This is a new thing .. has anyone noticed?
Today she is wearing maroon and so is the interpreter

On Thursday it was a pink one

I would assume it’s a coincidence. If two men happened to be wearing navy we wouldn’t even notice.

ikswobel · 19/12/2020 17:55

No absolutely but I think they are having fun with it. Maybe men could coordinate ties Smile

Two men in suits with blue ties

Shock

ikswobel · 19/12/2020 17:56

Loving the bsl interpreters dress wondering if it's leather?

I doubt they’re intentionally co-ordinating outfits to deliver such bad news.

foxyknoxy30 · 19/12/2020 18:25

It was her shoes I noticed 😁

Namechange2020lalala · 19/12/2020 19:56

I've noticed it to, looks professional and maybe so it doesn't distract/clash.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 19/12/2020 20:30

I think it's deliberate so as to make it easier for people to watch: I think sign language interpreters are supposed to wear plain outfits. Those at my university try to wear plain black.

NotAnActualSheep · 19/12/2020 20:33

Have to say, I thought today's interpreter was amazing! She had such an expressive face, and did excellent sad faces, expressions of horror and so on at appropriate points. I've never really paid attention before, but she was wonderful to watch (pity about the news she was interpreting, but hey). It also looked as if she may have done a rude gesture at some point when mentioning online learning, but I could have been imagining/ hoping for that.

Namechange2020lalala · 19/12/2020 20:48

She was great wasn't she, I noticed the really informative gestures too.

midnightstar66 · 19/12/2020 20:51

I've only noticed that the janey godley version looks like the sign is actually saying what she does. I'd love to know of that were the case!

MaHeidsGouping · 19/12/2020 22:32

I wondered this too, one day this week both were wearing black and red then tonight it was maroon.

HappyHomeWorker · 19/12/2020 22:34

@NotAnActualSheep I’m interested in what you’re saying because I really noticed how expressive her face was. I’ve never paid much attention to the interpreters before on the conferences or anything really but I take it they’re supposed to do this?

NotAnActualSheep · 19/12/2020 22:42

I don't know happy! Like you, I've not really noticed before, which suggests most don't to such an extent. I thought most interpreters sort-of mouth the words at the same time, to aid lip readers, but the expressions would kind of do the same thing. I'm ashamed to say I know almost nothing about BSL, so I don't know how it's supposed to be done.

winterbabythistime · 20/12/2020 07:51

I've noticed they're in the same colour quite often actually

EnPoinsettia · 20/12/2020 08:13

She was brilliant. I think maybe the company-ordinating dresses is to make it easier for those watching the interpreter @DontWalkPastTheCastle. A clash of colours might be distracting visually.
ikswobel · 20/12/2020 10:46

It's so skilled as it's an entirely different language, they don't just translate words in the same order.

MaHeidsGouping · 20/12/2020 11:55

This for example can't be a coincidence.

The coordination would definitely have been coincidence.

The interpreter was unlikely to receive any preparation in advance, for example what was likely to be covered, let alone know what anyone else was going to be wearing.

The rule tends to be plain, dark colours to provide a good contrast to the hands in front.

tinseltitsbumfannythelot · 20/12/2020 16:48

They're in a wardrobe bubble together.

PapsofJura · 20/12/2020 22:54

I’ve noticed it for a wee while and did wonder about it but as suggested above that it’s to be less distracting that does make sense.

I don’t think anything Nicola sturgeon or the SNP do is coincidental though. Presentation and appearance is paramount. It gives the impression of one united, clear voice, and they do love that and there is strength in a united front. But i would argue coordinated outfits is distracting from actual content.

I remember Nicola sturgeon before she was deputy in the party, didn’t appear to wear make up or do her eyebrows and would not be described as a sharp dresser (no judgment as I never wear make up and clothes are practical for me)...and then it was like she had had a make over.

They have put work into the male members of the party and how they appear too though through the years.
I remember before the MP Stewart hosie was elected when he was standing for council elections; when interviewed on local news he had this nervous thing of blinking repeatedly when talking. The image consultant and PR people must have swooped down and next time when he was standing for MP it was gone.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 21/12/2020 09:01

That's just bollocks.

Do you imagine a deaf person trying to follow the briefing is unable to because their mind is blown by matching colours? Confused

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 21/12/2020 09:03

Also, all parties have an image machine behind them. It's not peculiar to parties you dislike. Boris Johnson is currently paying his personal photographer more than 100k, for example.
