Manifesto for Women's Rights in Scotland

Hello there, an informal network of women under the name Women Speak Scotland have released a 'Manifesto for Women's Rights in Scotland' today.

This isn't affiliated to any political party, and we hope the Manifesto will help women and men to engage in conversation about any concerns around the rights of women and girls with potential parliamentary candidates in the weeks leading up to the election in May.

We even managed to get an entire piece in the Scotsman this weekend!

Women’s manifesto aims to put pressure on Scottish parties to ‘reaffirm sex-based rights’

You can view the Manifesto and more information about it on our website.

Happy to answer any questions as best I can. Thanks. Smile

I'd quite like to see more pressure on the Government to acknowledge the impact of covid restrictions in terms of women's ability to work, run businesses, mental health, and domestic violence (that's not an exhaustive list). The pandemic has had quite a gendered impact, particularly on women with children or other care responsibilities, but it doesn't seem to be on the SG's radar.

Well it would help if the Scottish Government knew the correct definition of "woman" for starters.

I’m very glad both you and Forwomen Scotland are doing all this! It can all get very disheartening with so many agencies being captured by TRAs. Thank you

Yes, there has been a lot of consequences from the pandemic and the lockdown responses to it, with women more likely to lose their independence and financial security. Along with care responsibilities. It would be great if women were able to highlight these issues when contacting candidates or participating in online hustings. The next government need to realise they can't shy away from these issues.

Thank you, Blurberoo. We're counting on individual women to contact their candidates and find out the responses.

Thank you! Good to see. I will be writing to my local candidates.

Thank you for doing this, had a brief look at the website and it's a great resource.

I'll also be writing a few letters this weekend.
