Are smears still being done just now and how long do the results take?

In Glasgow specifically, I have health anxiety and want a smear done, am over 50 , but very worried about how long results are taking just now and how long I'd actually need to wait to get a smear done.

Any advice?

I’m in N.I. I had my smear on the 8th of January and got my results letter on the 27th.

WhatsYourNameMan · 29/01/2021 07:22

I had my smear last week (in East Scotland) and they said 3-4 weeks for result.

Would you be able to come up with a coping strategy to manage the wait? I sounds really difficult for you.

With a different hospital gynae appointment booked yesterday I only waited 3 weeks for an appointment with a consultant - it must vary a lot from department to department depending upon how much they are taken up with covid stuff.

That's interesting that superdrug sell HPV testing kits. I didn't know that.

I am currently getting treatment and I am in Glasgow. They cancelled colposcopy appointments during the first lock down. As far as I know everything is normal now.

@Disposableplates

*I’m in Grampian and had one before new year, and got the results three weeks later. I did not get a letter but knew I was due one so phoned my GP and asked for one.

@Vodkafairy75 your post explains why I now have to wait 5 years instead of 3! Thanks, wish I had been told at the time!*

No problem 😊. That’s a shame that you weren’t told at the time as it makes you wonder if you have been given the correct information. I wasn’t sure if it was maybe an age thing but don’t think it is if they are checking for infection now instead.

@vodkafairy75 I asked my consultant if I had HPV and he said they did not check me for HPV. I had thought this was automatically done now. I am in Glasgow. I am going to ask about this next time I am there. I would think they would still have to check for abnormal cells to know if you need treatment. I really need to find out more about this.

Just to update I had mine on the 21st of January and had my results back today x

Plump82 · 02/02/2021 20:59

I'm in North Lanarkshire. I had mine done just before Christmas. Was told it could take 6 weeks for the results but i got mine within a week.

halfhope · 02/02/2021 21:05

Ah teacake yours was taken the same day as me in Scotland. No sign of letter yet.

Shelby30 · 02/02/2021 21:14

I'm in Glasgow and mine was due last summer. I haven't had any letters in about it so I doubt they are being done. I keep meaning to call and check but it takes forever just to get through on the phone these days.

TooSensibleOfMyDefects · 02/02/2021 21:20

Mine was ALSO 21st January! How weird! Haven't had the letter yet.

MaxNormal · 02/02/2021 21:37

I had mine done in December in South Lanarkshire. Results took about three weeks.

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 02/02/2021 21:43

If you're specifically worried about further exams and investigation, I can offer my experience.

I was offered a pap smear (excessive bleeding), got booked for an ultrasound, then an x-ray and then a biopsy to investigate simple fibroids.

It wasn't even an urgent or suspicious case!

They then offered me an outpatient procedure a week later. It actually freaked me out how quickly it all happened until the consultant explained that their service was completely quiet and they loads of availability!

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 02/02/2021 21:44

Sorry, forgot to add, I'm in North Lanarkshire.

ohwhattodowithmylife · 02/02/2021 22:15

Had mine on the 18th jan, results back last week and a colposcopy booked for next week for level 1 changes

rhowton · 03/02/2021 09:28

Had mind yesterday and they said results take up to two weeks.

halfhope · 04/02/2021 12:10

ssd I've just got my negative HPV result this morning. Smear taken 21/1 in Aberdeen. Hope you are okay.

halfhope · 04/02/2021 12:11

Shelby definitely chase in case the letter was sent and lost.

LochJessMonster · 04/02/2021 12:24

England, had mine last week, results expected in 4-6weeks they said.

Theonlyoneiknow · 10/02/2021 22:42

I was catching up on life admin in January. Realised my smear had been overdue since October (had no letter or anything but I think things had been covid suspended).

Anyway called up, got a next day appointment and results back in about 10 days (Grampian)

Theonlyoneiknow · 10/02/2021 22:42

As I am late 40s letter advised me my next smear would be in 5yrs not 3yrs

StopTouchingYourFairyGarden · 11/02/2021 08:54

I had mine taken on 20th Jan and results on 6th Feb.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 11/02/2021 13:45

I had mine in nov and results took about three weeks to come back which the nurse advised me about at the time. I can recommend citalopram for health anxiety and HRT can also make a big difference if appropriate for you. You don't have to live like this, it's grim Thanks
