At a time when polls are showing unprecedented support for independence and even John Curtice agrees the polls are clear, why is Scotsnet such a bastion of unionist opinions? Is it just due to the demographic of Mumsnet? Why has this site become such a right wing enclave?

Some examples of countries who fairly recently set up their own currencies due to independence and did so successfully/ without economic instability

Estonia:
Estonia gained independence from the Soviet Union in August 1991.
By June 1992, Estonia became the first country of the former Soviet Union to replace the Russia Ruble with its own currency, the Estonian Kroon (just 10 months after gaining independence).
After the decision was made in April 1992 to introduce a Currency Board, preparations for the introduction of the Kroon moved along at full force.
The introduction of this new currency was efficient and successful. Alongside other monetary policies, the establishment of the Estonian Kroon, led to inflation in Estonia dropping below 3%, unemployment falling below 6% and foreign investment rising.
Estonia joined the European Union in 2004 and later adopted the Euro in 2011.
Croatia:
The Croatian National Bank was formed in 1990, before the country was actually independent and the new currency followed just a few years later.
In 1992, Croatia became involved in the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina and continued to be until 1995. Many industries were damaged by the war. For example, the manufacturing industry was severely affected, with about a third of its capacity being destroyed. Such damage caused for GDP in 1993 to be nearly 40% lower than the 1990 level. Meanwhile, prices were rising, and the annual rate of inflation was more than 1100%.
Croatia implemented a Stabilisation Programme. This involved actions such as the central bank tightening monetary policy and relaxing the foreign exchange market. In just one year, inflation had steadied. In May 1994, as part of this stabilisation process, a new currency, the Kuna, was introduced to replace the Dinar.
This stabilisation programme and the introduction of the new Croatian Kuna brought inflation down from the 1993 rates of 1616% to 1.0% in 1994 and 3.7% in 1995.
Since the introduction of the Croatian Kuna, it has remained stable and has effectively countered inflationary expectations
Croatia continues to use the Kuna in the present day.

@Stinkywizzleteets

I tend to stay away from scotsnet largely because of the anti Scottish sentiment /cringe from people who allegedly live here.

I’m not an SNP voter and am critical of a lot of things they do but I don’t recognise the description of Scotland or the Scottish government I read about here. The hatred of Nicola Sturgeon in particular turns my stomach, often it’s not critical of policies just pure vitriol or childish put downs aimed at her. It makes me sad to see how backward people can be. Then again Scotland still allows orange walks so can’t expect erudite responses from everyone.

100% agree with this.
WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 15:03

Thanks @StarryEyeSurprise

How will the borders work as regards FOM?

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 26/01/2021 15:03

I think MNetters are relatively highly educated, the reverse of which accords with higher support for independence

WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 15:05

I very much dislike NS as she is shout to support misogynistic policy and refuse to condemn the abuse of women such as Joanna Cherry.

Also because I do not like her refusal to countenance questioning of her by politicians (who are rubbish !) or journalists.

You wouldn't think so, reading the comments about Nicola Sturgeon on here.

I'm sure this won't go down well, but I agree.

The independence issue was ridiculous last time and still is. It is mostly people who think you aren't a real Scot unless you hate the English, and everyone should have their kilt on and a Saltire on their face a la Mel Gibson in Braveheart.

As with Brexit nobody really knows what they are voting for.

WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 15:10

Oh, and will these things be agreed upon before Scotland leaves? Not after like the brexit shitshow

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 26/01/2021 15:17

Fuck off with calling me right wing.
Like PPs, I'm centre left but have found myself rather politically homeless.
I'm inclined to vote Labour again though as Starmer is looking positive and hopefully we will also get Sarwar in Scotland. (I'm totally going to get the two surnames mixed up Grin )
This clip from Only an Excuse was brilliant. Sums it up perfectly. People too scared to say what they really think. The silent majority!

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 15:27

How will we be able to join the EU if we don't have a hard border with England?

WouldBeGood · 26/01/2021 15:29

@Graffitiqueen that’s what I’m asking about too

Applesky · 26/01/2021 15:43

Another one here who hates being called right wing and unpatriotic. Back in 2014 I was open to independence but the paper they sent to us all was such a disappointment especially the heavy reliance on oil revenue for funding us. Just too many unanswered questions, it's not good enough to say that this is what will happen as a previous poster said we don't need another Brexit shitshow

kamalasshaman · 26/01/2021 16:01

I guess we are all relatively highly educated in Scotland. We have the highest level of education per head of population in Europe.
I wish the people who say WE JUST WANT ALL THE ANSWERS BEFORE WE COMMIT would make clear how they have applied this in the rest of their lives. The level of certainty they require makes me wonder how they can even leave the house each day.

I like to be certain there won’t be an international border between me and my nearest Asda. Just as an example.

kurtrussellsbeard · 26/01/2021 16:06

I would LOVE to see the evidence that No voters were educated to a higher level than Yes voters.

I work in a school and have close professional links to a university and almost all of my colleagues, especially at the uni were Yes. Anecdotal obviously so would love to see the cold hard facts.

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 16:10

Why shouldn't we want all the answers when deciding how to vote on something that could have significant negative economic effects? the fact that we're not getting any answers makes me think that they know if they told the truth no one would vote for it.

Why won't they definitively answer the question on currency? Surely that should be an easy one? is it maybe because there's no solution that doesn't have a significant downside?

ssd · 26/01/2021 16:27

@slitheringsnakes

I find it scary that SNP / independence supporters are all about emotion. It feels worryingly similar to the support for Brexit. They really don't care about facts.
I would reply, but I've got haggis to catch and shortbread to eat, whilst wearing my kilt and polishing my bagpipes. Obviously I voted for independence.

Because I no longer posting on any of the Indy/Indy bad/SNP bad threads.

Life is too short! Grin

I will however be out campaigning when the time comes Smile

ssd · 26/01/2021 16:34

That's a shame @prettybird, I always find your posts interesting reading. Says a lot when a long standing poster like yourself doesn't post anymore.

Selkiesarereal · 26/01/2021 16:37

Given the mess of Brexit, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to know exactly what we will get as until that is sorted all that is certain is that we will be independent the rest is up in the air and whatever deal we reach with Ruk.

It doesn’t matter what anyone says/promises in this, unless it’s in writing who knows and that includes EU membership.

WeAllHaveWings · 26/01/2021 16:43

Because it is easier to be anti SNP that pro 🤔,,......what?

Elvesaremagic · 26/01/2021 16:44

One thing’s for an independent Scotland can’t join the EU without getting its debt under 3% GDP and it’s a long way from being able to do that. And every country joining the EU has to adopt the Euro. So an independent Scotland won’t be rejoining the EU anytime soon.

But you base your case for independence on these answers.

Same here. I was wondering where you'd got to PrettyBird!

PP- there are various countries in the EU with neighbours outwith and free movement. Norway, for example.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 26/01/2021 16:49

I would LOVE to see the evidence that No voters were educated to a higher level than Yes voters.

Of the people I know, it's roughly 50/50 on education level. Income and identity plays a much bigger part.

prettybird · 26/01/2021 16:57

ssd and StarryEyeSurprise - that's kind of you. Smile

Once there is an official campaign, I might gird my loins again Smile. But I've never yet been deleted and if I'd responded to some posts, I might have been at risk of that Shock. So I made a decision just to not bother engaging Wink

Instead, I just read them and laugh/vent to dh Grin
