Libraries

OK, so libraries are closed but has anyone been able to contact their library via phone/email. My library membership has expired and I can't access borrowbox (wails...........). I would have thought a member of library staff could have been working from home to update memberships etc.

I'd check your council website and see if they give an email or something.

reprehensibleme · 08/02/2021 12:38

There's 2 emails - first email attempt gave me another email address to try which just returned 'undeliverable' and phone contact is just not going thru/dropping out. I just hoped that someone would be sitting at a computer at home just processing stuff like membership updates.....

I thought council staff, which will include libraries, had mostly been deployed - not sure to where mind you - can you visit the actual building? Maybe there's a notice on the door.

Invisimamma · 08/02/2021 12:47

Library staff in my area are furloughed (it's a community trust).

But if your child has a glow account borrow box is free with that.

theotherfossilsister · 08/02/2021 12:58

Which library? I work in this sector so might be able to help.

reprehensibleme · 08/02/2021 13:26

Gaalshiels - the libraries are structured through Live Borders.

I also work in this sector and may be able to advise. Many library services are Arms Length Organisations/ Cultural Trusts etc where the staff may have been furloughed or redeployed. If it is a Council department then you should be able to email or phone and have your membership updated which will allow you access to Borrowbox.
If you've been using Borrowbox recently I'm surprised you library membership has expired - I think in my authority it automatically renews if you're currently using.

reprehensibleme · 08/02/2021 13:29

Hmmmmm - I was using it yesterday then couldn't log on today and when I went onto my account my membership expired on 6th.

It's rubbish it expired but I think it's s glitch, the library card stops being valid if not used in a library for eighteen months, but they were working on fixing it in my library. I was really hoping you'd say Edinburgh so.i could tell you who to email.

Can you contact SLIC Scottish Libraries Resources Council? And your local council. Sorry for not being more help.

readsalotgirl63 · 08/02/2021 17:39

I would think if you contact the council they should be able to put you in contact with the appropriate person. If you can tell us which authority area you're in we @theotherfossilsister or I might be able to help more

reprehensibleme · 08/02/2021 18:54

DH wandered past library this afternoon and there was a contact number on the door so I'll call them tomorrow. If that fails I'll try the council and SLRC. Many thks for your help.

No problem - sorry Borders is one of the few places I don't think I know someone. Let us know how you get on.

reprehensibleme · 09/02/2021 11:36

No joy - it's all getting a bit circular. Message on the phone number DH found yesterday to email the address I emailed yesterday which bounced back undeliverable.

Never mind - I'm obviously going to be reduced to reading the cornflakes packet!

That's pretty poor. I would certainly suggest you email or phone Borders council and /or your local Councillor to complain.

MrsAmaretto · 09/02/2021 12:51

Twitter? Libraries are some of the best things on Twitter.

readsalotgirl63 · 09/02/2021 13:42

Or Facebook www.facebook.com/liveborders/

readsalotgirl63 · 11/02/2021 12:48

@reprehensibleme I've pm'd you

Sturmundcalm · 13/02/2021 07:49

The issue is that if it's an ALEO running your library service all staff could be furloughed (they were here but I think one person still working this time round for issues like yours). As someone else has suggested I would try Twitter or FB since they clearly have someone still at work who could hopefully try and find out who to contact.

reprehensibleme · 13/02/2021 08:30

Thanks to the power and obvious global reach of Mumsnet I'm now back up and running - it was expired membership causing the issue and a pp with 'contacts' Wink helped me get it sorted.
