Are smears still being done just now and how long do the results take?

In Glasgow specifically, I have health anxiety and want a smear done, am over 50 , but very worried about how long results are taking just now and how long I'd actually need to wait to get a smear done.

Any advice?

I’m in N.I. I had my smear on the 8th of January and got my results letter on the 27th.

I had my smear last week (in East Scotland) and they said 3-4 weeks for result.

Would you be able to come up with a coping strategy to manage the wait? I sounds really difficult for you.

With a different hospital gynae appointment booked yesterday I only waited 3 weeks for an appointment with a consultant - it must vary a lot from department to department depending upon how much they are taken up with covid stuff.

That's interesting that superdrug sell HPV testing kits. I didn't know that.

I am currently getting treatment and I am in Glasgow. They cancelled colposcopy appointments during the first lock down. As far as I know everything is normal now.

*I’m in Grampian and had one before new year, and got the results three weeks later. I did not get a letter but knew I was due one so phoned my GP and asked for one.

@Vodkafairy75 your post explains why I now have to wait 5 years instead of 3! Thanks, wish I had been told at the time!*

No problem 😊. That’s a shame that you weren’t told at the time as it makes you wonder if you have been given the correct information. I wasn’t sure if it was maybe an age thing but don’t think it is if they are checking for infection now instead.

@vodkafairy75 I asked my consultant if I had HPV and he said they did not check me for HPV. I had thought this was automatically done now. I am in Glasgow. I am going to ask about this next time I am there. I would think they would still have to check for abnormal cells to know if you need treatment. I really need to find out more about this.

I'm in North Lanarkshire. I had mine done just before Christmas. Was told it could take 6 weeks for the results but i got mine within a week.

Ah teacake yours was taken the same day as me in Scotland. No sign of letter yet.

I'm in Glasgow and mine was due last summer. I haven't had any letters in about it so I doubt they are being done. I keep meaning to call and check but it takes forever just to get through on the phone these days.

Mine was ALSO 21st January! How weird! Haven't had the letter yet.

I had mine done in December in South Lanarkshire. Results took about three weeks.

If you're specifically worried about further exams and investigation, I can offer my experience.

I was offered a pap smear (excessive bleeding), got booked for an ultrasound, then an x-ray and then a biopsy to investigate simple fibroids.

It wasn't even an urgent or suspicious case!

They then offered me an outpatient procedure a week later. It actually freaked me out how quickly it all happened until the consultant explained that their service was completely quiet and they loads of availability!

Had mine on the 18th jan, results back last week and a colposcopy booked for next week for level 1 changes

ssd I've just got my negative HPV result this morning. Smear taken 21/1 in Aberdeen. Hope you are okay.

England, had mine last week, results expected in 4-6weeks they said.

I was catching up on life admin in January. Realised my smear had been overdue since October (had no letter or anything but I think things had been covid suspended).

Anyway called up, got a next day appointment and results back in about 10 days (Grampian)

As I am late 40s letter advised me my next smear would be in 5yrs not 3yrs

I had mine taken on 20th Jan and results on 6th Feb.

I had mine in nov and results took about three weeks to come back which the nurse advised me about at the time. I can recommend citalopram for health anxiety and HRT can also make a big difference if appropriate for you. You don't have to live like this, it's grim Thanks
