Scotsnet does not represent Scotland

At a time when polls are showing unprecedented support for independence and even John Curtice agrees the polls are clear, why is Scotsnet such a bastion of unionist opinions? Is it just due to the demographic of Mumsnet? Why has this site become such a right wing enclave?

@ssd I feel sorry for the long time people on here who think the views around them reflect reality. Sometimes the posters are extremely obvious especially when they try and fail to pretend they are unable to spell or use some kind of "slang" which they have made up

@Peppafrig these are really high powered people. They know what they're doing. I just can't decide why they are doing it in plain sight. It's not a conspiracy theory, the knowledge is openly available

Okay.

LetItGoGo · 27/01/2021 14:30

Point it out and help us all.

RaspberryCoulis · 27/01/2021 14:32

Are you SERIOUSLY saying that people who hate the SNP are obviously plants, being paid to post? Because of course nobody in their right minds could possibly disagree with them?

Over inflated sense of your own importance much? Scotsnet is a small section on a parenting website where we bitch about school placement requests and share SQA horror stories. Do you not think activists have bigger fish to fry?

LetItGoGo · 27/01/2021 14:33

Scotland 2021.

kamalasshaman · 27/01/2021 14:36

The links are in the Byline Times article but this is a bit more.

The article was also in the Herald on Sunday www.heraldscotland.com/news/19034569.neil-mackays-big-read-inside-scotlands-education-wars-parents-teachers-government-daggers-drawn/
Once you start digging more it gets horrendous

Because no Scottish person could ever not like the SNP it’s so far fetched for SNP supporters to understand . It must be an infiltration. No other possible reason . Nothing to do with the terrible mess the SNP have made of our education system.

kamalasshaman · 27/01/2021 14:39

I know - it's hard to believe that some of the people attacking views that might threaten the right wing government might actually be part of that governmentConfused? Especially if you've been encouraged to join them because you secretly believe those views

LetItGoGo · 27/01/2021 14:40

Confused indeed.

I'm going for a walk now..

LetItGoGo · 27/01/2021 14:41

I may be some time..

Peppafrig · 27/01/2021 14:42

Wouldn’t trust Nicola sturgeon as far as I could throw her .

PersonaNonGarter · 27/01/2021 14:46

@Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow

I think MNetters are relatively highly educated, the reverse of which accords with higher support for independence

reprehensibleme · 27/01/2021 15:35

Oh fgs - it's come to something when anyone who questions the SNP/independence is accused of being a government plant, covid denier or a right wing conspiracist . This is a prime example of the horrendous division caused by the independence debate.

People are allowed to question the SNP stance - in fact it is imperative they do so. Sorry if that doesn't fit your narrative of SNP/independence good, opposition to SNP/independence bad.

Wbeezer · 27/01/2021 15:45

@kamalasshaman paranoid much? Scotsnet is not that busy, it may surprise you that most of us actually talk to other people in real life about these matters far more than we discuss them online, not to mention reading and listening to other voices, i dont use Twitter etc. But have had lots of chats about Independence and know lots of people's voting intentions, its a very varied picture. I know keen and reluctant supporters of both staying in the union and independence. I have not been brain washed by anyone! Scotsnet is somewhere people drop into for a chat or a wee moan or to give advice, usually when on a tea break or when the TV is dull, it's not somewhere that people spend an inordinate amount of time usually, we're not teenagers. I don't think any arch manipulators would waste their time on a sub site that gets such little traffic.
In your mind two individuals who agree on one thing must agree about others and be in cahoots/ conspirators. Should we assume you are doing it too and are projecting?

ssd · 27/01/2021 15:46

Of course people should question the SNP, why on earth wouldn't they? No government should ever be brought to account.
I'm talking more of what happens sometimes when any political thread is immediately jumped on by posters with a certain style and crushes successfully, stopping any discussion. During the last general election when Corbyn was being vilified left right and centre, there was noticable posts rubbishing him at every turn. And it was obvious the media were never going to let him win.

ssd · 27/01/2021 15:47

No government should ever NOT be brought to account

Wbeezer · 27/01/2021 15:56

The simplest explanation is usually the best one though, as doctors say "if you hear hooves think horses not zebras". Those people who end up dominating threads are probably just rude and over concerned with winning arguments, if I met one in the pub I wouldn't think they were a plant from a shadowy tory funded group, I'd just think they were an arse!

kurtrussellsbeard · 27/01/2021 15:57

@Cismyfatarse I would argue you've got that round the wrong way. A union with Europe is practical and not ideological. It doesn't matter whether you voted for the president of Hungary because he or she will have no impact on you as a citizen of an independent nation within what is essentially a trading and free movement union.

It's a completely different type of union than Scotland and England. Although you are clearly an intelligent person and are undoubtedly aware of that. Unsure why you're conflating the two when they are obviously very different. Hmm

kamalasshaman · 27/01/2021 15:59

Yes @ssd lots of people have been on this thread to say they find Scotsnet unwelcoming. I'm happy to chat and agree to disagree. But that's not how it is. Horrible things can be said about the SNP and independence support but this can never be challenged in a civilised discussion

OP posts:
reprehensibleme · 27/01/2021 16:00

You could equally say that there are pro SNP/independence plants on many of these threads - there appear to be two or three on here now! Grin

Graffitiqueen · 27/01/2021 16:07

SSD there are a few posters on here who are very very keen to shut down all criticism of the SNP. look at the false accusations of vitriol made against me for a post criticising all corrupt politicians, not just the SNP Hmm

This plant nonsense was a common thing during indyref. People could not come to terms with the fact that outside their little bubble people might have a different opinion. Hence the shock when the indyref didn't go their way.

Graffitiqueen · 27/01/2021 16:07

Oh and if anyone wants to pay me to criticise the SNP I'd be very grateful!

kurtrussellsbeard · 27/01/2021 16:07

If there are plants on one 'side' then there are on both sides. It all seems a bit far fetched for me though tbh.

makingitupaswegoon · 27/01/2021 16:11

I don't like the SNP because they are insular, generally have no solid policy base other than independence (some of the most right wing politicians I have ever come across are SNP) and have a poor record in things that matter to me e.g. educational standards have plummeted and the curriculum for excellence would be better named 'curriculum for mediocracy'
