Scotsnet does not represent Scotland

At a time when polls are showing unprecedented support for independence and even John Curtice agrees the polls are clear, why is Scotsnet such a bastion of unionist opinions? Is it just due to the demographic of Mumsnet? Why has this site become such a right wing enclave?

How funny. That's brought back memories of my younger sister. "Mummy, she swore!!!! "

kamalasshaman · 26/01/2021 20:45

@Graffitiqueen @WouldBeGood I really don't think you two are here to be persuaded. There isn't any need to swear at people on here, doesn't really happen much. People did say they avoid Scotsnet because of the vindictive behaviour.

Ok so go down the worst case scenario relating to the border supermarket issue: assume Scotland is in the EU (nowhere near a given and no time soon) and England is outside any EU/EEA/EFTA/customs zone (very uncertain)- do you not think supermarkets will see an opportunity and open new stores on the Scottish side of the ‘border’?

If there is money to be made the need will be met!

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 20:46

Kamala have you ventured onto any other areas of mumsnet? I wouldn't if I were you. They swear. A lot!! Sometimes even at each other!!😱

CayrolBaaaskin · 26/01/2021 20:46

@Graffitiqueen - no they didn’t actually. We are still going to have more or less free trade with Europe untIl we don’t want to follow their rules anymore, then there may be tariffs. I would prefer to have completely free trade but that’s not a hard border.

As I said @WouldBeGood - it may indeed be a reality that you need to use a different supermarket following independence. But there are many advantages to independence, not least being able to make decisions for ourselves about matters such as whether or not be leave the EU. But I understand you are very attached to that Asda in Carlisle.

Calyx72 · 26/01/2021 20:46

People who don't want independence are welcome to not vote yes.

It would be nice if they could let independence supporters talk about independence in Scotsnet.

BusyDreaming · 26/01/2021 20:48

kamalasshaman I sincerely hope that some of the comments you’ve made on this and the other thread are not representative of Scotland or pro Independence supporters.

I stopped posting opinions on these threads because it’s

almost as if some posters are following some kind of formula.

For the most part, the Scotsnet threads are witty, interesting and supportive.
There are many posters who have found them valuable during a very challenging time.

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 20:48

Clyxythe op started a goady thread. And now she can't take the heat and is crying about it. If you're going to accuse all no voters of being right wing then you can't expect no pushback.

kamalasshaman · 26/01/2021 20:49

@Graffitiqueen

Oh and Kamala congrats on your bigly powerful job.
Oh forgot this

You're really not cut out for mumsnet are you?

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 20:51

Honestly try posting on any other section boasting about your powerful job and see what happens.

kamalasshaman · 26/01/2021 20:54

@BusyDreaming I wonder if you've read what @Graffitiqueen has been posting? Do you think her posts are acceptable ?
I think you probably just disagree with me. My views aren't unusual or radical or offensive and they are the views of at least half of Scotland. Thankfully.
But we aren't allowed to express them on Scotsnet.

I lived through 2014 and we were told never again. It was divisive, nasty and it made me stressed and angry.

I lived in a rabidly pro-independence part of the country where teachers in my school openly recruited 16 and 17 year olds to their cause. Where a pupil took 2 weeks off as she couldn't cope with her isolation amongst her peers. Where a colleague gave out Yes badges to pupils and two nearby hills had "Yes" written on them in giant letters. Where flags flew and stickers were everywhere and my husband became more and more angry at the way "His" flag as a proud Scot had been appropriated by the SNP.

And I had to keep quiet because I am English and the community was, on the whole, angry with me personally when "No Thanks" won.

Had "Yes" won there would have been days off and marches and street parties but "No" was made to feel a bit ashamed and anti-Scottish and a bit old (because the old people caused the 'loss')

So, I came on here and found anonymous support and cold hard facts from StatisticallyChallenged, and others.

So, yes. Mumsnet brings people like me out to share our views. Because in real life we have to shut up because we "hate Scotland / are misogynists who hate NS / don't understand / are right wing / hate immigrants" Or eat babies.

Who knows.

But I don't want 2014 again. It was 7 years ago. Barely a blink of an eye.

And we bloody well won. For a generation. So it shouldn't happen again because it was just once.

The SNP don't get to keep asking until they get what they want. That is NOT democracy. It is being a sore loser.

kamalasshaman · 26/01/2021 20:56

Can't have it both ways @Graffitiqueen pps were desperate to say how uneducated and low earning independence support was. But we are not. No one is boasting. But hey nothing like knocking other women down, taking them down a peg or two etc

OP posts:
CayrolBaaaskin · 26/01/2021 20:57

@kamalasshaman - don’t worry about it. You are right though, it’s hard to have a decent conversation about independence without some people descending into name calling.

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 20:57

Kamala what exactly are you trying to achieve here? Look at how goady your original post was. Let me remind you of your false accusation of me being vitriolic. Everyone can see that down thread. You have no moral high ground here.

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 20:59
@kamalasshaman - don’t worry about it. You are right though, it’s hard to have a decent conversation about independence without some people descending into name calling.
How can we start a decent conversation with that OP?

kamalasshaman · 26/01/2021 21:01

Oh @Graffitiqueen if you think this thread is goady please do head to AIBU.
You've called me all kinds of names on here tonight and you still don't see that the way you've referred to pps today could easily be seen as vitriolic. I didn't say that you were - just that people are fed up with vitriol.
Any independence supporters must be perfect, but others can do as they please.

Do you know what I do apologise for taking the piss out of your powerful job. That was a bit below the belt.

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 21:01

WHAT NAMES HAVE I CALLeD YOU?!?!!

Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 21:02

Right now I am absolutely furious. Show me where I have called you names please?

CayrolBaaaskin · 26/01/2021 21:02

@Cismyfatarse we have an election every 5 years. You don’t just get to vote once and that’s it. We have been dragged out of the EU against our will, things have changed and time for a new referendum.

kamalasshaman · 26/01/2021 21:03

@Graffitiqueen Did you forget you're not on Parler ToNight?

OP posts:
Graffitiqueen · 26/01/2021 21:05

So you can't point to where I've called you names because I haven't.

Cismyfatarse · 26/01/2021 21:05

@CayrolBaaaskin But elections are for 5 years and have an end to them. You are saying we should break up with the UK which is irrevocable. And for what? Sunshine, unicorns and the sunlit, oil filled uplands of the imagination.

How on earth can you oppose Brexit on the ground it breaks up one Union and then want to break up another.

Fewer borders. More unity. Less division.
