Just that really

What do you think might be a realistic re-opening date.
Am I being optimistic thinking after the February break
I know no one has a crystal ball just looking for people's thoughts

Wasn't the P1-3 maximum class size going to be 18 when the SNP came to power?
Ays, right. We're now up to 30.

DollyMixtureLulus · 16/01/2021 15:42

The new build schools are so cramped. Low ceilings and they always seemed stuffy to me. My LA refurbed a lot of the traditional red sandstone schools but I’ve always found them to be much smaller and less practical.

The best building I worked in was a 60s montrosity but the inside layout was brilliant.

DollyMixtureLulus · 16/01/2021 15:44

Was it not all classes capped at 18?

In nine years I’ve never had below 22, but mostly had 27-33.

Dogscatsandsparrows · 16/01/2021 16:15

Most of our classes are 33. Our hall is multi purpose - gym, assembly and lunch every day so is useless as a teaching space. If every library, TV room, hall and even ICT/music rooms are repurposed as is proposed in some cluster schools, that means pupils are in class at all times including lunch. My school is open plan so doing music etc in your area isn't an option. It's back to more child care eg having all pupils in school rather than actually providing a quality education.

Many of us are teaching in schools and managing online learning at the same time just now...

FrippEnos · 16/01/2021 19:02

If you want schools to go back in a sustainable way then you have to protect the teachers.

this "teachers are no more important than" bullshit is so shortsighted.

Where are you?

I think the teachers in DSs school are rota'd to be teaching in school one day per week.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 16/01/2021 19:25

@midnightstar66

They absolutely DO from the teacher.

Children under 12 are not required to distance whatsoever neither from adults or other dc. I have dc still sitting on my knee in class. My p7 dd is not required to distance from her teacher.

That was also OLD advice when it was the old variant. We have absolutely no idea of transmission with children.

But we do not have any updated advice. Guidelines re distancing of primary children has not changed

This is NOT Scottish Gov guidance. The do here in Scotland. You are wrong.
Invisimamma · 16/01/2021 19:57

Children in Scotland under 12 don't need to social distance from anyone.

I do however encourage my children to keep their distance from adults outwith our direct family.

They do in school from the teacher.
Fortherosesjoni70 · 16/01/2021 20:36

I can categorically state that they do as a teacher. Its absolute rubbish. There is not one school I dont know of where it is advised to keep 2 meters from children and if not they are told to wear a mask. They have tape to avoid the children coming close. The local Authority had a plan of action saying children were to 'step back' from the teacher.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 16/01/2021 20:37

sorry where it is advised that you haven't to keep your distance.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 16/01/2021 20:37

Whatever you are looking at does not apply to schools.

ItsIgginningtolooklikelockdown · 16/01/2021 20:38

Whether they are expected to distance or not, they don't do they? My child walks out in a line next to his teacher.
My (older) pupils sit 2m from me but they are cheek to jowl in corridors and coming in and out of the room.

ItsIgginningtolooklikelockdown · 16/01/2021 20:39

My school. My dc's schools.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 16/01/2021 20:44

Well they should be distancing. The area is taped off to give the teacher 2 metres in her bubble. If she is required to go nearer she is advised to wear a mask. The only classes that don't have to are P1 and P2. The rest do. Maybe the class teacher is choosing not too.

Well they can't because in reality children come up to teachers faces to ask questions. So no but they are supposed to.

Absolutely.
Fortherosesjoni70 · 16/01/2021 20:48

When the children came back to school, they were to be seated in rows and facing the front. They were to sit side by side. Their desks were expected to be 2 meters from the teacher.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 16/01/2021 20:48

That was any class from P5 up.

ItsIgginningtolooklikelockdown · 16/01/2021 20:49

Children walk through my taped area all the time. They have to if they are not to teleport to the next class. They do it to ask me questions or to get a pencil. It's just tape, not an electric fence!
If I need to go closer to help them I put on a mask. But they don't have to (so they don't) other than S4+ in tier 3+

mondaywine · 16/01/2021 22:14

I’m east coast. No rota. It’s fine. I’m okay with it. But I won’t be able to keep it up long term.

Lockdownbear · 16/01/2021 23:21

Mondaywine I wondered if you were maybe down south where they seem to have very large numbers in school.

I hope you don't need to keep that up for a full term. Must be really hard going. I'm not a teacher but common sense tells me that doing online and in class at the same time must be fairly impossible.

Groovee · 17/01/2021 07:23

Early years don't need to distance but we do need to wear masks if we have to be in the close proximity of adults ie lunch times.

Most of the time we can distance as we're outside.

RaraRachael · 17/01/2021 08:45

Our HT told us that if we were in school for the KW children, we were not to provide online learning for our own classes on those days.
