Scotsnet does not represent Scotland

At a time when polls are showing unprecedented support for independence and even John Curtice agrees the polls are clear, why is Scotsnet such a bastion of unionist opinions? Is it just due to the demographic of Mumsnet? Why has this site become such a right wing enclave?

@StarryEyeSurprise in fairness that was only one opinion piece I’d read, so bias has probably skewed my pp.

I’ll need to read up about NATO and it’s members.
Is NATO something we want to be part of, maybe not. In my ignorance, all I know is that NATO stands for North American Treaty Organisation but nothing about its beliefs or strategy.

Smile I'm sure when she’s a captain of industry she’s love that! My dd2 is only 1st year but enjoying the work, had a wee bit in person last semester.

florafoxtrot · 28/01/2021 20:28

That must be a really tough job @StarryEyeSurprise, no wonder some days it gets to you. Cake And decisions made definitely feel like a kick in the teeth some days - whether that’s unnecessary travel from the PM or Celtic FC.

I’m doing ok, glad it’s nearly the weekend again and we can have a break from trying to work and juggle 2yo DD. Might even catch a break and it’ll stop raining Hmm

Visiting the regions?

We are not a region we are a nation.

That’s the kind of xenophobic comment that fuels nationalism.

I live in Scotland. I've lived in Scotland all my life. The first devolution referendum was the first thing I voted on. I voted no; I voted no on the second devolution referendum. I voted no on the independence referendum and I will vote no if there is another referendum.

I used to be a member of the Labour Party- voted Labour for decades. I'm now a Tory. I have as much right as you to post in this forum.

From memory, NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Trump didn't like it, or said he didn't for effect.

So it's likely a very good thing.

Jodri · 01/02/2021 07:25

Yes @GaelicButter I got it wrong the A is Atlantic not American.

I did have a wee lookie and only France, USA and U.K. members have nuclear weapons but many members have a membership (can’t remember the name of membership to NATO this was allocated) where they allow nuclear weapons to reside in their country looked after by NATO forces.

Jodri · 01/02/2021 08:14

Also I agree if trump was against it then it is probably a good thing.

Are SNP supporters happy with this sort of thing?

I'm an Independence supporter (so voted SNP to gain the chance of independence) and I am not happy about it. Or in fact pretty much anything the SNP have done to date. They have turned into New Labour and will disappear up their own arses like New Labour did
Graffitiqueen · 01/02/2021 10:18

I see Alison Thewliss is defending this by saying pretty much that as the SNP are the biggest party in Scotland they can do whatever the hell they like. The arrogance is staggering. They have not learned from Labour's downfall at all.

Sarahandduck18 · 01/02/2021 18:34

“Oh calm down”

Kind of proves the point of the OP that this is the kind of uncivil comment independence supporters get on Mumsnet.

anon444877 · 01/02/2021 18:47

If you think being told to calm down is uncivil, don't venture onto Twitter!

Graffitiqueen · 01/02/2021 19:27

and you don't think accusing no voters of being right wing is pretty uncivil? Kind of set the tone of the thread from the outset.

annabelindajane · 01/02/2021 19:31

Had to read it twice to make sure it wasn’t some sort of joke . Wow - no wonder we have so many problems for such a small country. Clearly the
Priorities re governing have been somewhat forgotten. It’s like watching a bad tv show and we are paying them for this . Next few days will be interesting 🤔

PinkyParrot · 02/02/2021 07:49

The most appalling decisions on this whole pandemic has been sending people into care homes having positive covid tests. That is criminal IMO.

That didn't happen in the Care Home my DB is in. They were v strict and wouldn't have anyone in with Covid. He was tested first.
Unfortunately I can only speak of teh one CH that I know. I'd assume others were strict too.
It's a shame broad brush strokes means they all get tarnished when it's undeserving.

PinkyParrot · 02/02/2021 07:56

I think the present polls say something like 60% for independence. 40 against. But that is talked about as if it is 99 for 1% against.

Not everyone wants independence. I don't dispute that the majority appears to but to claim it is across the board is wrong as the figures show..
It's like NS talking constantly about 'The People of Scotland' wanting to remain in the EU. Again it was quite a close run thing, so 'Half the People of Scotland' would have been nearer the truth. And, possibly, if the option had been vote to remain (but England is leaving) or to leave (with England) the vote might have been different.

Saying there is a majority vote wanting something is better than saying 'Scotland' wants -..... whatever, when all of Scotland doesn't.

slitheringsnakes · 02/02/2021 08:10

The Remain vote in Scotland was much closer to 2/3rds than to 1/2.

anon444877 · 02/02/2021 08:13

What's 5 percent between friends?

annabelindajane · 02/02/2021 08:43

Has anyone on here ever been asked their opinion on independence?
There was a letter in Times from a man in Edinburgh who’d polled young and old alike with varying political opinions and couldn’t find a single soul who had been asked . I did it in a limited way a couple of years ago and no one I knew had been asked .

PinkyParrot · 02/02/2021 08:47

I'm in a conservative constituency - funny, I've not heard of anyone being polled. We are also near the border so would be affected jobs/ schools wise with a hard border but only the central belt matters to the Scottish gov imv

WaxOnFeckOff · 02/02/2021 09:20

I think that each poll only contacts about 1000 - 2000 people so in a population of 4.5million folk it'd be a needle in a haystack. Plus, so many people now have their phones blocked to unknown numbers, it must be a struggle to get people.

Sarahandduck18 · 02/02/2021 10:13

I didn’t see any unionists questioning the validity of any polls when they were historically in the lead.

Independence is inevitable now.

For those who don’t like the SNP or ‘uncertainty’ the best way to get rid of these is to get on with a referendum.

titsbumfannythelot · 02/02/2021 10:16

The best way to get rid of uncertainty is to stfu about another referendum during a pandemic. IMHO
