fun and adventures, and end up with as many fond memories as I doSmile

Maria53 · 26/03/2021 01:05

Hi OP, single woman in late 20s here. I recently moved from renting in Partick to buying a home in Scotstoun.

West End was too pricey & Partick had some nice 1 beds but I needed more space and the 2 beds in Partick were out of my budget.

I found a beautiful spacious flat in Scotstoun. Next to the park. I was worried about isolation but honestly I spent the sunny weekend in the west end parks there and transport is great. Happy with my decision.

Newsorrynewagain · 02/04/2021 21:32

I would stay clear of govanhill. Defo look at knightswood, Partick, yoked

19lottie82 · 03/04/2021 01:59

I think you’ll struggle to get a flat in Partick for your budget, and tbh the nice parts of the south side have shot up in price too, I don’t think Shawlands is much cheaper than the west end now tbh!

Dennistoun is decent as long as you stay at the end nearer the city centre, the far end is really Haghill, and a bit rough, but estate agents will describe it as Dennistoun.

I have a few friends in Kinning Park and it’s definitely within your budget. There are lots of nice new builds. It is a little bit rough round the edges but I’ve never felt unsafe there. There’s an underground station and it’s within walking distance of the city centre.

19lottie82 · 03/04/2021 02:01

Scotstoun could also be a shout. The amenities are good, and the public transport is great. You can get an express bus which will drop you at central station in under ten minutes!

Yoker is a bit rough tbh so I would avoid it.

felulageller · 04/04/2021 19:25

Look at the subway route. The quickest public transport to hillhead for the uni. Much faster than the bus from most of the west end locations mentioned above.

Some of them are in run down areas (Ibrox springs to mind) so avoid but there are some lovely flats next to cessnock station that will get you a great tenement for your money. Do it up a bit and make the next move to nearer the uni.
